2119

Vtg Mid-Century Large Stangl Pottery Cornucopia Horn of Plenty #5066 Lovely large piece of vintage Stangl Pottery which came out of a home. This is the larger size of their Cornucopia or Horn of Plenty, measuring about 10 inches in length x about 7 inches in height with a diameter across the largest part of the opening of about 7.5 inches. As this is made from pottery or ceramic and given the size, this piece weighs about 35 ounces or 2.2 pounds unpacked.

Marked on underside base with the expected Stangl manufacturer marking. While the gold stamping here is blurry and thick, making this hard to read, it states "Hand Painted" above the oval, "Stangl, Trenton, NJ" within the oval, then beneath the oval "Since 1805 (we believe this is the date), Antique Gold" and then the item number "5066" (this number is particularly blurry but from some research we believe that is the number meant here). From some internet research, the company name was changed to Stangl Pottery in 1955 (pieces had previously been made under Fulper Pottery) and it ceased operations in 1978, so this piece was made during that period and is a mid-century modern piece.

Formed with curved lines or ridges throughout, having a curled up end or tail and a wide open mouth area, so that this could be displayed with real or decorative fruit, vegetables or flowers within the piece as part of an eye-catching table or display setting. The piece has an all-over light turquoise blue coloring onto which is applied the rich gold coloring in a mottled fashion. Deep in the interior of the cornucopia opening the pottery has a white or ivory color, but one only sees the gold & turquoise on display. We have read that these pieces were painted with 22K gold but that is not stamped on the pottery so we don't know for certain what gold paint was used here.

We've provided 8 images to show from varied angles including the manufacturer marking. Please note that the camera lighting causes white and highlighted spots on the smooth surfaces. Please use the zoom feature to examine closely.

Wonderful condition overall, with some expected evidence of age when examined closely, but nothing bad (no chips, cracks or major flaws). As made, there are pin and pit dots in the pottery and two spots of extra pottery where the opening of the horn sits on the table. These are not coated in the gold that is elsewhere along the rim and can be felt to be rough spots rather than smooth, either made this way to keep the piece from sliding on a table or perhaps the gold that may have once covered these was worn here over time, we don't know, but these are not seen when the piece rests on a table. Minor evidence of wear/age/cleaning wear can be seen via a line scratch at a slant across the gold rim in one spot, other gold wear on the opening rim (but we would guess 85-90%+ of the gold is still covering this rim opening), gold line/rubbed wear to the curved tail or tip area (but no chips), other minor wear on the body, etc. Nothing unexpected for an older piece or would be seen on display.

Terrific center piece for celebrating gathering around tables together with our families and friends.

2027

Vintage 1950s/1960s Souvenir Drinking Glass, Ocean City, New Jersey Neat vintage souvenir glass or souvenir collectible believed to have been made in the 1950s or 1960s. This is a frosted drinking glass or frosted tumbler for Ocean City, New Jersey (these are the only words shown on the glass). There is no manufacturer mark or other indication on the glass as to who made it. These were very popular collectibles in the mid 20th century as people traveled the country by road visiting multiple locations.

Cylindrical drinking tumbler measuring 4 7/8 inches in height, 2 5/8 inch top opening diameter. It is evenly frosted throughout the glass (vs. some of these glasses which are frosted behind the designs but become clear in other places). We've provided 3 images to try to show the intricate design. The glass decor wraps a beach scene around the piece, with people sitting on and walking the beach, with what looks like a man fly fishing in the background and a sailboat sailing on the ocean in the far distance. Ocean City, NJ is a well known summer beach area, a very popular summer vacation destination. All graphic details are done in a raised red enameling or baked-on paint.

