242550

1898 Book Reading PA, 34th Annual Report Board of Water Commissioners Vintage book from the city of Reading, Pennsylvania (PA, Pa., Penn., Penna), which is in Berks County, stated on the title page as the '34th Annual Report of the Board of Water Commissioners, to the Select and Common Councils of the City of Reading'. It covers the fiscal year April 4, 1898 through April 3, 1899 and was published on May 31, 1899. Size is 6 1/8 inches wide x 9 1/4 inches tall with 194 pages and blue cloth covers covered on the inside front and back covers with the expected antique patterned paper. Printed by W. Rosenthal, City Printer.

What is particularly neat about this rare book is that the inside pages are in excellent shape, with key tissue paper inserts and pullouts still present in terrific condition. In addition to having 2 photos and many tables in the report, there is a tissue insert table on Annual Rainfall 1880-1898 (labelled Plate 3), and two pull-out tissue inserts, Daily Consumption of Water compared with mean daily temperature and daily rainfall (Plate 1), and Daily Height of Maidencreek (Maiden Creek) compared with daily rainfall and turbidity of water (Plate 2). We have shown images of each of these, as well as of the covers, inside cover, and some pages, so please allow time for these to load (in some of the images you will also see another small blue book which we just used to prop open some pages for shooting).

While the inside pages are great, the condition of the outside covers is poor. There is old water damage to the front and back covers, causing wrinkling or buckling, discoloration, etc., as can be seen in the images, how the inside pages avoided this is surprising. The outer cover corners are bumped or worn, with wear also to the book edges. While all pages appear to be present, it looks like the book was opened too far at the double page before the title page, resulting in paper tearing along the binding edge, or perhaps there was a page here that was removed, we don't know for sure, it just doesn't look smoothly bound here. The antique book's pages do have some folding at the corner edges, some slight wear or dirt along the edge sides, and we noted a few tiny dots on a few pages and one small circle stain on one page.

Still a terrific bit of history for anyone collecting historical memorabilia related to Reading, Pennsylvania or its surrounding areas, or for anyone interested in the science or management of water (water commissions, water boards, rainfall, drinking water, etc.).

Please note that we have other books listed for sale. If you wish to purchase more than one book, please e-mail us before placing the order since the shipping information has been inputted for a purchase of just one and will not calculate the savings you would get when purchasing more than one shipped together in the same package (we would be pleased to calculate this for you).

Click for more detail...

1147

Judy Bolton Mystery, The Rainbow Riddle, Book #17, with Dust Jacket This is a hard to find old Judy Bolton Mystery Stories book, with the hard cover reddish-brown tweed book having a multi-color printed dust jacket. Book #17 in the Judy Bolton Mystery series by Margaret Sutton. Photo shows the paper dust jacket cover, The Rainbow Riddle, #17 printed on dust jacket binding outer edge bottom (just barely seen due to much wear/tears/chipping on dust jacket here), published by Grosset & Dunlap (no Grosset & Dunlap number is printed on the dust jacket). Copyright date on back of title page is 1946. It is not a first edition of the book as the inside page lists other books in the series under this title, with last entry as The Clue of the Broken Wing. The inside front cover flap of the dust jacket also has same list. The inside back cover flap lists The Vicki Barr Flight Stewardess Series books, ending with The Clue of the Gold Coin. The back cover of the dust jacket lists the Nancy Drew Mystery Books, ending with The Hidden Window Mystery. Book measures about 5 1/8 x 7 5/8 inches. Used condition, not mint, with much reading/age wear to the dust jacket. The book itself is in great condition, inside clean & tight. Dust jacket wear includes along the top and bottom edge folding/wrinkling/chipping/small pieces missing/small tears, creases, scuffing, etc., particularly at the top and bottom of the spine. The front inside flap was ripped off at one point, being now held onto the jacket with old tape on both the inside and outside of the jacket (this is the way we got it), you can see the vertical tape and rip lines on the front cover. There is a vertical tear at the top front cover edge next to the "Y" in Mystery (about 1/2 inch in length), similar tears on the back cover at the top, and top and bottom of the edge of the inside back flap, some slight yellowing on the inside of the dust jacket. This book was clearly enjoyed by the former owner! Still a hard to find book, particularly with its dust jacket.

Please note that we have two books in this series listed for sale separately. If you wish to purchase more than one book, please e-mail us before placing the order since the shipping information has been inputted for a purchase of just one book and will not calculate the savings you would get when purchasing more than one shipped together in the same package (we will need to handle this for you).

Click for more detail...

