14603

Jingle Abra Swedish Brass Christmas Angel Reindeer Candle Chimes A scarce complete boxed Jingle Abra brass Christmas candle chimes set, made in Sweden in the 1950s. It's a fancier version of the classic Swedish angel chimes with both reindeer and angel charms. The heat from candle flames makes the stamped brass pieces spin or rotate. The chimes ring when the posts dangling from the moving charms hit them.

You can use the reindeer charms or the angels, both sets are included. There are two trumpeting angels at the base and an additional angel for the top. Or use the red enameled Merry Xmas star at the top instead. There are also optional Merry Xmas and Happy Birthday red stars for the center.

The chimes are bell shape rather than the typical round cups found on standard angel chimes and each has a little brass star at the top (they were accidentally left out for two of the pictures, but both are present in the box). The set is 100 percent complete including four unused red candles. Even the original old and yellowed paper insert describing the Swedish chimes Christmas tradition is present.

Some of the brass pieces have age patina but you can polish them to a high shine if desired. There is a little old wax in the candle cups. The box has some age discoloration and light storage wear as shown but it's intact with no splits or tears.

Click for more detail...

12399

1950s West Germany Indian Chief Glass Christmas Ornament This 1950s West Germany silvered glass Christmas ornament is an Indian chief head, 4 inches high. He wears a feathered headdress and matching feather collar. The face is painted flat flesh-tone pink. Note the decal blue eyes - they were only used for a short time as they tended to peel and flake off easily. White mica glitter frames the chief's face and the center back headdress plume is also white mica. The ornament is in excellent condition for its 60-some year age, with only a small scratch to the face paint at the tip of the nose and some minor mica loss. The metal cap is marked West Germany. It's too large for the pike and is probably a replacement.

Click for more detail...

14384

Mercury Glass Christmas Tree Bead Garland Blown Glass Bells 8 Feet A wonderful old 1930s beaded silver mercury glass Christmas tree garland with 23 tiny blown mercury glass bells attached. It's 104" long, 8 feet 8 inches. Four or five beads have side holes or chips, otherwise they're all in good condition though there are a few inches of string (not included in measurement) where broken beads were removed. One end of the garland has a foiled cardboard star and wire stopper, the other end is just knotted. The multi-color glass bells are a little less than an inch long. Some have some finish wear, particularly the red and pink bells, but none have any chips or breaks. The bells can easily be repositioned or removed by slipping the little wire hangers from their necks.

13813

1950s Japan Porcelain Angels Christmas Ornaments Mint in Box A rare, never used boxed set of 1950s Japan porcelain angel Christmas ornaments. The eight angels are still firmly attached (actually sewn) to their cardboard insert and have never been removed. There are eight, each 2-3/4 inches high with flat backs. The blonde angels have gold trimmed wings and robes and hold candles, bells, gifts, or stars. They have open O mouths, blue eyes, and long lashes. The nicely decorated cardboard box is intact with no splits or tears. There is no manufacturer or importer name on the box, but it's likely the backs of the angels will be marked or have labels.

12674

15 Figural West German Glass Christmas Ornaments Fifteen nice figural silvered glass Christmas ornaments from mostly West Germany, produced in the 1960s and 1970s. In the second photo are a red Santa boot, a cottage, a blue car or automobile, and a gold clip-on bird with spun glass tail.

Shown in the second picture are four organics: 3-1/2 inch gold pine cone, ear of corn, and two 3 inch berry ornaments in gold and red with white mica at the tops.

Next are three figures: gold teddy bear, 4 inch begging dog, and a Santa Claus holding a pine tree.

In the last picture are a basket of fruit, a stylized bumpy organic or nut shape with three indents down the center front and back, a red spiral twist drop with Venetian Dew glitter (this ornament is actually marked Czechoslovakia on the cap), and a 2 inch mushroom with a thumbprint indent in the stem.

These ornaments are all in great condition with no damage and little if any wear. Two of the metal caps are replacements, added because they were found without caps.

Click for more detail...

