2212

Vintage Mid-Century Japan Santa Claus on Sled Christmas Tree Ornament Fun vintage Christmas Tree ornament out of a home. This is a figural Santa Claus riding on a sled. Has a paper label attached to underside of sled stating "Made in Japan" so we believe this to be a mid-century piece, post World War II, from the 1950s-1970s, although we don't know for certain.

Made of cloth, felt and pipe cleaners with plastic boots on his feet. Primarily red & white in coloring, with black for the boots, and having a gold lame type cloth collar under his beard that you really only see from the backside of the ornament. His face is a beige felt with black eyes, red circle mouth and white felt eyebrows, mustache and beard. Santa is holding a slightly curved white pipe cleaner that we guess is meant to be a plant piece or small tree, but we aren't certain. There is a gold hanging loop attached to the point of his red cap (under a circular white piece meant to be the ball at the end of his cap). The sled is candy cane red & white striped, a bendable one-piece construction with a red cardboard type piece on which Santa Claus is seated, not sure what it is on the inside of the bendable piece but fully covered on the outside with twisted strands of felt/fabric.

Measures about 3 3/4 inches in length x about 3 1/2 inches in height to the top of his head x about 1 1/2 inches in depth. Lightweight, weighing only half an ounce, this will be shipped in a box for safety.

Excellent condition with no major flaws. Everything seems present, with no pieces missing. In places there are excess strands/strings from the felt or gold lame collar but not bad at all (you could clip these off). In some places there is a touch of dust or light dirt (a tad on his face) or slight fabric wear as to be expected for an older used item, but really very clean and in great shape to hang on your tree. Please examine the images closely, using the zoom feature.

We are listing many other Christmas ornaments. Should you be interested in more than one listing, please contact us prior to placing the order so that we can provide you with shipping cost savings by packing them in one package. The system will automatically provide shipping costs for each listing as if mailed separately. We would be pleased to calculate and provide the postage savings for you.

Click for more detail...

1456

Pretty Antique Nippon China Azalea Creamer, Blue Rising Sun Mark This is a very pretty antique Nippon China creamer or small pitcher in the popular Azalea pattern. Fully marked on the underside base with the light blue Nippon Hand Painted "Rising Sun" mark. This is original Nippon China and thus was made during the period 1890-1921, although we don't know exactly when during that period it was made. The piece came out of an older person's home.

Measures 3 inches in height, about 5 inches in width (from outside of handle to tip of spout) and 3 1/4 inches in depth. White base porcelain (this creamer is translucent) with hand painted light pink azalea flowers with green and grey shadow leaves (2 open flowers on one side with two flower buds, and on the other side one open flower with two flower buds). There is a curved spout on one side and an open geometric handle on the other side. The top rim of the vintage creamer is trimmed in gold with gold line trimming on the handle, but it should be noted that a good bit of the gold line trim along the top rim has been worn away through age/use, with also some wear to the gold line trim on the handle. We have provided 8 images to try to show detail and the manufacturer mark. Please note that we had trouble getting the coloring to show correctly with our camera lighting so we've provided images both with and without the lighting. The pink flower coloring is the usual pale pink seen with Nippon pieces of this pattern (rather than the darker, more striking azalea pink seen on Noritake pieces of this pattern). The white "hot spots" in the images are reflections from the camera lighting on the glossy china surface.

Excellent, slightly used condition. There are no chips, cracks or crazing. There are some light scratches on the white outside surface, but you need to look at an angle in bright light to see these. We've mentioned above the gold wear. We want to point out that there is no chipping or flaking on the spout rim as is often the case. There are some pin/pit dots in the porcelain, some dark dots/tiny wear on the interior of the creamer, a touch of paint wear on the flowers (nothing bad), and a bit of wear to the underside base rim on which this piece sits. Really there's nothing to worry about here, it's a lovely piece in expected slightly used condition for its age.

A great usable and displayable vintage piece which would be a terrific addition to any collection of this nifty Azalea pattern china. Would also make a nice gift for a gardener who loves azaleas.

Click for more detail...

1457

Antique Nippon China 3 Piece Condiment with Lid & Spoon, Rising Sun Mk Neat little condiment server complete with lid and hard to find spoon (in one piece and great shape). Antique Nippon China fully marked with the Hand Painted Nippon blue "Rising Sun" mark. This is an original Nippon piece made between 1890 and 1921, although we do not know exactly when during that period it was made. This type of piece is often referred to as a condiment or mustard server, but could be used for any type of food addition handled via a small spoon.

