1947 Passenger List,Voyage 2, SS Santa Paula, Grace Line Here is an original Souvenir Passenger List from Voyage Two of the SS Santa Paula sailing May 21, 1947 from the Caribbean to New York. A fascinating piece of history, the small (4.75- by 7.25-inch) booklet features a cover illustration of the ship, a listing of the eight officers and their titles, and a lengthy (3.5 page) alphabetical listing of passengers and hometowns on that particular voyage. As was the custom, passengers who met new friends on the ship signed this booklet with their names and, in some cases, home addresses and telephone numbers.

SS Santa Paula was a passenger and cargo ocean liner built for the Grace Line. She was the second of four sister ships ordered in 1930 and built at the Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Co. of Kearny, NJ. Her regular service route included inter-coastal service between the east coast and the west coast of the U.S. via the Caribbean and the Panama Canal. She later sailed on cruises from New York to the Caribbean and South America.

The ship's dining room was on the promenade deck between and had a retractable roof to let passengers dine under the tropical sky. All public rooms were on the promenade deck. The dining room formed an atrium stretching up two and a half decks to the retractable dome. First class cabins were outside and had twin beds and private baths. Grace Line was among the first companies to employ female dining room waitresses instead of male stewards.

The booklet is in Good condition overall. Cover edges and corners show some blunting. It appears inside pages have been re-stapled at some point and were not placed correctly, so the spine is uneven. Still, the booklet is complete and without tears or folds. It can be framed and admired -- or utilized as a genealogical reference!

M.V. BRITANNIC, 1st Class Passenger List, Cunard White Star, July 1953
This wonderful little booklet lists First Class passengers sailing on the M.V. Britannic from Liverpool to Cobh to New York on July 31, 1953. The ship was from the Cunard White Star Line and a very pretty color plate of it is tipped-in the front. The names of each of the cruise's passengers as well as information about the company, the vessel, and the fleet of which it was a member appears also. A sufficient number of these passenger lists was printed to assure one for every cabin passenger, and the lists were usually distributed soon after the vessel left dock. The lists were not only prized as souvenirs, but proved invaluable in assisting passengers to make acquaintances on the trip. This booklet includes names and titles of the ship's officers, too.

The 8-page softcover booklet measures 5.5- by 8.25 inches and is in Very Good condition with only a few chips and light wear on the cover edges/corners. The inside is clean and the stapled binding is straight and firm.

T.S.S.Rotterdam 1930s Dining Room Postcard

Here’s an original postcard showing the Dining Room of the T.S.S. Rotterdam, a ship from the Holland-America Line. The Rotterdam was one of the earlier ships of the Holland America Line used for pleasure cruising. (The first Holland America cruise was to Copenhagen in June 1895.)

She was specially chartered for ‘Frank Clark’s 16th Annual Cruise to the Mediterranean and the Orient’ which left New York on February 16, 1914. The ship was advertised as ‘sumptuous’ with 56 rooms with brass bedsteads and private baths. There were also 150 single rooms and ‘no overcrowding.’

One of her most attractive features was ‘an immense Dining Saloon, seating nearly 500 people at small tables, where all of our passengers will take their meals, and where an orchestra of artists of high merit will play during lunch and dinner, as well as in the Social Hall in the evening.’

The cuisine was strictly French and famous among the most exacting travelers. Meals were served a la carte, with passengers ordering what they liked, without extra charge, from an elaborate bill of fare. The stewards and stewardesses on the ‘Rotterdam’ spoke English.

The postcard is in Excellent condition, unused with no writing. A great view of that wonderful dining room!