1649

Tom Swift Jr. Series, Tom Swift & His Electronic Retroscope, Book #14 From the nifty The New Tom Swift Jr. Adventures book series written by Victor Appleton II and published by Grosset & Dunlap. This is book #14, 'Tom Swift and His Electronic Retroscope'. It is a hard cover edition without dust jacket (as issued), with the 'school bus yellow' binding. We believe this to be a 1960s edition of this book, and has a copyright date of 1959 and two tone blue and white line pictorial inner cover pages. Book measures 5 1/8 x 7 5/8 inches. We are concurrently listing another book in this same series, with each sold separately.

The condition of this #14 book is good. It has been read or used and is not mint, but still in good shape. There is edge wear and corner bumping or wear on the outside covers including wear along the outer edges of the spine, and other dirt, wear spots or rubbing particularly on the back cover, and slight dirt/darkening on the outer bottom and side edge pages. While the interior is all attached, there is a vertical break line where the inside front cover meets the first interior page...as if someone opened the book too far and separated these pages from each other. Along the inside back cover there is a similar vertical separation but to a much lesser degree. The remainder of the interior is tight and largely clean, although we do see yellow spotting on the pages prior to the title page (not water damage). On the first interior white page is a gift inscription to the original owner (who was 10 at receipt). Nothing overly bad or unexpected. A highly usable, nice reading copy.

Please note: If you are interested in more than one of these Tom Swift Jr. series books, please contact us before placing the order. The shipping information has been inputted for a purchase of just one and will not calculate the savings you would get when purchasing more than one shipped together in the same package (we will need to handle this for you).

The Bobbsey Twins Mystery at Meadowbrook Book #7 Book #7 in series by Laura Lee Hope. Hardcover, purple binding, no dust jacket (didn't have one as issued), photo shows cover, The Bobbsey Twins Mystery at Meadowbrook, #7 printed on binding outer edge, published by Grosset & Dunlap with #8007 on binding outer edge. Copyright date on back of title page is 1963, and this is definitely an older issue. Inside page lists other books in series with last entry as And the Big River Mystery. The back cover also lists other books in the series, ending with The Search for the Green Rooster. Book measures 5 1/8 x 7 5/8 inches. Very good used condition, not mint with some expected reading/age wear including some cover corner bumping, edge wear, touch of soiling, but nothing bad at all. Inside bright, clean & tight. A great copy.

Click for more detail...

1212

Judy Bolton The Discovery at the Dragon's Mouth Book 31 1st Ed DJ This is a hard to find old Judy Bolton Mystery Stories book, with the hard cover reddish-brown tweed book having a multi-color printed dust jacket. Book #31 in the Judy Bolton Mystery series by Margaret Sutton. Photo shows the paper dust jacket cover, The Discovery at the Dragon's Mouth, #31 printed on dust jacket binding outer edge middle, published by Grosset & Dunlap (no Grosset & Dunlap number is printed on the outer dust jacket, on the inside front flap at the bottom under the publisher name is printed the number 100150 in black and the number 100100 is printed in red at the top of this inside front flap).

Copyright date on back of title page is 1960. We believe this to be a first edition because a front of book inside page lists other books in the series ending this list with this book's title. The inside back cover flap of the dust jacket also has same list also ending with this book. The outside back cover lists The Vicki Barr books, ending with The Silver Ring Mystery. The inside front flap of the dust jacket provides a summary of the book.

Book measures about 5 1/4 x 7 5/8 inches. Used condition, not mint, with much reading/age/use wear to the dust jacket. The book itself is in great condition, inside clean & tight, with just a few tiny brown spots. Dust jacket wear includes along the top and bottom edges folding/wrinkling/chipping/small pieces missing/small tears, creases, scuffing, etc., particularly at the top and bottom of the spine. At the top and bottom of the spine there are vertical tears, with the top tear curving back like a backwards J through the name of the book on the spine, with this prevented from further ripping by old tape on the inside of the dust jacket. There is also another small tear near the bottom spine but interior to the front jacket near the M in Margaret Sutton's name (as if this was pierced here). There is an about 1 inch long vertical tear on the front edge along where it meets the inside front flap, with much vertical creasing lines along the front flap edge and a small triangular tear along the front flap edge at the bottom. There are similar but smaller tears at the top and bottom of the flap edge for the back cover flap. There are fold lines visible on the front of the book through and below the word Bolton at the top, and other scuffing/white lines in this top A Judy Bolton Mystery wording. There is some yellowing/dirt on the inside of the dust jacket particularly where it covers the back of the book. This book was clearly enjoyed by the former owner! Still a hard to find book, particularly with its dust jacket.

Please note that we have two books in this series listed for sale separately. Click for more detail...

1387

The Happy Hollisters At Circus Island Book This is the hardback book with dust jacket, "The Happy Hollisters at Circus Island", by author Jerry West with illustrations by Helen S. Hamilton, published by Doubleday & Company, Inc. in Garden City, NY (as stated at the bottom of the title page), with a publication date on the backside of title page in Roman numerals, 1955 or MCMLV. Hardback book itself has deep red coloring with black line illustration of 5 children running/playing in a curved line holding hands in lower right corner. Paper dust jacket cover is full color printing of 5 children performing as part of a circus, including one sitting on the trunk of an elephant and a sixth figure, a clown, performing with a dog jumping through a hoop. Book measures 5 3/4 x 8 1/2 inches, with a depth of about 13/16 inch.