White base porcelain (this piece is translucent) with cream colored paint near the top or outer edge (on the base piece and lid), highlighted with gold line trimming which has a raised line motif in spots including gold line trim on the side handle and the top of the lid finial/handle and gold dots on the china spoon. There are hand painted pink flowers (we don't know the type) with green leaves, with a large floral decoration on one side of the base piece and just a small one on the backside. We've provided 8 images to try and show details and the mark. Please note that we had trouble getting the coloring to show correctly with the camera lighting, so we've provided images both with and without the lighting. The white "hot spots" are reflections from the camera lighting on the glossy surface.

When "put together" with lid and spoon, this vintage condiment server sits about 3 inches in height, about 3 3/4 inches in greatest width (from outside of handle to opposite side of base) and about 3 inches in depth or diameter to this round piece. The china spoon measures about 3 1/4 inches in length.

Excellent overall condition. There are no major chips, cracks or crazing. We do see some minor flakes on the side of the inside part of the lid which fits within the base (not on the outer rim/edges) and some tiny, tiny dots or flakes as well as general expected wear on the underside of the base piece where it sits. There is some paint wear on the large flower motif on the base that you will see when you look close-up, but its not bad, the usual age/use wear and this piece has survived very well. There is some gold wear on the lines on the handle of the lid and use/age darkening on the unglazed inner rim of the base piece on which the lid sits. There is a raised extra touch of porcelain as the piece was made (it is glazed over) on the lid, some pin/pit dots in the porcelain, and other small expected use/age wear, but we are looking very closely to be fair. This piece is really in lovely shape and very usable or great for display.

Would make a nice addition for any set of Nippon China for use when entertaining, or a great small piece on display.

Click here to enlarge image and see more about item 1455: Vintage Noritake Azalea China Two Handle Cake Plate, M Red Mark, 19322

Click for more detail...

1455

Vintage Noritake Azalea China Two Handle Cake Plate, M Red Mark, 19322 Lovely two handled antique cake plate or serving dish in the popular Azalea China pattern. This plate bears the red Noritake mark on the underside base, stating "Noritake, M (in a wreath, for Morimura Brothers), Hand Painted, Made in Japan (followed by some Japanese letters/emblems), 19322". White porcelain base plate (it is translucent) with pink azalea hand painted flowers (two at top of plate with one at bottom), with side pierced curved handles trimmed in gold paint, and a gold line trim to the outer circular edge of the dish. While we do not know the age of this plate for certain, it is vintage, came out of an elderly person's home with other antique and vintage items, and from the mark we believe it dates to the 1920's or 1930's.

Measures 9 1/2 inches plate diameter from outer edges with azaleas, 9 3/4 inches width from outer edges of handles, and sits 1 3/4 inches in height. We've provided 7 images including close-up details and the manufacturer mark. We had problems showing the coloring accurately given the glossy plate surface and our camera lighting, so we shot images both with and without the camera lighting (since the lighting seemed to make the plate and coloring "more dramatic" than it is in person, although shooting without the lighting made things seem dark). This plate has the true traditional rich, bright pink Noritake coloring which we have seen/handled with other pieces in the past (Nippon Azalea pieces have a lighter/paler, less dramatic pink coloring). This plate weighs slightly over one pound unpacked.

Excellent, slightly used condition. There are no major chips, cracks or crazing. There are some light scratches on the white topside surface, but you need to look at an angle in bright light to see these. There is also general wear on the gold on the handles which is visible (scratches to white, line marks, dots, general wear), nothing unexpected for a piece which was used and the gold is still mainly there, but you need to know the gold handles won't look "new". Also on the underside there is some light scratches and expected wear from age/use to the underside base rim on which this piece sits, with some darkening, pit/pin dots, numerous tiny minor flaking/tiny chipping on this rim, general wear to be expected and nothing bad.

A great usable and displayable vintage piece which would be a terrific addition to any collection of this nifty Azalea pattern china. Would also make a nice gift for a gardener who loves azaleas.

Click here to enlarge image and see more about item 2210: Vintage Japan Christmas Ornament Marching Band Musician Bear Flute

Click for more detail...

