Brookmead Guernsey Dairies Qt Glass Milk Bottle Wayne Tredyffrin PA Fun find out of a home but with condition issues as will be detailed below. This is a vintage glass dairy bottle or milk bottle in the tall quart size. Used by and marked for Brookmead Guernsey Dairies of Wayne, PA, which is in Tredyffrin Township in Chester County, Pennsylvania.

Tall clear glass round milk bottle with light orange embossing. Measures about 9 1/2 inches in height. Bottle has a smaller top opening, then a long slender neck which opens to a bulbous base. Measures about 2 1/8 inches diameter for the full top, and about 1 5/8 inches for the top opening diameter. This is the type of bottle which would take a flat, inset, paperboard milk bottle cap piece (and has a molded slight/thin inner glass rim inset from the top, we do not have the cap). It has very thick glass rimming the top opening (about 5/16 inch in width/glass thickness here), with a molded diamond hatch design under the top rim. Greatest width to the bottle is about 3 5/8 inches. This old bottle is heavy, weighing 22.3 ounces unpacked.

On one side is embossed the words "Brookmead Guernsey Dairies, Wayne, PA." On the opposite side is embossed "Please Return Bottles Daily". In raised molded letters along the base on the Brookmead side it reads "One Quart Liquid". On the other side of the bottle in raised molded letters along the base it states "Sealed BB48 Registered". On the underside base in raised glass molding is a large central "B", with "Duraglas" to one side and on the other side, the numbers "17" and "46" with a symbol inbetween. There is also a small circle at the center of the "B".

This is definitely a vintage piece from the style, markings and wear. We believe it likely dates to the 1940's or earlier. From some internet research, Brookmead originally was a 156 acre dairy farm in this area along Route 363. This land had begun development for suburban housing by the mid 1950's, so we believe that the mid 1950's would be the latest time frame for this older milk bottle. You can see a number of tiny bubbles in the glass as made which are also indicative of age, as well as some manufactured striations, pin/pit dotting, etc. in the glass.

This was very difficult to photograph to show condition and coloring well. In person, the orange embossing is a faded light orange color, but it is not even throughout, with the orange color on the Brookmead side darker on the right letters/words than on the left ones. The reverse is true on the opposite side, with several left letters darker than those on the right...but all embossing looks faded although still readable. You can see some of this in the images, although some images make all of this appear darker than you will see in person.

We shot images with the camera lighting (which causes white "hot spot" reflections on the smooth glass) and without the camera light while holding the bottle up to a glass door for a natural lighting source (this makes the orange embossing seem darker but easier to read). There are 8 images including close-ups, so please look across all of these to get the best idea, and use the zoom feature for best detail.

Beyond the faded orange embossing noted above, you can see in the images that a number of the embossed letters have surface wear/embossed flaking, although still fully readable. Importantly, in the last image we tried to show that there is a hole in this bottle, near the base, to the lower right of the Wayne, PA lettering. This has a defined, slightly over 1/16 inch hole width opening with circular glass cracking/lines surrounding this and some diagonal crack lines radiating outward from this....net, this bottle can not be used to hold water as a vase in its current condition (you could plug this to do so, but we are selling as is/as found). There is also a lot of white skimming/spotting/discoloration on the interior of the bottle which we tried to show in some images (this was hard to photograph). There are no other cracks or chips, but usual evidence of age/wear/use on this bottle via scratches, surface wear, scars, dot/dirt dot spots, etc., as to be expected. If one were to fill this with white styrofoam as many folks do, you might not see this bottle wear we don't know, but we show items without that to better show the true condition.

Click for more detail...

1987

Half Pint Orange Farms Dairy Glass Milk Bottle Dallas PA Luzerne Co Fun find out of a home. This is a vintage glass dairy bottle or milk bottle or cream bottle in the small half pint (1/2 pint) size. Used by and marked for Orange Farms Dairy of Dallas, PA, which is a borough in Luzerne County in Pennsylvania.

Clear glass collectible milk bottle in a four panel, square shape with rounded corners/side edges, with bright orange embossing. Measures about 5 7/16 inches in height, and about 2 1/4 inches in width and depth. The round/circular top is overall 1 1/2 inches in diameter, with an opening diameter of about 1 inch. We believe this is the type of bottle which would have had a crimped metal type cap, since it does not have the molded slight/thin inner glass rim at the bottom of the neck portion on which a flat milk bottle cap would rest (we do not have the cap). It has very thick glass rimming the top opening (about 1/4 inch in width/glass thickness here), with molded protruding bumps under the top rim.