This is one of several books we are listing in this fun children's book series about the five Hollister family children and the adventures they have. With this book, a prior owner has put a clear plastic cover or sleeve covering most of the dust jacket (the dust jacket has been slipped inside this sleeve before being folded around the book; the sleeve stops short of covering a slight vertical strip of each of the inside front and back flaps). Also, on the front inside flap of the dust jacket there is a price sticker with a price of $3.50.

This vintage collectible book is in overall nice used condition. It has been read and is not mint, but is overall very clean and highly usable. There is use/age wear to the dust jacket visible under the clear sleeve, with cover scuffing in a number of places in the illustration, the title words and along the front right and bound left edges, there are folding lines and tiny tears along the front cover top edge with small triangluar chipping, small tears and folding on the back cover top and bottom edges, similar edge wear on the bound side, and yellowing/aging/slight browning to the white on the back cover. The inside of the book itself is very clean and in great shape, with a bit of wrinkling to the front inside cover and first page. The top edge of the pages are a light yellow as manufactured.

A nice addition to any collection of this great children's series.

Please note that we have several books in this series for sale. If you wish to purchase more than one book, please e-mail us before placing the order since the shipping information has been inputted for a purchase of just one book and will not calculate the savings you would get when purchasing more than one shipped together in the same package (we will need to handle this for you).

Click for more detail...

1650

Tom Swift Jr. Series, Tom Swift & His Triphibian Atomicar, Book #19 From the nifty The New Tom Swift Jr. Adventures book series written by Victor Appleton II and published by Grosset & Dunlap. This is book #19, 'Tom Swift and His Triphibian Atomicar'. It is a hard cover edition without dust jacket (as issued), with the 'school bus yellow' or 'gold printed' binding. This has a copyright date of 1962 and black and white line pictorial inner cover pages. Further, we believe this to be a first edition of this book. On the back cover the publisher has listed the other books available in this series at the time this book was issued. This list ends with book #18, so this book #19 is believed to be a first edition. Book measures 5 1/8 x 7 5/8 inches. We are concurrently listing another book in this same series, with each sold separately.

The condition of this #19 book is very good. It has been read or used and is not mint, but still in very good shape. There is edge wear and corner bumping or wear on the outside covers (but not bad), and slight other dirt, wear spots or rubbing, and slight dirt/darkening on the outer bottom and side edge pages. The interior is largely tight, nice and clean, but we do note a few things. Between pages 184 and 185 the spine has been cracked or the pages separated from each other....everything is still very attached to the book but it's as if someone opened the book too wide between these two pages. There is some minor page tearing along the bottom edge of the last few pages (a tiny bit on the bottom of 185/186, with more on the bottom of 187/188 and the last inside white/inside back cover page). We note some glue bumps in this same locale at the bottom of the inside back cover so perhaps these pages received a slight tear when the first reader needed to separate them. There is a slight page fold in the middle of the first inside page. On the first interior white page the name of a prior owner is written in script. Nothing overly bad or unexpected. A highly usable, nice reading copy.

Please note: If you are interested in more than one of these Tom Swift Jr. series books, please contact us before placing the order. The Bobbsey Twins Mystery on the Deep Blue Sea Book #11 Book #11 in series by Laura Lee Hope. Hardcover, purple binding, no dust jacket (didn't have one as issued), photo shows cover, The Bobbsey Twins Mystery on the Deep Blue Sea, #11 printed on binding outer edge, published by Grosset & Dunlap with #8011 on binding outer edge. Copyright date on back of title page is 1965, and this is definitely an older issue. Inside page lists other books in series with last entry as Mystery on the Deep Blue Sea. We believe this may be a first edition of this book since the inside book list ends with this book's title and this is the only Bobbsey Twin book we have which, on the title page under the copyright line, lists a Library of Congress Catalog Card number (65-18449). The back cover also lists other books in the series, ending with The Search for the Green Rooster (but does not list this book's title). Book measures 5 1/8 x 7 5/8 inches. Very good used condition, not mint with some expected reading/age wear including some cover corner bumping, edge wear, some soiling (some noticeable on front cover, more on back cover), but not too bad. Inside bright, clean & tight. A great copy.