This souvenir tumbler is in overall very nice condition, ready to use or display, with some age wear. There is a touch of red enameling missing on the "ey" in the word "Jersey", some unevenness in one line in the "N" in "Ocean" (this could be how this was made), and a number of dots of red enamel wear on the beach scene graphic, but this is not bad overall for a vintage piece (the original red enamel is 95%+ still present on this glass). When you look at the frosting on the glass in very bright light you can see there are some large spots of frosted wear on the upper part of the glass near the upper rim, mainly on the back side, with some frosting missing spots behind the words "Ocean City" and a few small areas elsewhere on the glass. This could be how this piece was made or wear due to some hard washing over the years, we don't know (we don't see scratches). Not something we think you would notice on display, but you will see this if you examine closely. There is expected evidence of age/wear on the underside base on which the glass sits.

An attractive souvenir drinking glass to add to a beach oriented collection or just a nifty piece to add to any collection of memorabilia related to Ocean City or New Jersey in particular.

If you are looking at ordering more than one of the state souvenir glasses, we recommend you contact us before placing the order so that we can provide you with a better shipping cost. We would be pleased to ship multiple glasses together in one package to save you money (the system won't automatically calculate the savings you should get shipping more than one glass together).

Click for more detail...

2042

Atlantic City NJ Boardwalk Souvenir China Flogel Bros W Initial Dish Fun find out of a home. This is a vintage souvenir from the boardwalk in Atlantic City, New Jersey. A china or porcelain piece (it is translucent) with a topside curved handle for ease in carrying. We've seen these referred to as a Nappy Dish, Candy Dish or Lemon Dish, but it could be used for serving any small item.

A small round dish measuring about 6 3/16 inches in diameter and sitting about 1 1/2 inches in height to the top tip of the elegantly curved handle. White porcelain with a simple gold edge design and gold paint on the handle, with a center gold capital "W" ("W" initial) done in old English (Olde English) lettering. While we are pretty certain this was meant to be a capital "W", if you turned this dish around you might get away with calling this a capital "M" (if you are looking for a "M" initial because your name begins with "M"), but internet research suggests that old English "Ms" are done a bit differently and that this was most likely meant to be a "W". This vintage souvenir china piece weighs 6 1/2 ounces unpacked.

There are two sets of markings on the backside. The base white china piece was made in Japan, with a blue stamp saying this. While only the Japan can be read clearly, you can see the hint of a blue line that was meant to show above this, which we think would have said "Made in", but we think the stamp was applied in an incomplete fashion. Above this mark in red is the stamp done in an oval for the company which did the gold decoration. This states "Flogel Bros. Decorating Co. Atlantic - City, N.J." (Flogel Brothers Decorating Company) with the word "Boardwalk" in the center (the "c" in "Decorating" is not fully there, but you can tell this is what is meant). This indicates that this piece is a souvenir china piece from the Atlantic City Boardwalk. From the style and Japan marking we would guess this dates to the 1950s or 1960s, so this is a Mid Century Modern piece.

We've provided 8 images to show from differing angles. Please note that the camera lighting causes white "hot spot" reflections on the glossy surfaces and in some cases made it difficult to see the detail due to these reflections. So we've also included several images shot without the camera light (these appear darker than the piece does in person, but can show some of the detail better). Please use the zoom feature to examine closely.

Excellent overall condition with no chips, cracks or crazing and just a bit of expected age/use wear. There are some scratches on the topside surface which you can see when holding the piece at an angle in bright light but nothing bad. There is a touch of wear to the gold paint on the handle with some very slight surface wear/rubbing on the "W" and the top trim, but again all this is not bad. A bit of expected wear to the underside rim on which this sits (a few very, very tiny indents/low chips and some pin/pit dots on this rim, nothing bad at all).

A neat gift for anyone whose name begins with "W", particularly if they are interested in or collect souvenirs related to Atlantic City, NJ or the Atlantic City Boardwalk.

Click for more detail...

2085

1954 Medal Decathlon Atlantic City NJ Centennial Sports Track Field Neat vintage find out of a home. This is an award or medal that was given for competing in a Track & Field sports event that must have been part of the Atlantic City, NJ centennial celebration in 1954. The front side states "City of Atlantic City Centennial" with the years 1854 and 1954 on either side of the city seal, under which it says "Award, 100 Years of Carefree Seashore Living". This is all done in raised molded letters with a small linear graphic of city buildings and spotlight type light rays shown above the buildings. On the backside is impressed stamped "Senior Decathlon 1954".

