The American Bridge to the Israeli Commonwealth
When The American Bridge to the Israel Commonwealth was written in the 1950s, author Bernard A. Rosenblatt commented that Israel offered the possibility of an alternative path to the poverty-stricken masses of the world who were lured by the siren call of Communism. It also was a free system based upon the maximum of cooperation while preserving the precious heritage of hard-won rights and ancient liberties.

As Israel was the natural historical, as well as spiritual mediator between East and West, he wrote, it might well serve as a chief factor in preserving world peace by offering the example of economic cooperation among all classes in a contented society. Such a ‘social commonwealth’ could prove to be the harbinger of a new era in which it could play an effective role at America’s side.

This first edition, 128-page hardbound book was published in 1959 by Farrar, Straus & Cudahy, New York. Condition is Very Good, with no defects inside or out. It is ex lib, however, and has the usual library markings.

Rural Reconstruction in Ireland, 1919
This is a first edition copy of Rural Reconstruction in Ireland, written by Lionel Smith-Gordon and Laurence C. Staples to provide a history of the agricultural cooperation movement which offered more promise of real unity among Irish people than had earlier seemed possible,

Published in 1919 by Yale University Press, the 301-page hardbound book the authors suggest that the lack of unity in Ireland’s history is a problem of poverty – not only economic poverty, but also a poverty of industrial character and social life.

They include extensive information on Irish economic and social conditions, land legislation, early history of the cooperative movement, as well as specific information on cooperatives such as the Creameries, Agricultural societies, Credit societies, Miscellaneous societies (eggs and poultry, flax, beekeeping, live stock, bacon factories, fishing, insurance) and more, It’s a fascinating story!

Dawes Plan, WW1 Reparations, 1927

We see many reprints and 'print on demand' books for sale these days ... but we believe it's difficult in most instances to do better than the original version! Pages are where they should be ... and the photos and other illustrations are always included in the books we sell. Some of our books are ex lib (withdrawn from a library), but unless otherwise noted in our descriptions, these have no library-related damage beyond the usual library markings and card pockets. This book is one of those originals! IT'S NOT A REPRINT!

Ten years after the outbreak of World War I, the adoption of the Dawes Plan for settlement of the reparation question opened a new era in world economic relationships, providing the basis for a new orientation of economic forces in which America, instead of Europe, was to be supreme.

George P. Auld's THE DAWES PLAN AND THE NEW ECONOMICS discusses whether the mechanics of the exchange would seriously hinder or prevent the transfer of German reparation payments into foreign currencies suitable for use by Germany's creditors.

The Foreword is written by Rufus C. Dawes. The hardbound book was published in 1927 by Doubleday, Page & Co., New York, and apparently is a first edition.

It's in Good+ condition, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. The cover show very minor corner and spine end wear, with a small cut at top edge of the front cover. The front hinge is broken, but inside pages remain clean, crisp and tightly bound. (2175)

The Woman's Part: A Record of Munitions Work, WW I Great Britain

With 24 black/white photos in its 64 pages, L.K. Yates’ The Woman’s Part, A Record of Munitions Work is a remarkable record of the heroic work done by British women in the early years of the 20th century.

While the coal mines of Northumberland, the foundries of the Midlands and the cotton mills of Lancashire were aiding vast populations in their daily human struggle, the demand of 1914 for requirements of the war were neither contemplated nor prepared for.

As soon as the importance of the demand for munitions workers was understood, a supply of labour began streaming into the factory gates – with 2 million persons employed in the munitions industry and one third of them women!

This book chronicles the changes as makers of agricultural and textile machinery began to produce munitions. Producers of lead pencils turned out shrapnel. A court jeweler made optical instruments. New industries were started and earlier trades were revived. And women from all walks of life were rapidly initiated into the simple repetition processes of shell-making and shell-filling.

As noted by the wide-ranging topics in the contents, the author has noted many unique changes in the women’s lives as they moved through their strange war-time adventure. And in the photos, Yates has also shown the women at work – in making 4.5 inch cartridge cases and 9.2 inch high explosive shells; inspecting and gauging fuses; grinding blades of cast iron propellers; painting a ship’s side in dry dock; roughing optical glass – and more!

This fascinating softcover book was published by George H. Doran Co., New York in 1918.
Condition is only Fair, less than what we ordinarily sell here, but with all the earmarks of an important rare copy.

The covers were originally soft wraps; these have been treated to add strength. They show some discoloration on edges and spine. There is some age coloration to the paper inside and some pages have dog ears on corners. A few page edges show some waffling due to dampness. It is ex lib with the usual library markings. HOWEVER, the book is complete and readable! The photos are clear and remarkably unusual!