The Happy Hollisters at Snowflake Camp Book This is the hardback book with dust jacket, "The Happy Hollisters at Snowflake Camp", by author Jerry West. The cover also states the book has "Over Seventy Illustrations in Two Colors by Helen S. Hamilton". It was published by Doubleday & Company, Inc. in Garden City, NY (as stated at the bottom of the title page), with a publication date on the backside of title page in Roman numerals, 1954 or MCMLIV. Hardback book itself has deep red coloring with black line illustration of 5 children running/playing in a curved line holding hands in lower right corner. Paper dust jacket cover is full color printing of 5 children playing in the snow. Two are riding in a sled pulled by two dogs (dog sled), with one running behind holding onto the sled and the other two children running in front and back of the sled group. Book measures 5 3/4 x 8 1/2 inches, with a depth of about 3/4 inch.

This is one of several books we are listing in this fun children's book series about the five Hollister family children and the adventures they have. On the front inside flap of the dust jacket at the upper right is printed the price $1.50.

This vintage collectible book is in very usable condition. It has been read and is not mint, but is overall clean. There is use/age wear to the dust jacket, with some cover scuffing visible among/within the book title and the author name and within the illustration, as well as along the front bound left edge. There is paper wear with bending, scuff wear and a small tear at the front cover top binding edge, slight bending with paper wear elsewhere on the top cover edge, tiny paper tearing and wear on the side binding bottom edge, dirt spotting and yellowing/aging/slight browning to the white on the back cover, wrinkling and tiny paper tears to the back cover top edge and some light browning/spotting on the inside of the dust jacket. While the inside of the book itself is very clean, there has been some wrinkling, bending and page folding, with some pages looking "pushed in" and curved, as if the book wasn't stored properly at some point and something else bent some pages. This occurs from page 27 on in the book, with page 27 having the most bending/wrinkling (so perhaps this is the page which was open when something else pushed into the book). Not all pages from here on have curving/bending, but enough do so you should be aware of this. You can see the curving to some pages when looking at the book from the top or bottom page ends. The top edge of the pages are a light yellow as manufactured.

Still a very readable copy to add to any collection of this great children's series.

1359

The Hardy Boys Series, The Tower Treasure, Book #1 From the wonderful The Hardy Boys book series written by Franklin W. Dixon and published by Grosset & Dunlap. This is book #1, 'The Tower Treasure'. It has the desirable 'blue binding' (turquoise blue), and is a hardcover edition without dust jacket (as sold). We believe this to be a 1960s/1970s edition of this book, and has a copyright date of 1959 and white with black line pictorial inner cover pages. Book measures 5 2/8 x 7 5/8 inches.

We actually are listing many others of these hard cover "blue binding" Hardy Boys books (including multiple copies of some books). The books appear to come from different editions of this set, based on slight differences in their covers. The books are all being sold separately; you can buy the one you need to complete your collection, or several to start one!

This #1 book is an updated version of the original 1920s issues. On the back of the title page it states, "In this new story, based on the original of the same title, Mr. Dixon has incorporated the most up-to-date methods used by police and private detectives."

The condition of this #1 book is very good. It has been read or used and is not mint, but still in good shape. There is edge wear and corner bumping or wear on the outside covers, and other small dirt, wear spots or rubbing including slight dirt/darkening on the outer edge pages, but nothing bad or unexpected. The inside is nice and clean. A highly usable, nice reading copy.

Please note: If you are interested in more than one of the Hardy Boys books we have available for sale, please contact us before placing the order. 1361

The Hardy Boys Series, The House on the Cliff, Book #2, A From the wonderful The Hardy Boys book series written by Franklin W. Dixon and published by Grosset & Dunlap. This is book #2, 'The House on the Cliff'. It has the desirable 'blue binding' (turquoise blue), and is a hardcover edition without dust jacket (as sold). We believe this to be a 1960s edition of this book, and has a copyright date of 1959 and tan/brown/white pictorial inner cover pages. Book measures 5 1/8 x 7 5/8 inches. We have one other copy of this book with slightly different cover heading/condition which we are listing as "B".

We actually are listing many others of these hard cover "blue binding" Hardy Boys books (including multiple copies of some books). The books appear to come from different editions of this set, based on slight differences in their covers. The books are all being sold separately; you can buy the one you need to complete your collection, or several to start one!

This #2 book is an updated version of the original 1920s issues. On the back of the title page it states, "In this new story, based on the original of the same title, Mr. Dixon has incorporated the most up-to-date methods used by police and private detectives."

The condition of this #2 book is acceptable. It has been read or used and is not mint. While overall very readable, we need to note that with this book, while all pages are there, the outer edge binding on the inside has been pulled away from much of the book, likely from having been opened too far when being read. Pages are still all attached to each other, but in two separate groupings (start through 32, then 33 through the end), with each grouping attached to it's associated front inner or back inner cover. There is also edge wear and corner bumping or wear on the outside covers, and other small dirt, wear spots or rubbing including slight dirt/darkening on the outer edge pages, but nothing unexpected. The inside is nice and clean except for the break between pages 32 and 33 previously stated.