All embossing are words. On one side it states "Orange Farms Dairy, Dallas, PA. 18612". The opposing outer side again states the company name, with a product listing below that "Try our Cream, Cottage Cheese, Buttermilk, Chocolate Milk, Orange Drink, Orange Juice, Eggs". The other two square body sides are blank/have no embossing. There are raised molded letters along the base on all four sides but these are very hard to read, not due to wear but they are just not strongly raised letters. We can make out "Half Pint" on one side, with "Liquid" on the next panel side, then perhaps "3 Reg", with finally perhaps "Sealed 52S" on the last panel side. On the underside base there is impressed into the glass a small central circle with two lightly impressed numbers near this which we think are "69".

This is a vintage piece from the style. From some internet research, zip codes were introduced by the post office in July 1963 so we are guessing that this bottle dates to the 1960s. The old empty bottle weighs about 8 ounces unpacked.

Because of the great condition of this bottle, it photographed fairly easily. The 8 images are shot using the camera lighting so this creates white "hot spot" reflections on the smooth glass surfaces. We've provided images showing varied sides and close-ups. Please use the zoom feature to examine closely.

Very nice overall condition with no chips, cracks or pieces missing that we see. The orange embossing is in great shape, with just a touch of wear, nothing bad (there are dots of wear at the top of the "g" and "e" in the larger "Orange" name on the front side). As made, there are a few bubbles & striations in the glass. There is a bit of expected age/use wear to the glass but nothing bad at all. You can see a bit of white skim along the interior base (not bad but there), and minor expected wear on the bottle body, such as dots, some pin/pit dots, small scratches/scrapes, a few spots, etc., but not much....this piece has survived very well.

A neat addition to any collection of milk bottles, particularly one related to this specific geographical area. Also could be added to a collection generally related to historical items from Dallas, in Luzerne County in Penna., or displayed as part of country kitchen decor.

Click here to enlarge image and see more about item 1621: Vintage 1950s Quart Glass Milk Bottle, Sunny Slope Dairy

Click for more detail...

1621

Vintage 1950s Quart Glass Milk Bottle, Sunny Slope Dairy This is a vintage clear glass quart size milk bottle marked on two sides of the top shoulder in red letters, "Sunny Slope Dairy". There is no indication of where this dairy is/was located. When we tried to research it, we came up with several Sunny Slope Dairies in several different states, so we can not tell you which one this came from. On the underside base there are only two raised numbers, 25 and 72. We think this bottle dates from the 1950s but question whether the 72 is meant to indicate the year the bottle was made (1972) and just don't know here. There are raised letters on the lower outside near the base which state "One Quart", "Liquid", "Reg" (presumably for Registered) and "Sealed NU". There is a shape inbetween the "Sealed" and "NU" which perhaps is a keystone shape as is used on signs for the state of Pennsylvania (PA) but we don't know this for certain. Finally, on two sides on the shoulder is also the raised marking "1 QT".

Old milk bottle measures about 8 3/4 inches in height with a rounded square shape that is about 3 1/8 inches on each side. The glass bottle shows two mold lines (one each on two sides of the bottle vertically). Empty dairy bottle weighs over one pound unpacked. We've provided multiple images to try and show from all angles. There is a raised line design rimming the upper lip of the bottle. We do not have the original cap.

Very nice old used condition with no major flaws. The glass itself is very clear although you can see many scratches, scarred marks, spotting, rubbed marks, etc. from use/wear. There are no chips or cracks. There is a bit of white skim on the lower inside base and a number of large vertical whiteish lines on one side. Underside base has some straw marks in the glass as made, spotting/dirt, etc. as to be expected.

A nice example to add to a collection or to use as a nifty vase for flowers.

Please note that we are listing a number of other milk bottles. Should you be interested in more than one, please e-mail us prior to placing the order. The system has been set up to calculate shipping costs for just one listing/bottle and will not provide you with the savings you would receive by packing more than one bottle in the same box. We will need to calculate that for you.

Click for more detail...

2032

Vintage Never Used Milk Bottle Cap Insert Kendig Dairy Millersville PA Neat find out of a home. This is a never used, never opened vintage milk bottle cap or insert for an old glass milk bottle. This was made for and marked for Kendig Dairy of Millersville, PA (Pennsylvania, Penna.), for use with their Pasteurized Homogenized Milk.

