War Between the States

(1805-74) Born in Jamaica, Vermont. When the Civil War commenced he was serving as colonel of the 2nd Massachusetts Militia. On May 25, 1861, he was commissioned colonel of the 1st Massachusetts Infantry, and he commanded them in the 1st battle of Bull Run, where he had a horse shot out from under him. During the 1862 Virginia Peninsula campaign he saw action at Williamsburg, Seven Pines, Glendale, and Malvern Hill. For bravery at Williamsburg, General Joseph Hooker recommended him for promotion to brigadier general. He later commanded a brigade in the defenses of Washington.
