2240

Horse Rider Cup & Saucer China Souvenir Vanderbilt Inn Hyde Park NY Pretty, vintage souvenir china demitasse cup & saucer. Has remains of a paper label on underside of saucer indicating that this was a souvenir for the Vanderbilt Inn in Hyde Park, New York. Only partial remains of this label is still firmly attached to saucer, but this is legible.

Decoration on both pieces is of a horse and rider or a horseback rider who is accompanied by a second horse which is depicted carrying the male rider's bags or parcels and his gun. They appear to be riding along a road in a country type setting. The same decoration appears on both sides of the cup and on the center of the saucer. Both pieces are trimmed with light green and light brown lines. These are made of china or ceramic (these are not porcelain or bone china as they are not translucent).

Both pieces are stamped in black on the undersides with "Made in England For PV". From some internet research, the PV is believed to indicate that this is the Peasant Village brand or line of china pieces. The PV line was marketed and made for Mitteldorfer Straus, who was a wholesaler and distributor based in New York. We do not know which company in England made these vintage pieces for Mitteldorfer Straus. We believe these were made either pre World War II (pre WW2) or after the war in the 1950s/60s (mid century pieces) since this company could not make their pieces in England or the United Kingdom during the war period. The look of these pieces suggests to us that that are 1930's or 1950's/60's souvenir items.

Round saucer measures 4 7/8 inches diameter and sits about 5/8 inch in height with upwardly curved rim and depressed circular center to seat the cup. Straight walled cup with curved side handle measures 2 3/8 inches in height, about 3 1/16 inches greatest width (outside of handle to opposite side of cup) and 2 1/4 inches cup depth. Together these 2 vintage china pieces sit about 2 1/2 inches in height and weigh slightly over 6 ounces unpacked.

We've provided 8 images to show from varied angles including the manufacturer mark on both pieces. The camera light causes white "hot spot" reflections on the smooth, glazed surfaces. Please use the zoom feature to examine closely.

Very nice older condition, clean and without chips, but showing some signs of age. The saucer has overall crazing but no crazing visible on the cup. Transfer design is bright and colorful. There are some small scratch lines on the designs, but only a few, not bad, and they don't detract from the great look (you only see these if you look very closely in bright light). We don't believe this was used due to how clean the cup is, inside and out, so the scratches and other light wear likely occurred during cleaning/dusting/handling over the years. Touch of wear/darkening to underside base of cup as expected. Nothing to worry about here, in great displayable condition.

Neat addition to any collection related to horses, or a vintage souvenir grouping for Hyde Park, NY, or one related in general to hotel, motel, lodging or hospitality industry souvenirs.

2076

Souvenir China Dish Old North Church Boston MA Jonroth Adams Revere Nifty piece of vintage souvenir china for a historical church building in Massachusetts associated with the American Revolution. This is a small dish or low bowl showing the Old North Church in Boston, Mass.

From some internet research, the Old North Church was built in 1723. It is perhaps most famous as the starting point for the legendary ride of Paul Revere in 1775 during the Revolutionary War. Paul Revere had requested lanterns to be hung in the church steeple as a signal for him to begin his ride, "One if by land, two if by sea...", as told by Henry W. Longfellow in his poem, Paul Revere's Ride. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places (was designated as a National Historic Landmark) in 1961.

We believe this souvenir item was made in the early to mid 1900's from the markings on the backside. The back states "Old English Staffordshire Ware" in a curve above the Jonroth, England crown & circle mark, with "Made by Adams England" below this. Jonroth was an importer of souvenir pieces (brought in under the brand name, Old English Staffordshire Ware), who used several manufacturing companies in England for production, in this case using the William Adams & Sons factory.

The small dish is round with a diameter of 3 1/4 inches and sits 1/2 inch in height. This piece is china or pottery, not porcelain since it is not translucent. The coloring is red & white, with the graphics a red transfer design on white base pottery. The topside show part of the church and its steeple with nearby buildings, with "Old North Church" at the top. Please note that the transfer of the word "North" as made is not clear like the other words, with over-striking or double striking effecting the "R" and "T" so the word looks longer than it should and doesn't read clearly.

We've provided 8 images, showing both sides, from differing angles and close-ups. Please note that the camera light causes white "hot spot" reflections, sometimes "blanding out" some of the detail, so some of the images were shot without the camera light (which makes these photos seem darker). Please use the zoom feature to examine closely. This piece weighs about 1 1/2 ounces unpacked and will be shipped in a box for safety.

Very nice overall condition, with no chips or cracks. We can see the beginning of crazing on this piece, with a large curved crazing line in the glaze and a few smaller lines off this, in the vicinity of the "Old North Church" wording on the topside (we don't see any crazing anywhere else, and these are lines in the glazing, not cracks in the piece). There are some pin/pit dots in the glazing and stray red dots from the transfer process as made, a few tiny surface scratches/wear marks (you need to look at an angle in bright light to see these), and likely other minor age wear, but nothing bad. On the underside there are some unglazed spots as made and another light spot on top of the glazing that we aren't sure if this is a glazing error or a spot of some sort made on this piece later. Please see earlier note regarding the manufacturing transfer process with the word "North".