Round, with a diameter of about 1 5/8 inches, made of paperboard with a single staple in the cap and a thickness of about 1/16th inch. We are saying this was never used because the flap one would pull up on in the center of the cap in order to lift the cap insert out of the top of the bottle has never been pulled up, this piece/flap is entirely flat as originally produced.

We've shot images both with and without the camera lighting. The flash of the camera lightens the look and coloring of this piece, making it appear "whiter" and newer looking, rather than the aged, tanned paper look in person, but this lets you see the detail of this piece better. Not using the flash, on the other hand, makes this piece appear darker than it will look in person. The true coloring is a cross in between these two options (sorry, we did the best we could). Please use the zoom feature to examine closely.

Excellent aged paper vintage condition. Shows expected wear/discoloration on the underside likely from being stored loose in a drawer (not in a protective sleeve) for many years. Expected slight original printing flaws/uneven coloring, but nothing bad. Ready to add to your collection or display on a milk bottle you own.

Please note that this item must be shipped by U.S.P.S. First Class Mail Package rate (we will encase the milk bottle cap in cardboard to help prevent from bending). It can't be shipped via U.S.P.S. Media Mail, so pleased don't choose that option.

We have listed many milk bottles and other milk bottle caps for sale. If you are interested in more than one item, please e-mail us prior to placing the order. The system is set up to compute shipping for each item individually and will not calculate the savings you would get by shipping multiple items packed together. We would be pleased to calculate that for you.

Click for more detail...

2033

Vtg Never Used Milk Bottle Cap Insert Fitzgerald Farms Watertown NY Neat find out of a home. This is a never used, never opened vintage milk bottle cap or insert for an old glass milk bottle.

This was made for and marked for Fitzgerald Farms of Watertown, New York (NY), for use with their Grade A Pasteurized Milk. The cap also mentions the company name, W. H. Fitzgerald Est., and phone number, "Phone 4779-J2". Since this is shown as a 6 digit phone number with no area code, and since some internet research suggests that area codes first began use in 1947, these bottle caps were likely produced for use prior to 1947, although we don't know exactly when.

We actually have multiple copies of this same milk bottle cap insert, all identical, which came out of the same home. They are priced individually/each. We have shown images of just one milk bottle cap for perspective.

Please use the zoom feature to examine closely.

Excellent aged paper vintage condition. There may be slight expected original printing flaws/uneven coloring, but nothing bad. There may be slight variations in the printing across the multiple caps as usually occurs, but nothing bad at all, all are in great shape. The backsides are evenly tanned (some may show slight storage wear/marks on the back side but again, nothing bad).

Vtg Never Used Milk Bottle Cap Insert Gramana Dairy Phillipsburg, NJ Neat find out of a home. This is a never used, never opened vintage milk bottle cap or insert for an old glass milk bottle. This was made for and marked for Gramana Dairy Co. of Phillipsburg, N.J. (New Jersey, NJ), for use with their Pasteurized Milk. The cap also states "Produced at Gramana Farm Thursday".

Round, with a diameter of about 1 5/8 inches, made of paperboard with a single staple in the cap and a thickness of about 1/16th inch. 2035

Vintage Milk Bottle Cap Mettowee Farms Upper Saddle River NJ Neat find out of a home. This is a vintage milk bottle cap or insert for an old glass milk bottle. This one does not have a staple in it nor a center tab which you would pull up to take this out of the milk bottle, so we think this piece was made to be inserted into another piece which together formed the milk bottle cap. We don't know that for certain, but that is our best guess (and we've seen some milk bottle caps made in that manner).

This was made for and marked for Mettowee Farms, Upper Saddle River, N.J. (New Jersey, NJ), for use with their Pasteurized Reconstituted Skim Milk. The cap also states, "Contains: Skim Milk from Reconstituted Nonfat Milk Solids, Not to be Sold After Date Stamped on Top". There is also a zip code included after New Jersey, 07458. Since zip codes were first introduced nationally in 1963, we believe this cap dates to the 1960s.

Round, with a diameter of about 1 9/16 inches, made of paperboard and a thickness of about 1/16th inch. This milk bottle cap is entirely flat as originally produced. From the pristine, very clean look, we think it was never used, but don't know that for certain.

