Railroad Mechanical Pencil American Refrigerator Transit Co Train Car
Neat vintage find out of a home. This is a vintage mechanical pencil made by Quick Point in St. Louis, Missouri. It was made for the American Refrigerator Transit Company, also based in St. Louis, MO.
From some internet research, the American Refrigerator Transit Company made refrigerated train cars for transporting refrigerated goods on railroads. They began making refrigerator train cars in 1881 for the Missouri Pacific Railroad and the Wabash Railroad. The company is now a subsidiary of Union Pacific Corporation.
This vintage pencil measures about 5 1/2 inches in length and has rounded sides with a width of about 5/16 inch. The base color for this piece is a marbled pale yellow or pale amber type with a red band and red end cap and silver color for the pencil point and pocket hanger. The American Refrigerator Transit Company name is printed on the pencil body in black below a colored graphic of one of the refrigerator cars (and the company name appears also on this train car graphic). On the metal pocket hanger is imprinted "Quickpoint, St. Louis". While we don't know the exact age of this piece (we are not experts here), our guess is that it could date from the 1930's to 1960's.
As shown in several images, the end cap is removable with what appears to be the original pencil eraser still attached (the eraser feels hard to us so we don't know that it would work anymore as an eraser, but it is there). We can't tell if this is a working pencil or not. We don't see any lead in the point, nor see any when we twist the cap piece, and we don't have lead to try inserting here. Net, we just don't know if you could use this as a pencil today as found, so we are selling this as is/as found and can make no guarantees as to whether this piece works. We also have not attempted to clean this piece.
We've provided 8 images to try and show all sides, with and without the end cap, and close-ups. Please note that the camera lighting creates white "hot spot" reflections on the smooth pencil body. Please use the zoom feature to examine closely.
Very nice overall vintage used condition with expected wear but nothing bad. We see no chips, cracks, breaks or major scratches on this piece. The train car graphic (with dots of wear), company name and the marbled body design look good. There is expected age/wear with some darkening/general wear on the marble and red end cap, the hard condition of the eraser as stated earlier, much darkening/tarnishing/wear dots on the metal holding the eraser that gets hidden beneath the end cap, general wear/small scratches on the metal pocket hanger piece, wear/dots/some small scratches on the metal point piece, some spots/dots/dirt on the yellow marbled areas with some tiny indented lines (particularly on the end cap and near the pocket hanger), and likely other light general wear. While not mint or new looking, this piece has a great look with wear that supports its age.
A nifty addition for a railroadiana collection or one related to mechanical pencils in general or items/companies related to St. Louis, Missouri.

1898 Naval Navy Ship Antique Print, Steamship St. Louis, St. Paul
Original book page with what we believe to be photos, from "The Battle with Spain", published by New York Monthly Company, New York in 1898. Not a reproduction, but old page from an antique issue of this book (we guarantee this), with an antique print on each side of the page -- on one side it's the Steamship St. Louis, with the other the Steamship St. Paul. In the paragraph under each picture it explains that these two steamships 'have been' chartered by the U.S. government, and at the time the book was printed, were being refitted to be used in the U.S. Navy as an armed cruiser and flying cruiser, respectively.
The vintage book showed pictures of naval vessels, navy ships, battleships, cruisers, gunboats, etc., which were part of the U.S. Navy at the time of the war with Spain (or the Spanish American war, the one with "Remember the Maine!"). No cpoyright dates appear on the book pages. As said prior, there is also a paragraph describing each ship under it's picture, giving size details, history, etc. In the St. Paul description it states that when ready for active service, "her captain will be Charles D. Sigsbee, the intrepid commander of the unfortunate "Maine," whose courage may be counted on to seek revengeful redress for the loss of his ship and gallant crew."
Very nice overall condition black & white photographs, on full page measuring about 13 inches wide x 11 inches high. There are large creases which can be faintly seen going through the pictures on these pages, a large vertical 2 lined soft crease (as if the page was accidentally bent in the book), and some curved horizontal creases which are hard edged (from the look of these, it's possible these were in the paper when manufactured, but we don't know). When matted and framed we don't think these will be visible, but as a loose piece of ephemera you can see these when held in the light. There are very minor page or corner edge wear and other expected handling wear for a book page (the little within-the-page handling bumps or small creases that you see from a page being handled or turned within a book, also judged to be not noticeable framed). There is also the expected uneven edge and corner where the page was taken from the book.
The book covers were in very bad shape, so we removed the good pages and are selling them separately. A terrific piece to add to a collection related to the Spanish American War, the 1898 War, or a collection relating in general to the U.S. Navy or US Navy Vessels, Ships, Battleships, Warships, etc.

1893 Antique Maps, Varied U.S. States & Countries, Europe, Middle East
19 original 1893 antique maps, two-sided (a different antique map on each side of the page), from 'The C. A. Gaskell Family and Business Atlas of the World', published by U.S. Publishing House, Chicago, ILL. Date does not appear on page, but we guarantee they are from this edition of this book. Most size about 11 x 14 inches. Maps are colored in pale blue, yellow, pink and green. Overall condition for age very good, spotting & minor flaws vary by piece, some have irregular edges where separated from book in margin area (could be fully covered when matting for framing).

Original 1900 antique maps (antique map), two-sided (different maps on each side of the page), from 'Peerless Atlas of the World', Farm & Fireside Library, No. 181, March 1900, published by The Crowell & Kirkpatrick Co., Springfield, Ohio. Size 11 x 13 1/2 in. Overall condition for age very good, but pages browned and very brittle and delicate due to age, with edge chipping/pieces missing in border area (amount varying from very little to more by map) which could be covered when matting for framing.
