16287

Tell City Chair Company Copper and Maple Bun Warmer A scarce vintage dining accessory made by the famous Tell City Chair Company, this maple and copper piece is a bun warmer for serving hot rolls or biscuits. The hand wrought copper lid opens and closes with the thumb release above the wooden handle to keep the bread warm. The bun warmer is about 13 inches long including the handle by 7" wide by 4-1/2" high at the back.

The hammered copper top has a warm brown patina. There are some light scuffs and scratches to the wood finish at the back and interior front, all of which are evident in the photos. The next to last picture shows a thin scrape to the wood at one corner where the copper lid attaches. The original paper label that was on the bottom is gone now but it would have been marked Pattern 3104, #48 Andover finish, Tell City Chair Co. Tell City Indiana. The bun warmer is often mistaken for a coal scuttle, but the last photo is from a 1950s company lamps & decorative accessories brochure showing it is indeed a hard rock maple bun warmer (left column center).

There are no markings indicating maker or origin, just some foreign numbers and symbols written on the back.

16085

Jennings Brothers Bronze Desk Set With Perpetual Calendar This early 1900s cast bronze desk set by Jennings Brothers is a transitional Art Nouveau to Arts and Crafts design. Included are an inkwell, a blotter, a perpetual desk calendar, and a blotter with bronze corner decoration.

The calendar has 6 celluloid month inserts (2 months on each, so all are present). There are six month inserts - there should be 7 but the one for months beginning on a Sunday is missing. The inserts all bear a copyright date of 1893. The bronze frame is marked on back JB 3215.

The 3 by 4 inch inkwell has a milk glass insert in pristine condition with no chips or damage. The handheld ink blotter still has its blue blotter paper. All three desk pieces are in excellent condition with no issues.

The 12 by 19 inch desktop blotter is backed in dark green moiré silk which is still in good condition aside from expected minor fraying and wear at the exterior edge folds. The thick pink blotter paper is still present, those somewhat faded and worn. The bronze corners are all firmly attached.

Click for more detail...

5694-3

Hand Tooled Copper Over Glass Liqueur or Cordial Set on Tray This unusual vintage copper cordial, aperitif, or liqueur beverage set has a pierced and chased flower and leaf decoration reminiscent of Western style leather tooling. There are six copper jacketed small glasses on an oval solid copper tray with reticulated openwork rim.

The glasses are thick and flared at the rim, almost shot glass size. Overall height from base to rim is 3-1/2 inches, diameter across the rims is 1-1/2 inches. The glasses are 2 inches deep and hold one ounce. The tray measures 10-1/2 by 7-1/2 inches.

One glass has a tight hairline at the rim with a nearby rim fleabite (see last photo). The others have no issues. The tray could use some cleaning and has a few shallow dimples due to the softness of the copper, nothing that prevents it or the glasses from sitting flat. The set has a somewhat Southwestern look but there are no maker's marks - probably made in Mexico for the tourist trade.

15521

Embossed Flowers Reticulated Copper Wall Charger This lovely embossed copper wall charger plate has a die-tooled allover fancy floral decoration in the center and a reticulated puffy arched and scalloped rim. It measures 11-3/4 inches diameter and is in excellent condition. Possibly of Persian or Middle Eastern origin, the charger doesn't have any discernible markings. However, the last photo shows a closeup of the back hanger which may have an unreadable signature. Age is unknown but my guess is no later than mid 20th century.

Click here to enlarge image and see more about item 16483: Gregorian Solid Copper Balance Scale Hanging Weight Plates

Click for more detail...

16483

Gregorian Solid Copper Balance Scale Hanging Weight Plates This was quite a rare item from Gregorian Copper, a decorative balance scale or scales of justice with a simple but pretty scrolly center support. Unfortunately the center support and base have become detached, but the solid copper chained weight plates are perfectly useful in just about any scale. I'll include all parts in case the buyer wants to reattach the base. I've successfully used JB weld in the past to repair broken metal parts.

The scale dates to the 1960s. The underside of the base is engraved "Gregorian Copper 700". When put together, it measures 15 inches tall at the center with arms that extend 17 inches across. The two weights are 5 inch solid copper plates on copper metal chains. The last photo shows my own scale displayed with glass grape clusters like those listed for sale elsewhere in my shop. Plastic flowers, fruit, and even candy were other items commonly displayed on the plates of decorative scales in their Mid Century heyday.

15407

Arts and Crafts Copper Charger Manning Bowman This beautiful 11-3/4 inch Arts and Crafts era hammered copper charger tray or plate was made by (or for) the Manning Bowman Company and is a rare example of their early giftware line. It has a more substantial weight than most MB copper items. There is an applied patina to the bump and angled scallop rim which apparently dripped during the making, causing a 1/4 inch oval dark spot and a couple of smaller ones. It looks like someone unsuccessfully tried to remove the larger spot. The back is stamped M.B. Means Best, Trademark, Manning-Bowman & Co., Meriden Conn. Made in U.S.A.