Rounded type shape that is flattened on the bottom edge with curves or scrolls on the outer round edging. Has a molded ring on the center top edge so this might have hung on a ribbon at one time but the ribbon is gone. Measures greatest height 1 1/2 inches from top tip of ring to opposite straight edge, greatest width about 1 1/4 inches and greatest depth of 1/8 inch for the ring (depth of medal itself is about 3/32 inch).

This is made of metal but we are not sure which type. A magnet does not stick to this. It looks to have had a surface coloring which has worn in spots. The coloring is more of a worn bronze or darkened gold or worn copper rather than a bright, penny copper color (perhaps this was an award for a 3rd place finish, we're not sure and that is not indicated). Weighs a bit over .5 ounce or 16 grams.

We've provided 8 images including one with a quarter for size comparison. Please note that the camera lighting causes white "hot spots" on the smooth metal. In order to show all details, we have shot images both with and without the camera light, and at varied angles. Please use the zoom feature to examine closely.

Very nice vintage aged condition with no chips, cracks, hairlines, crazing or major flaws, but does show age wear. You can see the surface color wear most prominently on the backside from years of sitting, with worn spots, dark spots, scratches, rubbed areas, etc. This isn't as obvious on the top side but the top does have an expected overall slightly worn look with darkening, some spotting, scratches & discoloration, etc. But we find none of this objectionable and just supports believability of age. We have not attempted to clean or shine this old medal and are selling as is/as found.

A different medal from the Atlantic City centennial medals we usually see, which would make a fun addition to any collection related to Atlantic City, NJ or souvenirs related to that area in general. Would also make a nice addition for a sports collector, particular a collection related to Track & Field events in general or decathlons in specific.

Click here to enlarge image and see more about item 1927: 1958 Stangl Pottery Floral Tiger Lily 8 Inch Dessert Plate #3965

Click for more detail...

1927

1958 Stangl Pottery Floral Tiger Lily 8 Inch Dessert Plate #3965 Neat find out of a home. This is a round 8 inch diameter dessert or luncheon plate made by Stangl Pottery in their Tiger Lily pattern. It is fully marked on the backside with the brown oval "Stangl Pottery, Trenton, N.J." mark with the pattern name "Tiger Lily" below and the Roman numerals "VIII" above this. The plate has a lower rim on which it sits and bows or curves upwards from this base, so that it sits on a table at about 7/8 inch in height.

According to some internet research and the book, Collector's Encyclopedia of Stangl Pottery, by Robert C. Runge, Jr., Stangl Pottery manufactured pieces from 1929 to 1978. During the 1950s (and up until 1960) the company used either slashes or Roman numerals on their pieces to indicate the year of manufacture. The Roman numeral VIII or 8 on this plate indicates that this piece was made in 1958. The Tiger Lily pattern was hand-carved hand painted dinnerware pattern #3965 for Stangl (this pattern number does not appear on the plate itself). The designer of this pattern was Kay Hackett, who based it on a wildflower from New Jersey, the Turk's Cap lily. The pattern was only manufactured from 1957 until 1962.

We've provided 8 images including close-ups of the design and manufacturer marking. Please note that the camera lighting causes white "hot spot" reflections on the glossy surfaces and makes the white base color seem ultra white. Please use the zoom feature to examine closely. This is a sturdy piece of pottery, weighing over 13 ounces unpacked. We originally had two similar plates in this pattern and shot images of just one of them, the other plate has sold.

While this plate has a great overall look with no major chips, cracks, etc., it is not mint and does show some age, use and/or storage wear, as expected. If you hold the plate at an angle in very bright light you will see many topside scratch dots and scratch lines of varying sizes (none overly long), in both the painted and white areas. You likely won't see these with the plate on display nor sitting on a table in normal light, but you need to know these are there. There is also some paint wear to some of the brown painted lines (with portions of some lines missing) and a few pin/pit dots in the pottery, with likely other general usual wear.