As stated prior the topside looks really clean and pristine and great. The underside has a mottled, dark look with a few tiny spots, but we think this is largely how made. Ready to add to your collection.

1708

Banana Flavored Milk Bottle Cap, Brookfield Dairy, Hellertown, PA Nifty find out of a home, a vintage milk bottle cap for Banana Flavored Milk (we don't see caps for this flavor often). We do not have the milk bottle itself, only the cap. Made for and marked with "Brookfield Dairy, Hellertown, PA (Pennsylvania, Pa, Penn., Penna.). Besides indicating in bold letters "Banana Flavored Milk", the cap states "Pasteurized" and the ingredient list "Contains: Sugar, Syrup, Imitation Fruit Flavors, Certified Food Color & Fruit Acid". As a nice touch, the name of the dairy, its location and the fact that the product was pasteurized are printed in yellow to support the banana flavoring, although this does make those words harder to read (which is likely why they used black ink for the flavoring name and ingredient list).

The cap is round, measuring in total about 2 1/4 inches in diameter. It consists of an interior lower section which appears to have a printed paperboard inset (this is not loose or falling out but seems inserted firmly) on the topside that has all the words on it, and a raised outer/bottom section that is either celluloid or a waxed paper, we are not sure which. The inset lower paperboard section measures about 1 5/8 inches in diameter, as measured from the underside. This leaves about a 1/4 inch circular area to fit over the top rim of the milk bottle, again as measured from the underside. We've provided six images of the top and underside, shot in different camera lighting options since the light tended to "bland out" the details of the piece with white "hot spots". We do not know the age of this milk bottle cap, but it is definitely vintage.

Very nice old used condition with no major flaws. There are no rips, tears, chunks missing, major staining, etc. There is some very light spotting/discoloration on the center paperboard section, with a touch of smearing to some of the words in the ingredient list, but none of this is bad. Surrounding celluloid or waxed paper part has a generally worn look on the inner vertical edge as well as the underside and elsewhere, with all-over spotted appearance on the underside, but we can't tell if this is general aging or how this piece was originally made. It just doesn't have a clean, sharp, pristine look, but we wouldn't expect that on a piece like this. It looks older and used and terrific to us.

A fun find which will hopefully fit your Banana Flavored Milk bottle or at least add a new flavor to your milk bottle cap collection!

Please note that we have also listed another milk bottle cap from this same dairy for their Homogenized Pasteurized Milk. If you are interested in both of these, please e-mail us prior to placing the order. The system is set up to compute shipping for each item individually and will not calculate the savings you would get by shipping these both packed together. We will need to calculate that for you.

2036

Vtg Never Used Milk Bottle Cap Insert William Kayfus Sandy Hook CT Neat find out of a home. This is a never used, never opened vintage milk bottle cap or insert for an old glass milk bottle.

This was made for and marked for William Kayfus (Dairy Farm) of Sandy Hook, Conn. (Connecticut, CT) for use with their Milk. The cap states "Approved Milk from Tuberculin Tested Cows". From some internet research, we read that tuberculosis testing was an issue that dairies would point out on their products during the 1930's, so we think this milk bottle cap dates to that period, although we can't guarantee that (but it's our best guess).

Shows a little bit of light dirt/smudges/wear on the topside, nothing bad, and a touch of expected variation in the printing coverage as often occurred. The underside also has a bit of wear/discoloration and two indented lines and some slight paper edge wear, but nothing bad.

Vintage Milk Bottle Cap, Boyson's Dairy, Newtown, CT Neat find out of a home.

This was made for and marked for Boyson's Dairy, Newtown, Conn. (Connecticut, CT), for use with their Milk. The cap also has a small symbol on it, a circle with a Red Cross type symbol with an "S" at its center.

Round, with a diameter of about 1 5/8 inches, made of paperboard and a thickness of about 1/16th inch. This milk bottle cap is entirely flat as originally produced.

While still nice and very usable overall, this milk bottle cap shows age/wear. The topside overall looks slightly dirty/used, with a number of light dirt or smudged areas, including some darkening/smudging along the outer edge, so this piece could have been used or originally come off a used/distributed milk bottle. The underside also has slight wear, but not bad. Still hard to find and ready to add to your collection.

Please note that this item must be shipped by U.S.P.S. First Class Mail Package rate (we will encase the milk bottle cap in cardboard to help prevent from bending). It can't be shipped via U.S.P.S. Media Mail, so pleased don't choose that option.

