17014

Bauer Cinnamon Brown Ring Ware Mixing Bowl Number 18 This 1930s Bauer Ringware pottery mixing bowl is a reddish cinnamon brown color. It's the number 18 bowl, 8-1/4 inches diameter by 4" deep. It has an impressed mark "18" on the bottom. Guaranteed authentic old Bauer - the new Bauer bowls have raised marks and no size or mold line numbers. I've priced the bowl quite low for someone who needs it to complete a set or only wants it for display, due to the fact there's a tight hairline rim crack (last photo). Otherwise the bowl displays wonderfully, still glossy with no nicks, chips, or utensil marks.

Mid Century Modern Sascha Brastoff Blue Star Steed 3 Leg Dish This Mid Century Modern Sascha Brastoff California pottery biomorphic 3-legged dish or shallow bowl has the iconic Star Steed horse on a teal blue background. It's fish shaped, 8-1/2 by 9-1/2 inches, and stands 2-1/2" high. The hand painted design is signed Sascha B. The back side is marked Compliments of Hiram Walker along with the rooster mark - apparently this was a premium or commemorative piece for the distillery's 100th anniversary in 1958. The bowl is in excellent condition with no damage or decoration wear.

6314-2

Winfield China Dragon Flower 3 Section Large Leaf Relish Dish This large leaf shape 3-section handled relish serving tray is in the 1940s hand painted Dragon Flower pattern by Winfield China of California. It has a delicate pink, tan, and brown Oriental floral design on a cream background with brown edge trim.

The dish is a big 16 inches long by 9-1/2 inches wide. The gracefully curved handle at the top end rises 2-1/2 inches from the bottom of the tray. It's in still glossy, excellent condition with no damage or scratches. The unglazed bottom has two faint initials or marks made by the previous owner, plus the blue Winfield Hand Crafted China backstamp. White spots seen at the rim in the photos are just reflections. Perfect as a table centerpiece.

Click here to enlarge image and see more about item 6049: Bauer 1950s Pink Speckled Covered Casserole in Metal Cradle

Click for more detail...

6049

Bauer 1950s Pink Speckled Covered Casserole in Metal Cradle This pink speckled covered casserole with cradle was part of Bauer's Monterey Moderne line from the 1950s (sometimes spelled Monterrey). It's 7-3/4" diameter by 3" deep (the bowl only, not including the cradle or height of the lid). The underside has the impressed Bauer mark and both the casserole and matching lid are in perfect condition with no damage or wear.
The retro goldtone shiny brass cradle stands on three wire tripod legs and has coiled wire double side handles. The cutwork sides have a curvy scroll design that I would describe as organic in a Mid Century Modern way. The cradle still shines and is in great condition with only very minor finish rub wear to the handle extensions.

15048

Maddux California Pair Swan Planter Figurines My aunt had a pair of these graceful Maddux of California swans in her bathroom when I was a child. Both of hers were black. She had filled one with little pink guest soaps, the other with rolled washcloths. Made in the 1950s, I have one black swan and one white, both with pink highlights. They're about 11 inches high.

The black swan once held water or soil, there's a light sediment line inside. The white swan interior has no sediment or traces of soil. The black swan has a glazed and painted-over nick to the underside of the beak, done during manufacture and visible only when viewed head-on at eye level. There are no chips, hairlines, or crazing. White spots in the photos are reflections.

16736

Twin Winton Squirrel Cookie Jar This cute Twin Winton happy squirrel pottery cookie jar was made in San Juan Capistrano California in the 1950s. It has brown woodgrain finish and measures 10-3/4 inches high by about 9 inches wide from front to back. There are some faint pindot white specks to the finish, I believe from general age and cleaning. The only other issues are a craze mark in the bottom back of the jar and a tiny nick under the rim opening behind the squirrel's left ear, both shown in the next to last picture.

15471

Treasure Craft Lucky Sprite Pixie Elf Log Boat Planter Treasure Craft of California produced their 1950s Lucky Sprite pixie planters and other decorative items in a wide variety of designs, but this clever little planter is one I haven't seen before. The pixie sits cross legged on the back of a dark green log or plant stem boat with a large leaf in the front serving as a sail. A small cured leaf at the back is the rudder. It's 6 inches long by 4-1/2" high. The planter is in excellent condition with no chips, flakes, fleabites, or other issues. The foil label is missing, but you can identify Treasure Craft pixies by the realistically outlined detail of the ears.