Would make a nice addition to display with any collection of Stangl Pottery or could be used as part of a dinnerware set of Tiger Lily or a mixed set of multiple Stangl pattern pieces.

Click for more detail...

1979

Vintage Lecroy's Chilli Powder Tin 1 1/2 Oz. John LeCroy Camden, NJ Vintage food advertising spice or extract tin for chilli powder. This is a Lecroy's Chilli Powder tin, 1 1/2 ounce size, distributed/manufactured by John Lecroy & Son, Camden, New Jersey (NJ, N.J.). Two sides of this rectangular tin state the product name, size and company information identically. On one thin edge side it states, "Established 1881, Lecroy's Selected Spices". On the opposite thin edge side it states, "Purity, Strength, Flavor" in large letters with "new Style Package Adopted 1936" underneath. Based on this we know this tin is no older than 1936, but don't know exactly how old it is. It came out of an older home.

The old metal tin measures 3 inches tall x 2 1/4 inches wide x about 1 1/4 inch depth. The tin is empty, there is no product inside. The rectangular lid is fully removable. The base color of the tin is a mustard yellow, with a red horizontal band at the bottom above which is a thin black line. The words are shown with red for Lecroy's and black for all other copy. There is a circular "JL" logo in black under the Lecroy's name on the two main face sides. Both the tin body and the lid stick freely to a magnet.

We've provided 8 images to show from differing angles, including interior and bottom. Please use the zoom feature to examine closely. Some images show white "hot spot" reflections from the camera lighting on the smooth metal surfaces.

This tin is in good, expected, used vintage condition. It is not new or mint looking, having expected normal use/age/wear. There are no major dents, cracks or breaks that we see. There is corrosion right above the bottom edge on all sides on the lower red band, with this more prominent on one face side. The main body sides look very good, with wear/wear dots/use wear, scratches, etc. but really not looking bad. When you remove the lid, there is significant wear along the outer top of the main tin on all sides, with corrosion, scrapes, etc. The lid outer top shows a bit more wear than the body of the tin, but nothing unexpected and the yellow coloring is still very good, with the inner lid showing corrosion/rust/etc. The inside tin body is all corroded/rusty. The underside base has three main small rust circular areas and other dot wear along with general wear but again, not bad for a used item.

A nifty piece to add to any collection of old advertising tins, vintage food tins, spice tins or extract tins, etc. Would also make a nice decor piece for a kitchen shelf or an interesting gift for a lover of hot sauces and chilli powders (chile powders, chili powders).

2018

Vintage Metal Tray Marlborough-Blenheim Hotel Atlantic City, NJ Japan Nifty vintage collectible souvenir piece out of a home. This is a small metal tray for a demolished, long gone resort hotel formerly in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The tray has a raised design in the metal depicting the Marlborough-Blenheim Hotel, with the name and Atlantic City, N.J. appearing above the buildings on the front side. On the backside in raised letters is marked "Made in Japan".

From some internet research, this historic hotel resort was built between 1902 and 1906, and it was demolished in 1978-1979. Given the Japan marking, we believe this is a mid-century souvenir, likely from the 1950's/1960's. The hotel address was formerly 1900 Pacific Avenue in Atlantic City, between Ohio Avenue and Park Place on the Boardwalk.

A magnet does not stick to this old piece, so the metal used here could be aluminum or something else (it does not appear to be tin, silver plate or sterling). Measures 6 inches long x 2 1/2 inches height. The metal curves upward at all edges so this sits about 1/2 inch in height. The tray weighs almost 3 ounces unpacked.

The design shows the large, ornate, double connected building with a fence in the foreground. There is an intricate design along the topside outer edges that looks to us to be perhaps 2 reptiles curled/extended as the border, overlapping and having claws, so we are not sure exactly what type of reptile these are meant to be (snakes, low dragon types, etc.). Definitely an oriental or Asian-type border design.