2210

Vintage Japan Christmas Ornament Marching Band Musician Bear Flute Nifty find out of a home. This is a vintage hanging Christmas Tree ornament with a tag marking "Made in Japan" on the backside, so it is likely from the 1950's - 1970's period. It is a bear dressed in a Marching Band uniform who looks to be carrying a flute in his/her hands. It is possible that this is meant to be a baton like the leader of a Marching Band might carry, but from the outfit and the way the silver item is carried, we think this bear is a musician in the band who plays a flute.

Fully formed figure, made of fuzzy materials or flocking or cloth, with the uniform made of felt and the flute a rolled silver paper type item. Measures about 5 inches greatest length not including the hanging loop, about 2 5/8 inches greatest width from hand to hand, and about 1 7/8 inches greatest depth. Lightweight, weighing almost .4 ounces, this will be shipped in a small box for safety.

The hanging loop is neatly made a part of the outfit, seeming to be the gold vertical decoration on his hat but then extending further to the full loop. His uniform is red with red pants and suspenders (no shirt) and a red hat with gold trim and a slight black front piece. The bear is a nice fuzzy light beige/light brown color with a white formed nose, white felt on the interior of his ears and on the ends of his hands/paws and feet, with felt eyes of light blue with black pupils. There is also a small light blue bow tie hidden beneath the flute he is holding.

Very nice overall condition with no major flaws but there is some age/use wear. We see a bit of unravelling of the silver paper of the flute on one end but not bad. There is a bit of white form and flocking missing on one spot of his nose where it meets his face on his right side with a small curved indent here. We don't know if he was slightly marred in storage or bumped up to something, etc., but this doesn't jump out at you or would likely be noticed when hanging on a tree. There are some glue remains on his clothes as made, some very light spots in places which may be wear/dirt, other touches of light dirt, and likely other slight age/use/storage wear, but nothing to worry about here.

Please review the images, using the zoom feature for closer examination.

Click here to enlarge image and see more about item 2202: 1950s/60s Ninohira Japan Elf Santa Claus Christmas Ornament Figure

Click for more detail...

2202

1950s/60s Ninohira Japan Elf Santa Claus Christmas Ornament Figure Nifty find out of a home. This is a vintage figural Christmas tree hanging ornament which is meant to portray either one of Santa's elves or Santa Claus himself, we are not sure. Body is formed from soft rubber (you can squeeze this), with red felt for his hat that is trimmed in white around the hat base and a white pom pom end, and fake stringy fur for his soft beard. He is shown dressed in a Santa Claus suit which is red with white trim and a black belt, with black boots or shoes and must be wearing red gloves as his hands are red. What is most fun is his wonderful face, fully formed with big ears (or hair over his ears), puffy happy cheeks, a big pointed nose, raised white eyebrows, blue eyes with black centers and a red smiling mouth.

Measures about 4 1/2 inches tall, with greatest width of 2 3/4 inches across his ears and greatest depth of about 1 3/4 inches. There is a long gold plastic cord attached to his hat for hanging on a tree but he can also stand upright on his boots on a table. This old holiday ornament figure is light in weight, weighing about .6 ounce. He will be shipped in a box for protection.

This vintage Santa Claus is marked in two places. On the back of his head is an impressed "JAPAN". On the underside base of one foot is impressed "NINOHIRA JAPAN". From the style and markings we believe this to be a vintage ornament dating from the 1950's or 1960's, a mid-century modern piece, but we don't know that for certain. It is definitely not a new item.

We've provided 8 images to show this vintage elf from varied angles including a close-up of the Ninohira Japan mark on the underside of one boot. Please note that the camera light creates white "hot spot" reflections on the rubber surfaces. Please use the zoom feature to examine closely.

Very nice vintage used condition with no chips, cracks, crazing or large flaws, but this does have an overall old used/aged look as one would expect with some wear/flaws but nothing bad here. His face is a bit dusty/dirty with tiny dirt in the recessed areas as well as either old glue or dirt on his chin right above the beard, and the edge where the beard is glued looks aged/yellowed/slightly brown. The backside of his head where the hat is glued has something similar. There is a bit of dirt/dust in his beard and his felt hat has a touch of wear (nothing bad). On the back of his head on the rubber there is a bit of wear/spotting/rubbed wear, with also a rubbed wear spot on one ear/hair on the side. His clothed rubber body looks good and clean. You might be able to gently clean his face and the dust off with a Q-tip, but we did not want to attempt that and are selling as is/as found.

A great addition for any Christmas tree or a grouping of elves or Santa Claus figures.