A fun piece to add to any collection of MA or Boston souvenirs, a collection related to churches, buildings & architecture, or one related to historical places associated with Paul Revere and the War for Independence. Could also make an interesting small gift for a lover of Longfellow literature and his poems.

Click for more detail...

2107

1962 Seattle Worlds Fair Souvenir China Dish Space Needle Monorail Nifty small vintage souvenir china dish out of a home. This is a souvenir piece from the 1962 Seattle World's Fair or Century 21 Exposition, held from April 21 to October 21, 1962 in Seattle, Washington. Graphics on the front side show and label the Space Needle in the center, and around this the Monorail, U.S. Science Pavilion, Washington State Coliseum and The Glittering Gayway, an amusement park area shown via a Carousel or Merry-go-Round and some other tents. Labelled on backside via 2 paper or foil oval labels which are still fully attached, stating "Made in Japan" and the manufacturer, "Century Souvenir Co., Inc."

Round, measuring 4 inches in diameter, with slightly upturned edges so sits about 5/8 inch in height. Weighs about 2 1/4 ounces and will be shipped in a small box for protection. This is made of porcelain or china (it is translucent), with a white base, gold line trim at the outer topside edge, and full color printed graphics. The backside has two manufactured holes in the base rim on which the piece sits, for ease in attaching a string or wire for hanging, should you wish to do so (no string or wire is currently attached to this piece).

We've provided 8 images to show from varied angles, including close-ups of the paper/foil labels and the wording. Please note that the camera lighting causes white "hot spot" reflections on the smooth surfaces. Please use the zoom feature to examine closely.

Very nice vintage condition, ready to display. There are no chips, cracks, crazing or large flaws, but this piece does show some expected age/storage wear. If viewed at an angle in bright light, there are some topside surface scratches/scratch lines in the graphics, but not bad. There are touches of topside surface wear as one would expect from age, dusting or cleaning, such as some minor wear/wear dots in some of the letters of "Seattle World's Fair", a touch of wear elsewhere on the graphics (such as on the two Monorail cars), and touches of wear on the gold line trim...but there is nothing really bad or unusual here for a piece of this age.

A neat piece to add to any collection related to the 1962 Seattle Worlds Fair or a Worlds Fair grouping in general. Also a fun addition for a collection related to the city of Seattle or Washington State in general.

Click for more detail...

1413

Souvenir China Adams My Old KY Home Plate, Bardstown, Stephen Foster Nifty antique or vintage souvenir china piece for My Old Kentucky Home in Bardstown, Kentucky (Kent.), showing the Georgian-style mansion or home at this locale. This house is famous as being the location at which Stephen Collins Foster in 1852 (while visiting his cousins, the Rowan family) wrote the famous song, My Old Kentucky Home, which is the official state song of Ky. The locale is now a Kentucky State Park site. The plate has blue and white coloring in the traditional "flow blue" type blue color (the images may make the coloring seem darker due to camera lighting, but this is a traditional rich medium blue color within the range of blue seen with Flow Blue/Flo Blue plates). Fully marked on the backside as having been made by Adams Potteries for Jonroth (an importer of souvenir pieces) in Staffordshire England, and marked as having been imported specifically for My Old Kentucky Home, Bardstown, KY. From the style and markings, we believe this piece to date to the 1900s teens through 1930s period, although no manufacturer date appears on the piece.

Round plate measuring about 6 7/8 inches in diameter and sitting about 5/8 inch in height. Frontside center picture shows the mansion with trees near it. Above the home to the right is an oval inset line image drawing of Stephen Foster with his signature printed in script, under which his full name is shown, "Stephen Collins Foster". All this is surrounded by a floral motif near the plate edge. At the bottom center appear two lines of words "My Old Kentucky Home, Where Stephen Collins Foster Wrote the Immortal Song". On the backside appears the music notes for the first line of the song with the words underneath, "The Sun Shines Bright in My Old Ken-tuck-y Home". Below this there is a a curve "Old English Staffordshire Ware" within which appears the insignia with crown for "Jonroth England. Under this are the words "Made in Staffordshire, England. By the Adams Potteries. Estd 1657, Imported Exclusively for My Old Kentucky Home. Bardstown, Kentucky." There are light smeared blue diagonal lines from the manufacturer printing process through these words. We've provided 8 images to show different views and close-ups including close-ups of the graphics, location wording and the manufacturer markings. Please note that the white "hot spots" are reflections from the camera lighting on the high gloss surface.

This piece is in very nice condition for it's age, but it's not mint. The plate appears to have never been used and perhaps was just displayed on a shelf, as we see no surface scratches. There is some crazing visible on the topside and underside of the plate. There are pin/pit dots in the glazing. The main flaw is a chip on the underside of the plate near/touching the rim. You don't see this from the topside, but the chip touches the rim on the bottomside. This is an oval chip measuring about 1/4 inch greatest width with about 1/8 inch of the chip along the underside rim. There is depth to the chip, it is not just a slight surface chip on the backside. Looking at the front of the plate on display you would not know it is there and the plate looks terrific, but you need to know that this is there.