We've provided 8 images to show various features. Please note that the camera light creates white "hot spot" reflections on the metal. Please use the zoom feature to examine closely.

Very nice vintage condition but not mint looking. There are no chips, cracks, crazing, dents, pieces missing. As you can see in the images, the metal does not look shiny and new, as to be expected given the age. There is tarnishing, darkened line areas, discoloration areas, spotting, general wear from age on topside and bottom, but this all adds to the believability of age and the great older look. We have not attempted to clean or shine this up, perhaps some of this could be removed or lessened, but are selling as is/as found.

A fun addition to any collection related to Atlantic City, New Jersey souvenirs or one related to hotels or major buildings that are no longer standing.

2034

Vtg Never Used Milk Bottle Cap Insert Gramana Dairy Phillipsburg, NJ Neat find out of a home. This is a never used, never opened vintage milk bottle cap or insert for an old glass milk bottle. This was made for and marked for Gramana Dairy Co. of Phillipsburg, N.J. (New Jersey, NJ), for use with their Pasteurized Milk. The cap also states "Produced at Gramana Farm Thursday".

Round, with a diameter of about 1 5/8 inches, made of paperboard with a single staple in the cap and a thickness of about 1/16th inch. We are saying this was never used because the flap one would pull up on in the center of the cap in order to lift the cap insert out of the top of the bottle has never been pulled up, this piece/flap is entirely flat as originally produced.

We've shot images both with and without the camera lighting. The flash of the camera lightens the look and coloring of this piece, making it appear "whiter" and newer looking, rather than the aged, tanned paper look in person, but this lets you see the detail of this piece better. Not using the flash, on the other hand, makes this piece appear darker than it will look in person. The true coloring is a cross in between these two options (sorry, we did the best we could). Please use the zoom feature to examine closely.

Excellent aged paper vintage condition. There is some very slight, very light dirt or smudging on the topside of the cap, likely from being stored loose in a drawer for years (rather than in a protective sleeve), but nothing bad. Expected slight original printing flaws/uneven coloring, but nothing bad. Ready to add to your collection or display on a milk bottle you own.

Please note that this item must be shipped by U.S.P.S. First Class Mail Package rate (we will encase the milk bottle cap in cardboard to help prevent from bending). It can't be shipped via U.S.P.S. Media Mail, so pleased don't choose that option.

We have listed many milk bottles and other milk bottle caps for sale. If you are interested in more than one item, please e-mail us prior to placing the order. The system is set up to compute shipping for each item individually and will not calculate the savings you would get by shipping multiple items packed together. We would be pleased to calculate that for you.

2035

Vintage Milk Bottle Cap Mettowee Farms Upper Saddle River NJ Neat find out of a home. This is a vintage milk bottle cap or insert for an old glass milk bottle. This one does not have a staple in it nor a center tab which you would pull up to take this out of the milk bottle, so we think this piece was made to be inserted into another piece which together formed the milk bottle cap. We don't know that for certain, but that is our best guess (and we've seen some milk bottle caps made in that manner).

This was made for and marked for Mettowee Farms, Upper Saddle River, N.J. (New Jersey, NJ), for use with their Pasteurized Reconstituted Skim Milk. The cap also states, "Contains: Skim Milk from Reconstituted Nonfat Milk Solids, Not to be Sold After Date Stamped on Top". There is also a zip code included after New Jersey, 07458. Since zip codes were first introduced nationally in 1963, we believe this cap dates to the 1960s.

Round, with a diameter of about 1 9/16 inches, made of paperboard and a thickness of about 1/16th inch. This milk bottle cap is entirely flat as originally produced. From the pristine, very clean look, we think it was never used, but don't know that for certain.