We have listed many other Christmas ornaments. Should you be interested in more than one listing, please contact us prior to placing the order so that we can provide you with shipping cost savings by packing them in one package. The system will automatically provide shipping costs for each listing as if mailed separately. We would be pleased to calculate and provide the postage savings for you.

2198

Vintage 1960s Candy Cane Person Man Christmas Tree Hanging Ornament Fun vintage Christmas Tree hanging ornament. This is what we would call a Candy Cane Person or Candy Cane Man or Candy Can Boy ornament (doesn't look like a girl to us). It came out of a home and from the style we would guess this was made in the 1960s likely by a company from Japan, but there is no manufacturer or country of origin marking on this piece, so we can't guarantee the age here but it is definitely not new.

Made from a combination of materials but not from real candy canes. This uses two fake candy canes to form the person body, held together by a felt belt piece, onto which are attached two arms and the head of the figure who is wearing a decorated hat like one would see someone wearing when participating in a Marching Band. The candy canes appear to be made of a paperboard that is covered with a white exterior around which has been wrapped a red cellophane type ribbon. From the backside you can see that the head is attached to the canes using a pipe cleaner and we are guessing that the arms of this figure are also made from pipe cleaners that have been covered with felt for the clothing.

The head is made from a flocked or felt type material as it has a soft fur-type feel with formed ears on each side. The hat appears to be made of felt with ribbon adornment. There are gold seals with one attached on the felt belt, two at the front of the felt red cape the figure wears, and a fourth seal on the front of the hat. The figure's two hands in front are covered with a fur-type soft material. There are glued paper eyes (with an extra spot of white glue or other substance near one eye), with a red felt dot nose and curved smiling mouth. The ends of the candy canes at top are covered with the red cellophane ribbon, but the bottom ends are open, The original twisted silver hanging string piece is still fully attached to the top of the hat and usable. Everything is still attached nicely but if you shake this piece, the head will shake slightly.

Measures about 7 inches greatest length, about 3 1/2 inches width across the candy cane curves, about 3 3/8 inches width across the candy cane ends, and about 1 1/2 inches depth to the head. This old ornament is light in weight, weighing about .6 ounce. It will be shipped packed in a box for best protection.

We've provided 8 images to try and show from varied angles and sides, including a close-up of the front of the head and upper body. In the first image the vintage ornament is being held up by the hanging string to better show how it might look hanging on a Christmas tree. Please use the zoom feature to examine closely.

Very nice vintage condition with no large flaws, pieces missing or broken, but does have an older aged, slightly worn look as one would expect rather than looking brand new. Nothing appears missing to us, unless the bottom ends of the candy canes were once covered in the red cellophane ribbon like the top ends, we're not sure. This piece doesn't look dirty, but it has that slightly worn old or dusty look, with some slight dirt or dust from use/time but we have not attempted to clean. You can see several frayed strings from the belt felt edge, some slight dust/dirt/light spotting on the peach or flesh colored head and on the red felt hat, some dust and tiny dot spotting on the blue shirt arms and red cape in the back, some stray colored marks on the candy canes, a bit of unravelling to the red cellophane ribbon on one candy cane near the bottom, etc., other slight general wear/age wear/storage wear. But none of this is bad and all adds to the believeability of age and the charm of this piece.

A great eye-catching vintage Christmas ornament addition for any Christmas tree....just don't let the kids reach for this to try and eat the candy canes!

247248

Lovely Hand Painted Nippon China Plate, 10 In., Tiny Rim Chips Very pretty hand painted china antique Nippon china dinner plate, realistically painted in pale colors with gold trim, with scene of flowers, trees and water (and suggestion of two small sailboats). Measures 10 inches in diameter and sits about 1 inch in height. Fully marked on backside with antique green insignia, Hand Painted Nippon with M in a wreath (see image). This is an original Nippon piece made between 1890 and 1921, although we do not know exactly when during that period it was made. Please note that the colors are brighter and more vivid than how they appear in the images (with the yellow more of a lemon color, and the pinkish orange of the flowers more salmon) - the lighting from the camera dulled their look. For shipment purposes, this plate weighs over one pound unpacked.

While otherwise in excellent condition, we must point out that there are 2 tiny chips on the topside of this vintage plate in the gold trim at the plate's lower rim. One measures about 1/8 inch wide, with the other slightly larger at 3/16 inch in width. Both of these are shown in the images below. From their size and location, we believe these may have been caused by hanging with a metal plate hanger that wasn't padded on the ends. As such, these also may be largely covered up if the plate were to be hung again. They also might not be noticeable if slightly touched up with gold paint, but we are selling the piece as is, as found.

