War Between the States

(1809-99) Born in St. Lawrence County, N.Y., he was the uncle of Union Civil War General Henry E. Davies. He graduated in the West Point class of 1829 and among his graduating class were three future Confederate Generals; Robert E. Lee, Joseph E. Johnston and Theophilus H. Holmes. Davies resigned from the U.S. Army in 1831 to pursue an engineering career. He worked on the Croton Aqueduct which supplied water to New York City. He later was a merchant in N.Y.C., and when the war broke out he was commissioned colonel of the 16th New York Infantry, which he led in the 1st battle of Bull Run. Promoted to brigadier general, March 7, 1862, he saw action in the siege and battle of Corinth, Miss. He commanded the Districts of Columbus, Kentucky, 1862-63; Rolla, Missouri, 1863-64; and North Kansas, 1864-65. He was brevetted major general in 1865.