We've shot images both with and without the camera lighting. The flash of the camera lightens the look and coloring of this piece, making it appear "whiter" and newer looking, rather than the aged, tanned paper look in person, but this lets you see the detail of this piece better. Excellent aged paper vintage condition. As stated prior the topside looks really clean and pristine and great. The underside has a mottled, dark look with a few tiny spots, but we think this is largely how made. Ready to add to your collection.

Please note that this item must be shipped by U.S.P.S. First Class Mail Package rate (we will encase the milk bottle cap in cardboard to help prevent from bending). It can't be shipped via U.S.P.S. Media Mail, so pleased don't choose that option.

Click for more detail...

1980

Milk Bottle Cap Lone Pine Farms Hanover NJ Never Used Flat Not Formed An unusual milk bottle cap find. This is a never used, new old stock piece, in as printed shape prior to it being formed into a milk bottle cap during the manufacturing or bottling process. It is a largely flat circular piece of paperboard or very thin cardboard that has pre-formed ridges in it. The center is flat without ridges and has the product and dairy identification information. Our guess is that during the bottling process the center flat portion would have been placed on top of the milk bottle and then the bottling machine would have crimped or formed the outer edges of the paperboard to hold the cap onto the bottle (we don't know that for certain, but this is how it looks to us).

Vintage milk bottle cap piece for Lone Pine Farms in Hanover, New Jersey. According to some internet research, this dairy began operation in 1905 and closed in 1985. We don't know when during that period this flat cap would have been used, but from the graphics and type we would guess that it was used during the 1930s-1950s period.

Copy on bottle cap identifies this was for Pasteurized Milk, Min. 4% Butterfat, but does not indicate the ounces or bottle/package size. There is a graphic of a cow head around which is stated "Guernsey Milk". The cap also states "Produced in New Jersey from T.B. Tested Cows, During the 24 Hour Period Ending 6 A.M." We think this refers to tuberculosis testing which we read was an issue that dairies would point out on their products during the 1930's, so that may further indicate this dates to the 1930s, we don't know for sure.

Measures about 4 1/8 inches in full diameter. The black circle graphic at the center measures about 1 15/16 inches in diameter. The base color is a clean white with orange and black printing. On the portion which would be crimped, there is a cross-hatch orange printing with 3 "S" letters in a Red Cross type graphic. The backside of this piece is all white with no printing.

We actually have a large number of this same milk bottle cap, all purchased at the same time from the same prior owner (along with two other similar caps which we are listing separately). The price shown is for one milk bottle cap. We've included images of one milk bottle cap as a sample.

We've provided 7 images to show both sides, close-ups, and to try and show the raised ridges to this piece as well as its thin paperboard construction. The camera lighting gave us trouble, sometimes blanding out the full piece with white "hot spots" so some images were shot with less lighting than others. That, of course, also makes some images look dark. We guarantee that in person you will see this is a clean white looking piece.

Excellent unused condition. Among all of these caps there are slight variations in condition but they are all very similar, none in bad shape. These have a bit of edge chipping and some light black ink smearing via thin lines or smudging (the amount of this varying by cap). There is also slight variation with the orange background printing, sometimes this not fully covering the area or there being some tiny white dots or yellow spots in the orange from uneven ink application during printing. This is all as made and to be expected, these things were not perfectly printed, and perhaps a bit of storage wear from however this was stored by the former owner. But they are in great overall shape and an unusual addition to any milk bottle cap collection.

If you are interested in more than one of these caps, or wish to combine purchase of one of these with one of the other listed milk bottle caps, please e-mail us prior to inputting the order. The system is set up to charge shipping as if each cap was shipped separately and will not automatically provide you the postage savings you would get from shipping more than one cap in the same package. We would be pleased to calculate that for you. These milk bottle caps will be shipped encased in cardboard to help protect them from bending during shipping.

We read that tuberculosis testing was an issue that dairies would point out on their products during the 1930's, so that may further indicate this dates to the 1930s, we don't know for sure.

Measures about 4 1/8 inches in full diameter. The smaller black circle graphic at the center measures about 1 15/16 inches in diameter. The base color is a clean white with orange and black printing.