Large Mixed Metals Inlaid Egyptian Sphinx Charger This dramatic vintage Egyptian themed copper wall charger is copper with inlaid bronze and silver. It's quite heavy, nearly 16 inches diameter with a scene of a sphinx and the Great Pyramids in the center, surrounded by a wide border of Egyptian hieroglyphic symbols outlined in silver. The plate is in very good condition but it's a vintage item and shows a little age - minor tarnish specks to the copper areas and tiny bumps or dimples to the outer rim, none of which affect the displayability of the charger. A wire hanger is soldered to the back for hanging. There are no maker's marks or signatures.

Click for more detail...

14897

Craftsman Studios 6 Inch Copper Lotus Bowl It looks like someone polished the bejabbers out of this vintage Craftsman Studios copper bowl, but it's still lacquered - apparently it's been wrapped virtually airtight and stored for the past 70-some years. The small hammered copper bowl is a lotus flower shape with 5-point crimped rim, 6 inches diameter by just under 2 inches high. The underside is marked with the classic hammer and anvil logo "Craftsman Co. 1504". In excellent condition with no dings or notable scratches.

I have more than 2 dozen pieces of Craftsman pieces in my personal collection and have sold dozens more. With the exception of the earliest ones, the various Craftsman marks mean almost nothing when trying to date one of their pieces. Apparently whatever die stamp happened to be handy at the time was used when marking a piece. I'm dating this bowl to the late 1940s to early 1950s, based on my decades-long collecting and research history.

Copper Egyptian Spinx and Pyramids Wall Charger Plate This vintage 9-3/4 inch diameter copper wall charger plate depicts an Egyptian sphinx with the Great Pyramids in the background. The etched copper design is enhanced with a burnished deep bronze enamel finish to the background and selected details of the sphinx. The back is marked only with what appears to be the original owner's social security number, there are no other markings. A wire hanger is soldered to the back. The plate has a couple of minor dimples which are noticeable on the back but not at all at the front due to the composition of the design.

15374

Paisley Embossed Copper Ashtray 7 Inches I believe this vintage hand wrought silver washed copper bowl or dish is an ashtray. Made from thick copper, it measures 7-1/2 inches diameter by 1-1/4" deep. Five paisley or comma stroke shapes are embossed in high relief around the 1-1/2" rim. The interior bowl sides have vertical ribbing. There is some spotting from age and use in the bottom as shown. The bowl is marked only with the number 4 but is likely of Middle Eastern origin, perhaps Persian based on the paisley symbols.

16447

Large Solid Copper 10 Gallon Round Tub Pot I bought this large copper vessel at an estate auction more than 20 years ago. I'm not sure of its original purpose, but we used it as a fire wood container. It will hold more than 10 gallons, measuring about 15 inches in both height and diameter. It has two iron handles at the upper sides. There are some little dents and dings, and green verdigris film inside. I wiped off the dust but didn't clean or polish the pot.

It's tumbler shaped, 4-1/4 inches high by 2-3/8" diameter at the rim. The base is solid brass, the interior is lined in tin or nickel. I have not polished or cleaned it up. Click here to enlarge image and see more about item 12311-2: Poinsettia Embossed Solid Copper Basket Tray

Click for more detail...

12311-2

Poinsettia Embossed Solid Copper Basket Tray This vintage solid copper basket dish has an unusual embossed decoration of poinsettia flowers - the Christmas plant. It measures about 7-1/2 inches diameter by 6 inches high to the twisted copper handle. The underside is marked Hammercraft, Made In Canada.

The embossed flower detail is very realistic and skillfully executed. The basket has a wonderful dark warm brown patina. The black outlining appears to be a manufacturer applied finish called antiquing to simulate age. It can be removed easily by cleaning or polishing though of course that would destroy the fabulous patina. There's a very small, minor amount of verdigris in some the design folds. The camera flash enhanced it, it's not nearly as noticeable as it seems in the photos. There are also 3 or 4 tiny flecks of enamel paint. These are usually easy to scratch off but again, I didn't want to do anything to damage the patina.

15802

Arts and Crafts Copper Hand Wrought Wood Lined Box This rustic hand wrought copper box is from the early 20th Century, perhaps a little earlier. It measures 7-3/4 by 5-3/4 by 2-1/2 inches high. The interior sides and bottom are wood lined. The lid has a slightly domed flowering branch decoration embossed in high relief with a simple dot and dash border. It was well used (maybe as a cigarette box or humidor) but the hinge is intact and functional and there are no scratches or serious dents.

Click for more detail...

16071

Gregorian Copper Umbrella Stand Kindling Holder I've seen this Mid Century solid copper vessel by Gregorian described as a vase, a planter, and an umbrella stand. I think the size and shape would be impractical as a vase - it was actually used as a fireplace kindling bucket by the previous owner. It's a long V-shape, 12-1/2 inches high at the center by 7" diameter at the base. The top opening is 7-1/2 inches front to back by 9-3/4" side-to-side. The inside lacquered finish has scuffing and wear from years of use. There's also some light scuffing to the exterior and around the base, as well as light verdigris. It could use a polish and perhaps lacquer removal, but the vessel is sturdy, made of heavy, thick hammered copper.