A great addition to any collection of vintage souvenir memorabilia related to Kentucky in general, the city of Bardstown, My Old Kentucky Home, or a collection related to Kentucky State Parks, local history or tourist attractions. Would also make a great gift for someone interested in music, popular or traditional songs, or composers in general, or Stephen Foster in specific. Would be a nice piece for adding to a general collection of antique Jonroth China or Adams China pieces.

Click for more detail...

1415

Souvenir China Adams Jonroth Barbara Fritchie Home House, Frederick MD Nifty antique or vintage souvenir china piece for Barbara Fritchie's Home or The Barbara Fritchie House & Museum in Frederick, Maryland, showing an outdoor view of the house. The plate has blue and white coloring in the traditional "flow blue" type blue color (the images may make the coloring seem darker due to camera lighting, but this is a traditional rich medium blue color within the range of blue seen with Flow Blue/Flo Blue plates). Fully marked on the backside as having been made by Adams Potteries for Jonroth (an importer of souvenir pieces) in Staffordshire England, and marked as having been imported specifically for The Barbara Fritchie House & Museum. From the style and markings, we believe this piece to date to the 1900s teens through 1930s period, although no manufacturer date appears on the piece.

From a little research, Barbara Fritchie (whose name has also been spelled Barbara Frietchie and Barbara Frietschie) was made famous in a patriotic 1864 poem by John Greenleaf Whittier titled Barbara Frietchie, and an 1899 play with the same name by Clyde Fitch. She was a real woman who lived from 1766 to 1862, lived the later part of her life in Frederick, MD and was a Unionist during the Civil War. The poem focuses on a story which made her a legendary American hero, by waving the American flag (Stars and Stripes) from an upper window in her home in defiance of Stonewall Jackson and his Confederate troops as they marched by. Apparently when Winston Churchill passed through Federick in 1943 he stopped at the house and recited the poem. The location was a privately owned museum which used to be open to the public, but an internet listing stated that it is now closed.

Round plate measuring about 6 7/8 inches in diameter and sitting about 5/8 inch in height. Frontside center picture shows the house and nearby building. This is surrounded by a floral motif near the plate edge. At the bottom center appear the words "Barbara Fritchie's Home, Frederick, MD." On the backside is quoted several lines from John Greenleaf Whittier's poem. The poem title appears, Barbara Fritchie, and then a scroll with the lines "Up rose old Barbara Fritchie then. Bowed with her fourscore years and ten; Bravest of all in Frederick town, She took up the flag the men hauled down: "Shoot, if you must, this old gray head, But spare your country's flag", she said." Below this there is a a curve "Old English Staffordshire Ware" within which appears the insignia with crown for "Jonroth England". Under this are the words "Made by the Adams Potteries. Est 1657, Staffordshire England, Imported for The Barbara Fritchie House & Museum, Frederick, MD." We've provided 6 images to show different views and close-ups including close-ups of the graphic, location wording and the manufacturer markings. Please note that the white "hot spots" are reflections from the camera lighting on the high gloss surface.

This piece is in wonderful condition for it's age, with nothing major wrong with it. The topside of the plate does have some small surface scratches but nothing bad and you only see these when looking at the plate very closely when held at an angle in bright light. To us, we don't think it was ever used but perhaps was just displayed on a shelf. There are pin/pit dots in the glazing. We don't see any crazing on the topside and only a few crazing lines on the underside. There are no chips, cracks, etc. A terrific looking piece.

A great addition to any collection of vintage souvenir memorabilia related to Maryland in general, the city of Frederick or a collection related to local history or tourist attractions. Would also make a great gift for someone interested in the poetry of John Greenleaf Whittier, legendary American heroes, famous American women historical figures, Barbara Fritchie in particular or perhaps someone interested in Civil War stories and history. Would be a nice piece for adding to a general collection of antique Jonroth China or Adams China pieces.

2099

Vintage Advertising Plate Horse Singleton's Shoes Store Lancaster PA Neat vintage find out of a home. This is an advertising or souvenir piece for a retail store in Lancaster, PA (a big tourist destination in Pennsylvania due to the Amish farms and Amish influence in the area).

Small round china plate (this is not porcelain as it is not translucent) with lowered mid-section and upward flared rim with scalloped edge. Measures 6 1/16 inches width and stands 3/4 inch in height, bread & butter plate size. Large center graphic of a chestnut colored or brown horse head with riding bit & reins. At the bottom in dark gold is stamped "Singleton's Shoes" with their address, "32 N. Queen St. Lancaster, PA." Plate weighs 4 ounces unpacked and will be shipped in a box for safety.

We've provided 7 images to show detail. As you can see in one image the backside is blank white, so we don't know who manufactured this souvenir china piece for Singleton Shoe Store. We've shot images both with and without the camera light since the bright light sometimes "blands out" some of the detail (although images without the light appear dark). Please use the zoom feature to examine closely.