The only other thing we note is a little bit of unevenness in the paint in the center area which may have been caused in the manufacture if it was not fully painted well, or may be a touch of wear, but this doesn't detract from the attractiveness of the plate. There are some stray gold paint marks on the backside of the plate, and the expected bit of wear on the underside rim on which the piece sits. An eye-catching piece which would look lovely as part of a Nippon china or hand painted china collection or a decorative wall hanging.

247252

Lovely Vintage Nippon China Two Handle Vase, Green M in Wreath Mark Beautiful hand painted china antique Nippon china vase with double handles. This piece is fully marked on the underside base with the green Hand Painted Nippon mark with an "M" in a wreath. This is an original Nippon piece made between 1890 and 1921, although we do not know exactly when during that period it was made. This vintage vase is decorated with 4 scenic panels of trees, plants & water, raised gold "dot" lines and other gold trim, painted and raised gold flowers, and light blue highlighting as the "predominate" color. The two handles adorn the flat topside of vase.

Measures about 5 1/2 inches in height, rounded square body has width of 3 1/4 inches, greatest width handle to handle of 4 1/8 inches, top opening oval width of 1 1/2 inches. In the images, the white hot spots are lighting reflection from the camera. The camera lighting also changes the light blue color a bit, it is actually more of a sky blue color.

Wonderful overall condition for its age, no chips, cracks, or crazing, but it's not mint. We need to note that there is gold wear, particularly evident on the top and sides of the handles, and gold line wear elsewhere. There is also some outer surface wear/rubbed areas, but these are not immediately visible, and are only seen when looked at closely at an angle in bright light. And there are a few spots or stains on the inside of the piece, and some expected wear to the underside base on which the piece sits.

A very attractive piece which has survived well. Terrific as part of a Nippon china, Japanese china, Japan china or hand painted china collection, or for display use as an accent piece.

Click for more detail...

1656

Yokohama, Japan 1892 Shepp’s Photographs of World Original Book Page Original book page which shows a photograph with a paragraph of descriptive copy, from the 1892 edition of "Shepp’s Photographs of the World". This book was arranged and explained by James W. Shepp and Daniel B. Shepp, sold by subscription only, and published by Globe Bible Publishing Company, Chicago, Ill. And Philadelphia, Penna. Not a reproduction, but page from an antique original issue of this 1892 book (we guarantee this), with an antique photograph print on one side of the page with the reverse side blank. The old book covers were in very bad shape, so we removed the good pages and are selling them separately/priced each.

This antique black & white book page photo print is an aerial view of Yokohama, Japan with a paragraph describing the port and town, which is near Tokio (how the book spells it, we believe they mean Tokyo) and is situated on the Bay of Tokio (Bay of Tokyo, but the bay is not shown here). This is page #425 from the book (the page number appears in small print under the paragraph of copy).

Excellent condition vintage black & white photograph, on full page measuring about 8 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches. We have scanned the actual book print page into our computer so you can see the condition. Please note, however, because this is a scan and not a photograph of the page, if you click on the option to look at a "close-up" version, the system shows the book page with all kinds of weird lines on the photo that do not exist when you see this in person. Unfortunately, we do not know of a way to correct that....the non-close-up image of the book page is a true representation of the page itself....it looks as one would expect a printed photo to look on a book page.

The page itself is an off white/ivory aged color. You can see that there is some paper tearing in the margin area above the top of the photo (presumably due to this page once having been stuck to the back side of the page prior in the book). There is also a rough edge where the page was separated from the rest of the book, some wrinkling/slight page creasing in the lower corners, and other expected minor handling wear for a book page, but we believe all this could be easily covered with matting and/or not be noticeable if this piece were to be framed.

We are listing other book photographs from Japan and many other places around the world. Please see our other individual listings. A terrific piece to add to a collection related to Japan or Yokohama in specific. Would make a neat gift for someone whose family came from this area.

Relative to shipping, please note: While this is a book page/print, this item CAN NOT be shipped via U.S.P.S. Media Mail per the post office. Please do not select this shipping option because we will have to contact you and change the shipping to something else, increasing your postage cost. Also, if you are interested in more than one of these 1892 Shepp’s Photographs of the World book pages, please contact us before placing the order. The shipping information has been inputted for a purchase of just one and will not calculate the savings you would get when purchasing more than one shipped together in the same package (we will need to handle this for you).
