8255

1800s Six Quart Antique Copper Water Kettle This antique solid copper 1800s water kettle is massive compared to modern kettles - I measured out six quarts of water and it still didn't come all the way up to the rim. It's very attractive as well, with embossed teardrop or flower petal designs around the upper shoulder. The kettle is 6-1/2" high to the rim, not including the lid, about 11-1/2" high to the top of the handle when raised. It measures 9-1/4" diameter across the bottom.

The handle and hinged mountings are cast iron with a wood grip. One mounting has partially separated from the kettle, it's still firmly in place but there's a crack to the metal underneath. The spout has been re-soldered at the base and the repair held - the kettle does not leak. The bottom has some fireplace carbon deposits and scorch marks but they're not heavy. There are a few small dents and dings as you can see but for its age I think it's held up remarkably well, and the patina is wonderful. I find no markings, which is typical for a mid 19th Century American piece like this, but I'm fairly certain it's American made.

Click for more detail...

13599

Islamic Persian Brass Wall Art Panel 17 by 22 Inches Most of the Islamic or Persian metal wall art I've seen has been limited to chargers and trays. This large chased and embossed solid brass piece almost looks like a fireplace guard, but I've never seen one that didn't come from Europe or North America. It measures 17-3/4 inches wide by 22-1/4 inches high and is self-framed, extending an inch from the wall.

There are four human figures in the elaborate scene as well as a deer, trees, plants and flowers. Perhaps they represent Islamic folklore or mythology - the two smaller figures in the upper corners appear to be some sort of love Gods. The 1-1/2 inch outer border is a punched or pierced repeating trefoil design. There is a hanger mounted at the top which is not perfectly centered (1/4 inch off). It's simply a small drilled hole to which a thin strip of brass has been inserted, paper fastener style, to hold the ring. The hanger may have been added later. There is some whitish verdigris within the fine chased detail.

I used a soft, non-direct flash in most of the pictures to better show the engraving and high relief embossing. I don't have any provenance on this exceptional piece, other than it was purchased at an Idaho estate auction where I saw a few pieces of antique Asian art but nothing similar to this. Weight is 6 pounds before packing and boxing.

Click for more detail...

13997

Antique Wood Cane Walking Stick Carved Bird Handle Glass Eyes This hand made wood folk art cane or walking stick has a carved wood bird's head handle with glass eyes. The almost hair-fine feather line pattern on the handle appears to have been made pyrographically - wood burning with a super thin needle tip. You can tell that the bird handle is original, as some of the pyrographic feather lines extend a bit below the head into the shaft.

The shaft is a knotty hollow branch plugged with a dowel. I don't know what type of wood. There is no end cap. Length is 34-3/8 inches, shaft width is an inch or so (varies due to the nature of the knotty wood), the bird's head handle is about 3-3/8 inches wide overall. There is light wear consistent with age, no overt damage or issues.

13441

3 Legged Antique Copper Ebelskiver Pan This primitive antique copper ebelskiver or aebleskiver pan has 3 legs and was made for cooking over an open fire. A single heart shape depression in the center is surrounded by six round depressions openings for the cakes or dumplings. The pan is about 11-3/4 inches diameter by 3-1/2 inches high. The thick poured tin lining has a piece missing near the rim over a repair to one leg, and there is a nickle size dent to the exterior of one round depression. Smaller old dents and dings abound as shown, all typical of an authentically old European cooking pan.

13600

Antique Copper Syrup Dispenser Early to Mid 1800s This handsome little hand forged copper syrup dispenser dates from the early to mid 1800s. It's unsigned but probably American made. The body is paneled, the lid is hinged. It measures 4-1/2 inches high to the lid finial, nearly 4 inches wide from handle to spout, and 2" diameter at the base.

The pitcher is heavy for its size and has an authentic patina. The only issue is that the handle has become detached from the body at the bottom. Please note that the closeup photo is greatly enlarged - the separation is barely noticeable when viewed normally.