Very nice vintage advertising china piece, with clear store labeling (gold shows a touch of minor wear but very readable), and very nice horse graphic (fully there & good shape). The plate does show age and wear, however, with lots of crazing on both sides (much more on top than bottom) and two small chips on the underside along the rim. These are mostly only visible from the bottom, so no problem for display, but we've included 2 images in two lightings so you can see them. We believe this plate may have once had gold line trim along the outer top edge as we can see some traces of this, but this gold is long gone (less than 10% remains). Other minor expected wear, age wear, storage wear.

Fun addition to any collection of souvenir china or advertising collectibles related to Penna. in general or Lancaster City or County in specific. Would also make a great addition to any horse related grouping.

2075

Vintage PA Harrisburg State Capitol Bldg Souvenir China Jonroth Plate Nifty piece of vintage souvenir china for architecture or a government building in Pennsylvania which came out of a home. This is a small plate, small dessert plate size, showing the Penna. State Capitol in Harrisburg.

From some internet research, this beautiful building began construction in 1902 and was completed in 1906. It was designed in Beaux-Arts style by architect Joseph Miller Huston. It is the seat of government for Penn., housing the two legislative assemblies (House of Representatives & Senate), judicial chambers (for the Supreme & Superior Courts of PA), and the offices of the Governor & Lieutenant Governor.

We believe this souvenir item was made in the 1920's or 1930's from the markings on the backside, in particular the "Germany" country of origin marking below an artist palette. The Germany inclusion dates this piece pre WWII (pre WW2, WW II). On/near the painters palette it states "Hand Painted, The Jonroth Studios" (we believe this Jonroth mark also dates this piece to the first half of the 1900's, but don't know that for certain). Under this in a slanted rectangle or parallelogram it states "Imported and Painted for Chas. Krauss, Harrisburg, PA." Charles Krauss & Co. was a fine jewelry store located in the city at 411 Market Street, from a 1915 Harrisburg Daily Independent newspaper ad we located on the internet. It was common for these stores to also sell collectibles.

The old round plate has upward curved sides for a diameter of about 6 3/16 inches and sits about 3/4 inch in height. This piece is china or porcelain (it is translucent), and has a transfer design for the building, graphics & words, with hand coloring. There are raised white dots on some of the trees which you can feel, which we think are meant to be some snow or just some white highlighting since there are also a few smaller raised white dots and some raised white lines on the building itself, so they are intentional. Perhaps this was meant to be an early spring scene. Along the bottom of the piece it states "Pennsylvania's State Capitol, Harrisburg, PA."

We've provided 8 images, showing both sides, from differing angles and close-ups. Please note that the camera light causes white "hot spot" reflections, which you can see in different places across the images. Please use the zoom feature to examine closely. This piece weighs almost 5 ounces unpacked.

Very nice overall condition, with no chips, cracks or crazing, but this does have age wear likely from handling and cleaning, not bad nor noticeable on display, but there. We see a a number of scratches and dot scratches/marks on the top side of varying sizes, depths and noticeability (we had to examine very closely at an angle in bright light to see much of this). Among these are one on the left side of the building and below it about 3/4 inch length and at least three others ranging from 1/8 to 3/4 inch length in the brown to the right of the words on the bottom. There are other scratches but most of these are hidden by the intricate design/graphics/coloring. The coloring is still vibrant with clear graphics. The gold line top edge trim is largely there with only a touch of wear, but it does not exactly meet the colored edge of the graphics in all places as made, so you can see white between the graphics and this gold line. As made in manufacture and expected with souvenir pieces, there are pin/pit dots in the pottery, stray black & brown dots and small lines from the transferring, etc.. There are other minor touches of aging via darkening on the base rim on which this sits, etc.

A fun piece to add to any collection of Pennsylvania souvenirs, a collection related to buildings & architecture, historical pieces from Harrisburg or related to PA government, etc.

2042

Atlantic City NJ Boardwalk Souvenir China Flogel Bros W Initial Dish Fun find out of a home. This is a vintage souvenir from the boardwalk in Atlantic City, New Jersey. A china or porcelain piece (it is translucent) with a topside curved handle for ease in carrying. We've seen these referred to as a Nappy Dish, Candy Dish or Lemon Dish, but it could be used for serving any small item.

A small round dish measuring about 6 3/16 inches in diameter and sitting about 1 1/2 inches in height to the top tip of the elegantly curved handle. White porcelain with a simple gold edge design and gold paint on the handle, with a center gold capital "W" ("W" initial) done in old English (Olde English) lettering. While we are pretty certain this was meant to be a capital "W", if you turned this dish around you might get away with calling this a capital "M" (if you are looking for a "M" initial because your name begins with "M"), but internet research suggests that old English "Ms" are done a bit differently and that this was most likely meant to be a "W". This vintage souvenir china piece weighs 6 1/2 ounces unpacked.

