Our history begins in Toronto, November 15, 1884 with the formation of the Jewellers Security Alliance of Canada, the forerunner Canadian Jewellers Association. Its purpose was to help jewellers strengthen their security measure generally discourage jewellery store thefts. The first meeting of the CJA was June 4, 1918 and in 1921 became incorporated establishing its Code of Ethics for its membership. At this time in history, taxes were the rallying point for its first meeting where the federal government, searching for more revenues to support the war, had imposed an excise tax of 5% on all jewellery products. After a long fight by the CJA that took over eighty years to win, the federal government removed the 10% jewellery excise tax on May 2, 2006.