11315

Victorian Metal Coal Box Bin Scuttle With Bronze Hardware This antique steel coal box or bin (also called a coal hod or scuttle) dates to the Victorian era. It has a flat black finish with ornate bronze hinges, top handle, and door pull. A wide handle at the back generally held a shovel when not in use. It was used for storing coal, firewood, or kindling near the fireplace or stove.

The bin measures about 17" long from front to back, plus another 2 inches for the extended back handle. It's 10-3/4" wide by 14-3/4" high to the upper handle. The left end cap to the upper bronze handle has a crack. I've left it alone, the buyer can decide whether to repair by welding or gluing. No other issues other than normal wear inside.

4938

Deep Purple Antique Porcelain Mug or Stein with Hand Painted Plums A tall unmarked late Victorian to early Edwardian era porcelain beer mug or stein with a dramatic hand painted plums decoration. The color below the fruit is what I'd call an indigo or cobalt purple, very deep and dark. It's hard to see with the heavy, dark glaze, but the mug blank has in-mold feather filigree designs at the base and handle, and there's a subtle paneled effect below the rim. About 6-1/4 inches high by 4-3/8 inches diameter at the bottom swell, 3" diameter at the rim.

There is some all-over crazing to the white areas which is slightly age stained in the bottom. Other than a pinprick size glaze skip or flake to the front center of the design opposite the handle, there is no damage or wear to the mug or the painted design.

Click here to enlarge image and see more about item 13792: Victorian Square Copper Tea Kettle English VR Crown Mark

Click for more detail...

13792

Victorian Square Copper Tea Kettle English VR Crown Mark This unusual nineteenth century copper tea kettle was made in England. It bears the impressed V crown R mark on both sides, which stands for Victoria Regina. The mark was in use from 1837 to about 1876. The mark doesn't signify any royal connection other than that the item was made during Queen Victoria's reign. The small kettle would have been used at the table, rather than to heat water on a stove or fire.

The kettle is about 8-1/4 inches high to the top of the copper handle. The rectangular cube body is about 6 by 4-1/2 inches. The stationary handle, lid finial, and four legs are brass. The original brass peg handle mounts replaced were replaced by hex nuts long ago. The gooseneck spout has quite a bit of solder where it joins to the body, it may have been repaired. The solder visible at the seams is normal. There are some minor dents and dings, certainly fewer than you might expect for a roughly 150 year old household kettle like this.

11679

Arts and Crafts Set Tooled Painted Leather Blotter Corners This set of four Arts and Crafts era desk blotter corners is made of tooled leather, embossed in a stylized floral and fern design, then hand painted in primary colors of red, green, yellow, and blue. They're 6-3/4 inches across at the widest points, 4-3/4 inches from the center points to the blunt bottom edges. There are no tears, splits, or seam separations, just very light normal wear to the lower points and some minor scuffing of the textured black lower panels that slide under the blotter.

Click for more detail...

12138

Antique Photographic Transfer Porcelain Plate Hugging Little Girls This unusual old porcelain pictorial plate isn't marked so I can't date it precisely, but judging from the green transfer print in the center, it's from the early 1900s. The gold-trimmed scalloped plate measures about 7-1/2 inches diameter and is decorated with pink and blue flowers around the rim. In the center is a realistic photographic type transfer of two small girls embracing. Judging from their dresses and hair, they appear to be from the late Victorian to early Edwardian era.

The plate has no damage, although there is a little expected wear to the gold trim. This was a display plate, not for the table, so there are no scratches or marks from stacking or utensil use. The lower left edge of the green transfer may have a smudge or miss in application at the factory.

7669

1903 Tyrrells Hygienic Wood Box Quack Medicine Colon Cascade This is a wooden box (only) to a circa 1903 quack medical device - the "J.B.L. Cascade" produced by Tyrrell's Hygienic Institute of New York. It once contained "the only appliance specially made for 'flushing the colon' - basically, an early enema bag.