There are two sets of markings on the backside. The base white china piece was made in Japan, with a blue stamp saying this. While only the Japan can be read clearly, you can see the hint of a blue line that was meant to show above this, which we think would have said "Made in", but we think the stamp was applied in an incomplete fashion. Above this mark in red is the stamp done in an oval for the company which did the gold decoration. This states "Flogel Bros. Decorating Co. Atlantic - City, N.J." (Flogel Brothers Decorating Company) with the word "Boardwalk" in the center (the "c" in "Decorating" is not fully there, but you can tell this is what is meant). This indicates that this piece is a souvenir china piece from the Atlantic City Boardwalk. From the style and Japan marking we would guess this dates to the 1950s or 1960s, so this is a Mid Century Modern piece.

We've provided 8 images to show from differing angles. Please note that the camera lighting causes white "hot spot" reflections on the glossy surfaces and in some cases made it difficult to see the detail due to these reflections. So we've also included several images shot without the camera light (these appear darker than the piece does in person, but can show some of the detail better). Please use the zoom feature to examine closely.

Excellent overall condition with no chips, cracks or crazing and just a bit of expected age/use wear. There are some scratches on the topside surface which you can see when holding the piece at an angle in bright light but nothing bad. There is a touch of wear to the gold paint on the handle with some very slight surface wear/rubbing on the "W" and the top trim, but again all this is not bad. A bit of expected wear to the underside rim on which this sits (a few very, very tiny indents/low chips and some pin/pit dots on this rim, nothing bad at all).

A neat gift for anyone whose name begins with "W", particularly if they are interested in or collect souvenirs related to Atlantic City, NJ or the Atlantic City Boardwalk.

1243

Souvenir China Mug Washington's Headquarters Valley Forge PA Adams Nifty antique collectible souvenir china mug in red and white with image of Washington's Headquarters in Valley Forge, PA from Valley Forge National Park. Made by Adams Potteries for Jonroth (an importer of souvenir pieces) in Staffordshire, England. This piece is china, ceramic or pottery; it is not porcelain as it is not translucent. Measures 4 1/4 inches in height, about 4 1/2 inches in greatest width (from outside of handle to opposite end of mug), and about 3 9/16 inches in depth. We don't know the age of this vintage piece, but we guesstimate that it could date to the 1920s or 1930s from the style.

Neat, clean white pottery with transfer image in red of George Washington's head quarters in Valley Forge during the Revolutionary War on both sides of the mug, with an upper rim border of floral and geometric trim. There is a red line decor on the squarish, angular handle. Shape of the mug is largely round with fluting...it is not a circle but has a wavy, fluted feel to the top and bottom edges and overall body of the mug as molded. At the bottom of the image on both sides are printed the words, "Washington's Headquarters, 1777-78 Valley Forge, PA" (Pa, Pennsylvania, Penn., Penna.). The old mug is fully marked on the underside base with, "Old English Staffordshire Ware, Jonroth, England" with the Jonroth crown insignia, and under this, "Made in Staffordshire England by the Adams Potteries established in 1657." There is also a transfer "E" in black that is partially visible on the underside. We have provided six images showing from different sides including close-ups and the manufacturer marking.

Excellent condition, with no chips, cracks or crazing. There are a few stray scratches or rubbed marks but nothing major and nothing to worry about. As manufactured, there are some stray transfer red dots, pin & pit dots, tiny dark dots, etc., but nothing bad or unexpected. There is one spot along the rim which has some very tiny dark dots and perhaps a touch of glaze wear, but nothing bad at all (no chips, we're looking very, very close to find this). And two spots on the sides near the rim where there is a touch of wear to the red transfer, but this may be incomplete transferring as it was made, we don't know, this doesn't look worn to us. This mug is very clean and good-looking, looking to us as if it was never used but just sat on a shelf on display. There is expected wear/darkening to the underside base from age sitting.

A lovely piece to add to any collection of souvenir china relating to Valley Forge, Valley Forge National Park, George Washington at Valley Forge or items related to the Revolutionary War in America overall. Also a nice addition to any collection of Jonroth Studios or Adams Potteries pieces. Could make an interesting gift for anyone interested in national park collectibles or memorabilia or items related to President George Washington or this period in history.

1920

Philadelphia Zoo Souvenir China Small Dish in Stand PA Camel Zebra Neat vintage souvenir china piece for the Philadelphia Zoo in Pennsylvania. Great to have found this in its original metal stand which makes it particularly fun on display. This old china piece is porcelain (it is translucent) and is the size of a butter dish, inserted into a wire metal stand with an ornate curlicue curved edging and an adjustable rectangular wire stand piece which folds flat so you could hang this on a wall in addition to standing it in a display cupboard.

Basically round, old souvenir china piece in stand measures about 3 11/16 inches greatest width and stands up to 3 3/4 inches in height when you adjust the stand to show this as tall as possible. In our images we've shown this with the stand putting the china dish at a better lower angle for photographs, with the full piece standing at its lowest height of about 2 1/2 inches (frankly, we think this is the safest height/set-up for display; while you can make this stand taller it seems a more fragile/precarious way to display this and we are afraid it could fall over). You can take the china dish out of the stand by lifting a circular piece on the backside but we have not attempted to do this because we didn't want to risk bending the metal or perhaps chipping the dish in the process. The china dish can rotate/move within the frame, so it may become rotated during the shipping process, but if it does, you can easily move it to where you want without taking the dish out of the frame. The china piece itself has a scalloped edge and a lowered center section.