11683

Gilner Pixies Maroon Pottery Salt Pepper Shakers A pair of scarce upright pixie salt and pepper shakers, made by Gilner Pottery of California in the early 1950s. The salt shaker is a girl and the pepper is a boy - her features are painted a little lighter. I don't know if that was intentional or not. They're about 4-1/2 inches tall and have no damage or crazing. Stoppers are not present. The shaker holes are not very prominent so you can display them as figurines with your pixie collection.

16829

Maddux of California 1950s Black Rooster Figural Planter I wonder what the deal was with chicken decor in the 1950s? Chicken figurines, wall decor, dinnerware, all types of kitchen accessories, and even curtains. Here's a delightful take on the Mid Century chicken obsession: a friendly looking, long necked black crowing rooster ceramic planter from Maddux of California, whose owner, William Maddux, specialized in art pottery birds of all types.

The planter is 12-3/4 inches high to the top of the white comb by about 5-1/2" wide overall. Other than some minor water sediment inside the ringed planter bowl, it's in excellent condition with no damage.

15532

Treasure Craft Pair Pixie Elf Leaf Dishes These two 1950s leaf dishes are part of the Lucky Sprite pixie collection by Treasure Craft of California. I'm not sure if they were marketed as candy dishes or ashtrays, but there are no stains or other signs they were used as ashtrays. They're about 5 inches long by 3 inches wide and high. Each has a pottery clay pixie figure, or Lucky Sprite as Treasure Craft called them, sitting on the back edge of the leaf with legs crossed. The dish on the right in the first photo has a chip under the leaf edge, below where the pixie sits. There is also a tiny fleabite to the back edge his leaf hat, not visible from the front. The other pixie dish has no damage.

The 3-1/2 inch clock movement was made in the USA by Sessions; the clock itself was made by Newell Studios of California in 1967.

The clock runs well and the 4 foot white cord and plug are in excellent condition with no issues (though the plug has the old fashioned non-polarized prongs). The clock has no chips, flakes, or damage of any kind, just some mild crazing to the high gloss glaze.

Click here to enlarge image and see more about item 17001: Mid Century Modern Harlequins Ceramic Wall Plate

Click for more detail...

17001

Mid Century Modern Harlequins Ceramic Wall Plate I'm almost certain this Mid Century Modern ceramic wall plate was an early piece or prototype from either Marc Bellaire or Sascha Brastoff, or done by someone who was amazingly good at imitating their unique style (Bellaire was employed by Brastoff before branching out on his own). There are numerous different ashtrays out there with this same dancing twin Harlequins decoration, all attributed to one or the other, but none signed.

The 11 inch plate has an irregular scalloped border with sponged gold. The airbrushed background is speckled off-white and black with a pale purple halo below the border. The slender masked dancers are lavishly decorated in gold with accents of purple and turquoise. There are two or three craze lines to the glossy glaze, but no chips or damage.

Treasure Craft Pixie Elf Water Pump Log Planter This 1950s figural ceramic planter was made by Treasure Craft of California as part of their Lucky Sprite pixie elf collection. The pixie figure is perched at the end of the log water trough, with an old fashioned water pump at the other end. The planter measures 8 inches wide including the pump handle by a little over 4 inches high. The sprite has a tiny speck of green paint on one cheek from manufacture, otherwise it's in very good vintage condition with no damage.

Hand Painted Forget Me Nots Divided Pottery Tray Dish This vintage 3-section divided tray or dish has hand painted sprays of blue forget-me-not flowers on matte pastel mint green with curvy ruffled edges and an ornate center handle. It measures 9 inches square. There are no labels or maker's marks but it's a quality piece, not home ceramics. My guess is a 1930s - 1940s California ceramics studio. In excellent condition with no damage or paint loss.

Circa: 1940
Country of Origin: US
Manufacturer: Unsigned California Pottery