The instructions for use as well as the outrageous advertising claims are printed on the inside bottom of the box. An illustration of the cascade device is there too. The hinged pine box has dovetailed corners, a brass hook clasp, and the company's logo, name, product, and patent dates in pyrography on the lid. The box has some minor finish wear but is in overall good condition for being more than 100 years old. Measurements: 10 by 5-3/4 by 3-1/2 inches.

Antique Number 2 Sad Iron and Trivet This unrestored cast iron sad iron isn't marked with anything but the number 2 but it dates from the 1870s to 1890s. It's 6-1/2" long by just under 3-1/2" wide by 1-7/8" high. There is no handle but the iron comes with a cast iron trivet with the impressed mark: Pleuger & Henger Mfg. Co. St. Louis Mo. The center of the trivet has a fancy script P & H logo inside a diamond shape. The trivet has a little rust naturally but not as much as it looks like in the pictures. Perfect for a bookend, doorstop, or display.

Antique Whitewashed Woven Wood Picnic Basket A wonderful old white washed woven wood picnic basket with a great primitive look from a Montana estate, 13-1/2" by 12" by 8" high not including the two bentwood swing handles. The lid is secured by two metal hinges at the back and a metal hook and eye closure at the front. I'm not sure if the whitewash paint is original but it looks it - it's definitely old, not applied recently. Antique Japan Hand Painted Floral Serving Plate This antique hand painted 10" floral plate isn't marked but I believe it was made in Japan prior to the 1920s. It has hand painted colorful flowers and an embossed orange-red rim with gold trim and raised moriage treatment on some of the flowers. The only marking is a raised 4-pointed star at the center underside, which is actually a firing support mark. It's a pretty plate for use or display and has no damage and little if any wear.

Click here to enlarge image and see more about item 13767: Antique Copper Spirit Tea Kettle With Stand

Click for more detail...

13767

Antique Copper Spirit Tea Kettle With Stand This type of 19th century tea kettle was called a spirit kettle. They hung from a stand and were heated over an open flame created by lighting the alcohol (or spirit) burner in the base of the stand. None of the pieces have any markings, but the distinctive coiled finial on the lid and openwork brass stand arms indicate probably Scandinavian origin.

The solid copper tea pot is wide and low with a partially covered, angled straight spout and hinged handle. Brass pegs at the sides allow the user to mount the kettle in place on the stand. Height is 3 inches to the rim seam, about 7-1/2 inches to the top of the handle. The pot is 9" diameter across the shoulder, not including the pegs or spout. The stand is copper with brass arms. It's a little over 8 inches diameter at the base by 8-3/4" high. The spirit burner has its wick and the original copper cap.

There are a couple of small dings on the side of the kettle opposite the spout. They are old and patinated, hard to see. There is some verdigris near the rivets and hardware joints. The coloring is a warm brown with a hint of red. I had to lighten the photos some to better show the details, resulting in a spotty appearance to the patina which is not nearly as prominent in normal lighting conditions.

Click for more detail...

13511

Antique Copper German Jugendstil Spirit Kettle This attractive German Jugendstil Art Nouveau copper and brass tea kettle dates to the early 1900s. It was made by the Gebruder Bing Company.

The kettle hangs from its original brass stand and has an alcohol burner at the base. The oval shape gooseneck kettle body has an organic repousse vines or branches decoration. The squared brass handle has a fixed coiled brass clutch in the center. Note the distinctive angled omega shape of the lid finial.

This type of kettle was called a spirit kettle, after the alcohol burners at the base of the holder. Although not marked that I can see, it is well documented as having been made by Gebruder Bing of Nuremberg Germany.

It holds about 3 cups and is 7-3/4" wide from shoulder to spout, 4-1/2 inches across the narrow side, and about 8 inches high to the top of the handle. The brass stand is a little over 14" high.