Terrific old graphic look on the front side with iridescent coloring to the china around the edges and a multi-color two picture look separated by the banner which states "Philadelphia Zoo". Above the banner is a picture of a Bactrian Camel (as labelled) with a similar picture of a Zebra below the banner (as labelled). The images/décor are all lined in black with coloring added within and around that. The backside has the original paper foil label stating "A Quality Product Made in Japan". From this and the coloring and style of the piece, we believe this Philadelphia Zoo souvenir would have been made in the 1950s or 1960s, although we can't guarantee that. It is definitely not a new or current zoo souvenir piece.

We've provided 8 images to show from all sides and close-ups of the graphics and the paper label. The camera lighting creates white "hot spot" reflections on the china and particularly on the shiny foil label, so we shot the label both with and without the camera light on. Please use the zoom feature to examine closely.

Very nice usable and collectible condition. There are no major chips, cracks or crazing to the china, or bends to the frame. As you can see in the images, there are some tiny chips on the backside of the china on the edge on which the piece would sit if it were lying flat, but these could have been made in manufacture since these souvenir pieces were cheaply made. There do not appear to be any chips around the outer edge of the china piece. We don't see any scratches on the topside, but there are a few dots, a brown wear dot/stain, and other tiny wear, but nothing bad. The black line scroll work surrounding the colored center images does not have bold black lines but more a worn old black line look, but we're not sure that this is paint wear but perhaps a design feature to make this piece have an older aged look as made, or perhaps again this is an example of the cheaper manufacturing process, we don't know. The foil paper label has a bit of wear, but not bad.

Nice addition to any collection of vintage zoo souvenir items, or one related to the Philadelphia Zoo or the city of Philadelphia or PA in specific. Would also make an interesting addition to a grouping of collectibles related to camels or zebras.

1899

Antique Maestricht Souvenir Plate Holland Netherlands 3 Dutch Girls Gorgeous antique plate which came out of a home, believed to be an international souvenir item from Holland in The Netherlands. This is a ceramic, earthenware or pottery plate (it is not china or translucent porcelain) using a white base pottery color with multi-colored décor. It is marked on the backside as made by "Societe Ceramique Maestricht", along with "Made in Holland" and "Mooi Nederland", with the last translating to "Beautiful Netherlands". On the front side of the plate it is marked "Holland" and "Jeugdige Buurtjes", with the last translating to "Youthful Neighborhoods".

The topside central décor shows 3 girls in Dutch or Holland dress wearing traditional caps, wooden clogs and aprons. They are standing by a canal with wood structures near/across it and two houses nearby. Surrounding this is an intricate geometric design having curlicues and flowers with leaves. This is an old transferware plate (transfer ware plate) with hand coloring as is common for these antique pieces, using black outlining for the design and picture, then painting red, blue, green, brown, yellow and a skin pink for detailing and highlighting. You can see where the outer border transfer design does not line up/match up completely in one spot as made, likely where the design began and ended as it was transferring. The vintage souvenir plate has a red circular line edging with a second red circular line around the inner central scene. The detail is excellent, even including some white laundry drying on an outside line near the houses. On the backside there are two holes in the ceramic for adding a string or wire for hanging on a wall.

Societe Ceramique was a company based in Maestricht, Holland which produced ceramics. This Societe Ceramique Maestricht circular mark containing a lion at its center and Made in Holland designation on the backside is believed to date this piece to having been made in the 1890s to early 1900s. Round plate with lower center section and angled sides, measuring about 9 1/8 inches in diameter. We've provided 8 images to show all details, front and back sides, with a close-up of the mark. Please use the zoom feature to examine closely and note that the camera lighting creates white "hot spot" reflections on the smooth surfaces. This is a heavy pottery plate, weighing just over one pound without packing.

Wonderful old condition, with no chips, cracks, or crazing. We can see a few top side scratches (nothing bad) and think this was a display plate, not used for eating, with the scratches due to handling, storage, cleaning, etc. There is a whiteish spot (about 1/2 inch long) on the border design on the right side near where the girls are shown, where some of the border transfer has worn away to white. We don't know if this is age/wear or whether this plate was made/sold with an incomplete transfer. There is also a curved sideways "S" area of transfer ware or transfer miss in the border area near the bottom of the plate and some other touches of transfer ware. If these are a bit of wear, this is to be expected with a plate of this age, which we think has survived really well and don't think would be a problem on display. On the backside there is some black dot smearing from the application of the manufacturer markings, as made.

A nifty find which would be eye-catching as part of a room décor. Would also make a great addition to any collection related to Holland or the Netherlands, as well as one related to Societe Ceramique pottery in particular.

