What’s a “Palimpsest?” In early times, it was a parchment or other material from which writings had been erased to give room for later records. But the erasures were not always complete, so it became the task of scholars not only to translate the later records, but to reconstruct the original writings by deciphering the dim fragments of letters, partly erased and partly covered by later text. The State Historical Society of Iowa likened the state’s history to a palimpsest – holding the record of successive generations -- and this magazine was designed by the Society to disseminate Iowa history. The articles in each issue are quite detailed with names, places and dates!

Iowa in the Civil War

With Winslow Home’s painting of a young Union soldier on the front cover, this May/June, 1979 issue of The Palimpsest magazine, published by the State Historical Society of Iowa, features two articles on people and events of the Civil War.

They include:
FURLOUGH, about a group of young Iowa residents who had been recruited into the 13th Missouri Infantry, and the perils they faced when they traveled homeward from Atlanta after Sherman’s Army had conquered the city. The article is an almost storybook-like presentation of the incidents and is illustrated with pictures of the participants.

END OF INNOCENCE describes the lives of eight young Iowa boys who lost their lives in the Civil War, after enlisting together in August, 1861. All died at Pea Ridge, the culminating battle of the earliest campaign on the bloody Western front. Their stories were recovered from their diaries and letters home. This article includes some wonderful black/white photos of the fighters, as well as various Civil War leaders.

The issue is in Very Good condition with only minor corner wear to the covers and no apparent defects on inside pages. (4630)

Those shown date to the 1890s McKinley era and are part of the Johnson Bingham collection which were donated to the society by family of the former state librarian. Some great ones are shown here!

The second article tells of the life of Quaker minister Joseph A. Dugdale, known for the ‘children’s conventions’ he held throughout southeastern Iowa, as well as for his work to correct 19th century social evils. Special details of his cooperation with Sojourner Truth and his founding of the Iowa Peace Society.

Finally, excerpts from the memoirs of a young Iowa man who was part of the Student’s Army Training Corps during World War I, set up to meet the demand for a new pool of military officers. An interesting tale!