The burner is missing the wick cover and one post, and it is dented on one side. The base of the kettle has a few honest dings from use (see third to last picture, left side) but they're minor for a 100-plus year old teapot. If you plan to actually use the kettle, I would have the interior relined first. The lining has deteriorated where the hanging bolts attach, and it may contain lead.

Click for more detail...

13552

Arts and Crafts Antique Copper Hot Plate Kitchen Trivet Very attractive repousse copper hot plate or trivet, made during the early 1900s. The hot plate is 7-1/2 inches diameter, decorated with an embossed transitional Art Nouveau to Arts and Crafts organic motif in the center, surrounded by stippling and a feathered scrollwork border. The underside is backed with black wool felt to protect your counters and tabletop. Between the copper and the felt is a layer of stiff white heat absorbent material.

I have not cleaned it of course - there is some light green verdigris in the grooves of the decoration. I've had success removing verdigris using a soft toothbrush and Dawn dishwashing liquid (with a very light touch), more stubborn spots may require vinegar instead of Dawn. A functional yet extremely decorative piece of antique kitchenware.

Children Playing Robin Hood Antique Porcelain Tea Trivet This turn-of-the-century or late 1800s hard paste porcelain china tea trivet or hot plate is decorated with a charming scene of children at play, dressed up as Robin Hood and Maid Marian. It isn't marked but is probably German in origin. About 6-3/8" diameter. The only damage is a small chip on the underside unglazed ring with a thin hairline just below it. Baby in Moon Antique Child's Feeding Bowl Dish This 1920s or earlier baby feeding dish is pottery in a chrome plated metal holder with handles and a stoppered spout for holding hot water. The illustration in the bottom is painted, not a decal - it depicts a sweet sleeping blanket-wrapped baby nestled in a crescent moon with stars in the blue background. The dish is 6 inches diameter by 2-1/2" deep, 8 inches wide across the handles.

There is some crazing to the heavy china bowl but no chips, flakes, or cracks. The metal holder does have a thin crack at the rim however, near the spout. The bottom is marked G.W. Co. in a triangle.

Antique Copper Childs Play Tea Set This hand wrought antique solid copper child's tea set dates to the mid-late 1800s. It includes a 12 by 8-1/4 inch tray, tea or coffee pot, covered sugar bowl, and four cups. The lids are decorated with curlicue scroll finials and all of the pieces have the same simple triple lines or rings decoration.

The coffee pot is 3-3/4" high by 2-1/4" diameter at the base. The sugar is just under 2-3/4 inches, and the four cups are 1-1/2" high by 2-3/8 inches across the rims. The coffee has a few small dings and interior rim of the sugar lid is slightly out of round. The cups are in good condition. The tray is a bit warped with numerous dings but many of them can be smoothed out with a rubber mallet if desired. I find no markings on any of the pieces. The set hasn't been cleaned or polished in many years and I left it that way. Price reflects condition of the tray.

Antique Primitive Hammered Copper Water Kettle This heavy, primitive hammered copper water or tea kettle is close to 200 years old - produced in the first half of the 1800s, probably in Northern Europe - Sweden, Norway, Finland or Denmark. The style of lid finial and the way the handle is attached are indicative of Scandinavian origin. It's very heavy, solid copper with a bronze handle, and completely hand made. It has numerous dents and dings, but the only glaring dent is to the base of the gooseneck spout. The spout has been repaired where it joins to the body - more than once, from the looks of it. The bottom is somewhat rounded and the kettle won't sit perfectly flat, but it was made to hang over a fire and a perfectly flat bottom wasn't a priority back then.

The whitish area around the base of the spout is just silver solder - for some reason the camera flash really enhanced it but it's nowhere near as prominent as it looks. The inside is unlined and not suitable for use, but the original strainer piece is still inside the base of the spout, indicating that it was made and used as a real water kettle, not a decorative piece. The kettle is just over 8" wide from the spout to the opposite side, and about that high with the handle in the raised position.