1810

2 Germany Souvenir China Philadelphia, PA Independence Hall, City Hall Fun vintage souvenir china find commemorating locations in Philadelphia, PA. A pair of small china vases, matching except for differing buildings or locations shown as the pictures on the front sides. Marked on both underside bases via black stamped "Made in Germany". We believe these were made pre-WW II (pre World War II, prior to the second World War) or circa 1920s-1930s based on the marks, style and lustre decoration on the china. One vase is marked and shows a view of "City Hall, Philadelphia, Pa." while the other is marked and shows "Independence Hall, Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA."

Both vases stand about 5 inches tall, with a greatest width to the outwardly curved handles of about 3 1/4 inches. They are "flattened ovals" in shape, only having a depth to the main body and oval bases of about 1 1/2 inches. The oval picture area on the front sides is multi-colored, using blue, dark and light reddish orange and browns, with the actual drawing a black line drawing of the buildings/scenes and black for the location names below the pictures. The pictures and words are a transfer (you can see the dots); we are not sure if the coloring is hand done or not (we don't see dots here like we do for the black areas/design). On the front sides there is also a light green lustre paint at the top of the vases above the necks and along the bases, also having some gold line and gold dot décor. All this décor is only on the front side of the vases, with the back sides and both left/right sides just white china. These vases are porcelain, as they are translucent.

We've provided 8 images to try and show these vintage souvenir pieces from all sides with close-ups of the building/location pictures. These have been shot both with and without camera lighting, as the lighting tends to change the color somewhat (while making it easier for you to see condition and detail) and create white "hot spots" on the reflective surfaces. Please use the close-up feature to see all the detail.

These old souvenir vases are in very nice overall condition and in very nice collectible condition, but are not mint. On the City Hall vase, there is a tiny chip along the front top edge at the upwards point, with the gold line missing here, measuring about 1/8th inch in width. This vase also has a tiny flake on the front side bottom rim in the green lustre, measuring about 1/16th inch in width. We do not see any chips or flakes on the Independence Hall vase. With both vases they do show evidence of age wear via some scratches and scuffed/scuffed white/lighter paint areas on the building pictures (more so on the City Hall vase than the Independence Hall one), on the white areas there are surface scratches and pin, pit, brown & dark dots, some gold paint wear, age wear on the bisque/unglazed underside bases on which these pieces sit, etc. The green lustre paint on both pieces was not applied evenly throughout as manufactured, so there are visible areas that are less glazed and/or unglazed (this is also true on the white china on the Independence Hall vase). These souvenir china pieces, like many of the period, were not made as "fine china", having been more cheaply made, leading to the condition seen here which was common for these pieces. Please use the close-up feature to fully see the condition.

Still nifty antique pieces to add to any souvenir collection related to Pennsylvania in general or Philadelphia in particular. Would also make an interesting addition to a collection related to famous buildings or historical buildings or locations, particularly related to early American history.

1322

Souvenir China Old Germany Waterfalls Creamer Pitcher Niagra Falls NY Lovely small pitcher or creamer with a central multi-colored transfer graphic of a large waterfall with two boats near it. While it is not labelled to be a scenic souvenir china piece from Niagra Falls, that is what we believe this to be due to the size of the falls shown (which look like the American side or American Falls of Niagra Falls in New York State), the two boats in front of the falls (like the boats which tour near Niagra Falls such as the Maid of the Mist), and the "Made in Germany" marking on the underside base. Many old souvenir pieces from places like Niagra Falls had this kind of marking and were imported from European manufacturers. Surrounding the central waterfall graphic is an ornate design in gold paint, with this also repeated near the top rim, with a gold design on the backside and gold line trim on the top rim and at the topside of the handle. We do not know the age of this piece, but from the Made in Germany marking and piece style, we are guessing it dates back to the 1920s-1940s period pre-World War II.

Measures about 3 1/4 inches in height, 3 1/2 inches in width and 2 1/4 inches in depth or the diameter of the round base. The base material for this piece is a white china or porcelain (this piece is translucent). We've provided 6 images including close-ups of the graphic and the country of origin marking. Please note that the white "hot spots" are lighting reflections from the camera on the glossy surface, and that this lighting "blands out" the piece a bit...the coloring looks richer, darker, more attractive in person than in the images. There is also an impressed number 3 on the underside base.

Wonderful overall condition with no chips, cracks or crazing. There are minor age/wear flaws so this piece is not mint, but nothing major that detracts from its great appearance. There is some wear to the gold line trim and design areas (nothing really bad, but it is there), pin/pit/dark dots/transfer dots made in manufacture, some slight surface scratches (nothing bad here), a stray curved blue line under the front graphic area (this could be pen ink that might be removable we don't know, but are selling this as is/as found), a small circular brown spot on the interior base with a few other dark tiny dots (otherwide the inside is clean, this doesn't look like it was used for serving anything), other slight general age/wear, a little bit of wear to the underside base rim on which the piece sits (which supports age).