We don't know that for certain, but that is our best guess (and we've seen some milk bottle caps made in that manner).

This was made for and marked for Erdman Bros. (Brothers, Dairy), for use with their Skim Milk. The cap also states their street location, Carbon St., and has a small circle symbol at the top which has a Red Cross type symbol in it.

This cap is slightly smaller than some of the others we've been listing.
Round, with a diameter of about 1 3/8 inches, made of paperboard and a thickness of about 1/16th inch. This milk bottle cap is entirely flat as originally produced.

We've shot images both with and without the camera lighting. The flash of the camera lightens the look and coloring of this piece, making it appear "whiter" and newer looking, rather than the aged, tanned paper look in person, but this lets you see the detail of this piece better. Very nice overall aged paper vintage condition. This has a very slightly
used look, not specifically dirty or smudged, but not pristine. It may be that this was used or taken off a used milk bottle, or perhaps stored in a manner that it got slightly dirty/dusty/rubbed against other items, just looks generally older and perhaps slightly worn, but not really bad. There is a little light spotting in the upper area near the "B" in "Bros." and a bit of paperboard wear near the town name at the bottom. The underside also has an overall slightly dirty look, more so than on the topside.

Click for more detail...

1980

Milk Bottle Cap Lone Pine Farms Hanover NJ Never Used Flat Not Formed An unusual milk bottle cap find. This is a never used, new old stock piece, in as printed shape prior to it being formed into a milk bottle cap during the manufacturing or bottling process. It is a largely flat circular piece of paperboard or very thin cardboard that has pre-formed ridges in it. The center is flat without ridges and has the product and dairy identification information. Our guess is that during the bottling process the center flat portion would have been placed on top of the milk bottle and then the bottling machine would have crimped or formed the outer edges of the paperboard to hold the cap onto the bottle (we don't know that for certain, but this is how it looks to us).

Vintage milk bottle cap piece for Lone Pine Farms in Hanover, New Jersey. According to some internet research, this dairy began operation in 1905 and closed in 1985. We don't know when during that period this flat cap would have been used, but from the graphics and type we would guess that it was used during the 1930s-1950s period.

Copy on bottle cap identifies this was for Pasteurized Milk, Min. 4% Butterfat, but does not indicate the ounces or bottle/package size. There is a graphic of a cow head around which is stated "Guernsey Milk". The cap also states "Produced in New Jersey from T.B. Tested Cows, During the 24 Hour Period Ending 6 A.M." We think this refers to tuberculosis testing which we read was an issue that dairies would point out on their products during the 1930's, so that may further indicate this dates to the 1930s, we don't know for sure.

Measures about 4 1/8 inches in full diameter. The black circle graphic at the center measures about 1 15/16 inches in diameter. The base color is a clean white with orange and black printing. On the portion which would be crimped, there is a cross-hatch orange printing with 3 "S" letters in a Red Cross type graphic. The backside of this piece is all white with no printing.

We actually have a large number of this same milk bottle cap, all purchased at the same time from the same prior owner (along with two other similar caps which we are listing separately). The price shown is for one milk bottle cap. We've included images of one milk bottle cap as a sample.

We've provided 7 images to show both sides, close-ups, and to try and show the raised ridges to this piece as well as its thin paperboard construction. The camera lighting gave us trouble, sometimes blanding out the full piece with white "hot spots" so some images were shot with less lighting than others. That, of course, also makes some images look dark. We guarantee that in person you will see this is a clean white looking piece.

Excellent unused condition. Among all of these caps there are slight variations in condition but they are all very similar, none in bad shape. These have a bit of edge chipping and some light black ink smearing via thin lines or smudging (the amount of this varying by cap). There is also slight variation with the orange background printing, sometimes this not fully covering the area or there being some tiny white dots or yellow spots in the orange from uneven ink application during printing. This is all as made and to be expected, these things were not perfectly printed, and perhaps a bit of storage wear from however this was stored by the former owner. But they are in great overall shape and an unusual addition to any milk bottle cap collection.

If you are interested in more than one of these caps, or wish to combine purchase of one of these with one of the other listed milk bottle caps, please e-mail us prior to inputting the order. The system is set up to charge shipping as if each cap was shipped separately and will not automatically provide you the postage savings you would get from shipping more than one cap in the same package. We would be pleased to calculate that for you. These milk bottle caps will be shipped encased in cardboard to help protect them from bending during shipping.