A neat piece to add to a collection of souvenir pieces or memorabilia related to Niagra Falls, NY or waterfalls in general. Also a nice piece to add to any collection relating to waterfalls of any type or a small general creamer collection. Please note that we also have listed for sale another marked Niagra Falls souvenir piece, a Hazel Atlas souvenir glass mug; please see our other listings. Click for more detail...

1331

Wedgwood China Piccadilly Circus London Plate Christmas 1982 Lovely plate made as the third issue in Wedgwood China's series of Queen's Ware Christmas Plates featuring paintings by Alan Price. This is marked and distributed as the Christmas plate for 1982 with a central decor featuring Piccadilly Circus in London, England. The design shows the Eros statue in Piccadilly Circus (which is in London's West End) with nearby buildings which the description on the backside says are on Piccadilly and Regent Street. Under the design on the front is marked "Christmas 1982" with the nearby words "Piccadilly Circus London". The backside has a description of the plate, mentions it is part of the "Alan Price Collectors' Edition" and shows the Wedgwood of Etruria & Barlaston logo with Made in England. Surrounding the lowered central decor on the frontside are holly leaves and holly berries before a scalloped rim trimmed in red.

A small round plate, dessert plate size with a diameter of about 8 5/16 inches and sitting 3/4 inch in height. This plate is china or bone china but not porcelain (it is not translucent). We've provided 7 images including close-ups of the central design, the markings on the front and back sides and the descriptive copy on the backside. Please note that the white "hot spots" are lighting reflection from the camera on the glossy surfaces. Also, the image of the full front side of the plate was not shot "head on" since that created a lighting reflection in the center of the plate, so this image looks somewhat "shortened" or narrower than the plate is in person.

Wonderful condition, with no chips, cracks or crazing. There is nothing major wrong at all. If you look ultra closely in very bright light at an angle you may see some very slight surface wear on the topside, but only as some occassional dots or tiny spots and very hard to find. On the backside there are two unglazed spots which look made in manufacture and perhaps some other slight wear but nothing here to worry about.

A great piece to add to any Wedgwood china collection or a collection relating to London, England or the United Kingdom and it's neat locales. Would also make a nice gift for someone travelling to or coming from that country.

Click for more detail...

1342

Wedgwood China University of Delaware Plate of Memorial Library Very nice college plate made by Wedgwood, England. This is likely from a set of plates made to show buildings at the University of Delaware, likely from the main campus in Newark, DE. The plate is white or ivory colored china or ceramic (it is not porcelain as it is not translucent) with a raised rayed line pattern surrounding the central graphic on the lowered center portion. Beyond the line pattern is a raised ridge having a two leaf "V" design prior to the round outer edge. The central building graphic is of the front columned entrance of the Memorial Library on campus, with a tree directly opposite, all done in an engraved type picture in a darker, medium red to maroon red color (it is not a bright red). The plate is fully marked on the backside with "Memorial Library, University of Delaware." under which appears two circular marks. On the left is the Wedgwood of Etruria & Barlaston, Made in England insignia. On the right is the insignia of the company which imported the plate for sale, marked "Sole Importers, Jones McDuffee & Stratton Co., Boston" with a lion holding up a ball or globe in its paw at the center of the circular mark.

The antique round plate measures just under 10 1/2 inches in diameter and sits about 3/4 inch in height. We've provided 5 images to show close-ups of the building graphic and the backside markings. Please note that the white "hot spots" are reflections from the camera lighting on the high gloss surface. We shot the plate at an angle since head-on the camera lighting reflection marred view of the central image too much. This creates a shadow which looks like a bit of darkening at the lower part of the curve under the building picture...rest assured there is no dirt or darkening here, that is a shadow. The plate weighs about 1 1/2 pounds unpacked, so this would ship via U.S.P.S. Priority Mail within the U.S. We are not certain of the age of this vintage plate, but guess that it may have been made in the 1950's or 1960's from other similar pieces we've seen.

While in very nice, very usuable and displayable condition, this piece is not mint. There are no chips or cracks, but the plate is very crazed, not quite all-over crazing but well on its way to that. On the topside there are black pin dots and some black pin dot wear and other slight dark wear on the raised surface, particularly on the outermost raised rim prior to the plate edge. This is not bad but you will see it when you go looking. It looks to us as if something else might have been stored sitting on top of this plate in a closet over the years causing a bit of surface wear (this is not anything you would likely notice hanging on a wall on display or just sitting on a table awaiting use). There are a few very light topside surface scratches or rubbed marks, but nothing bad, and you need to look closely at an angle in bright light to see these. There is a touch of light brown staining among the tree and its limbs and leaves, nothing bad and very hard to see in certain light, but we looked very closely. On the backside there is also a bit of light staining in the center as well as a more noticeable small brown circular stain. The backside has a touch of other age/expected wear, nothing unusual. Overall, this piece has aged well.

A neat older piece which will draw attention on display or hanging on a wall. Would certainly be a great addition for use in a set of these dishes relating to U Delaware. Would make a a great present for anyone who graduated from this terrific university, or currently works or attends there. Could also be a nice addition to a general collection of memorabilia related to Delaware, the First State.