14072

German Mercury Glass Angel Bubble Indent Christmas Ornament This unusual and rare 1930s or earlier German blown mercury glass indented Christmas ornament has a pale yellow blown glass bubble in the center, onto which is attached a little paper scrap angel or cherub face. The matte yellow coloring of the bubble or ball is softly reflected onto the silver back wall of the ornament. It measures 2-3/8 inches diameter and wrapped in curly bullion wire. The ornament has double pikes, one for the metal cap and one at the paneled center back used to create the inner bubble. There's a spot of mercury loss to the left of the bubble, otherwise the silvering is shiny and in good condition considering the age of the ornament. The wires have shifted some over the years, and the dark red paint along the rim outline has some wear.

Click for more detail...

13015

Germany Composition Christmas Belsnickle Santa, Sleigh, Reindeer A wonderful antique German Santa in sleigh Christmas display figure from Germany with the original box bottom. The display features a Belsnickle style Santa riding in a heavy paperboard sleigh with a composition reindeer and sack of toys. The sleigh and reindeer are mounted on a wood platform, each coated in thick flat white paint or gesso and dusted with clear or silver glitter. It's 9-1/4 inches long by about 4 inches high.

Santa has a hand painted molded composition clay face with white rabbit fur beard and holds a green paper tree. He wears a red wool felt coat and hood trimmed with black belt and white "fur" front placket. His black boots are clay or plaster composition. The composition reindeer appears to have a metal or wire frame body and metal antlers.

The toy sack is made of fine gold thread mesh with red cotton ties. Inside are six tiny toys - a carved wood boy, two wooden chickens, and a lacquered litho scrap cow on a wooden platform marked Made in Germany. The black baby has a broken foot and may be an early plastic composition. It and the metal rocking horse aren't marked.

The heavy cardboard box is marked Germany. There is no lid. The bottle brush tree is probably not original but it was found in the box. The mesh toy sack has some pulled threads. Everything else is in very good condition with only light wear consistent with age but no damage.

Hallmark 1980 Santa's Flight Christmas Ornament Mint in Box This tin litho Hallmark Christmas ornament from 1980 is mint in its original box. Santa waves from the basket gondola of a holiday blimp which says Merry Christmas 1980. The metal propeller at the back spins on its wire. The 3-1/4" wide ornament is in perfect condition with no wear at all, the delicate wire hangers are unbent and pristine. The ornament was never even taken out of its plastic holder. The scenic box liner and box are in excellent condition. There is no price or price tag.

Click for more detail...

14579

1930s USA Tin Litho Bell, Star Metal Christmas Ornaments These double sided, hollow tin litho dimensional metal Christmas ornaments were made in America in the 1930s. This type of ornament isn't listed in any of my Christmas books and I don't know who made them but I do know they're very hard to find. In all my years of collecting and selling antique Christmas, I've never come across more than a handful. Apparently the only colors the ornaments came in were red/white/green and red/white/blue.

The 3-1/4" bell and 3-1/2 inch diameter bell and patriotic star ornaments are the same on both sides. One of the neat things about these ornaments is that they have round loop grommet hangers at the tops and bottoms, so you can make double ornaments or chains with them. There is spotty age wear to the graphics and one side of the bell has a shallow center depression (not enough to consider it a dent - see last photo). There is no rust.

14438

Shiny Brite Bumpy Flower Indent Glass Christmas Ornaments Shiny Brite made these figural glass Christmas ornaments from the late 1930s to early 1940s. They're about 2-3/4 inches high and have a beaded or bumpy texture with flower indents on both sides. One is bright magenta or hot pink, the other is rare shade of mauve pink. Both ornaments have their correct scalloped and ribbed metal caps marked Shiny Brite Made In U.S.A. Other than normal darkening of the inner silvering at the tops near the caps, the ornaments are in very good vintage condition with no damage or finish loss.

Click here to enlarge image and see more about item 13693: Rose Antique Figural Christmas Bulbs on Vintage C6 Light String

Click for more detail...

13693

Rose Antique Figural Christmas Bulbs on Vintage C6 Light String Four unusual rose bud shape figural C6 light bulbs with a working light string. The bulbs are red, yellow and green painted clear glass, 2-3/4" high including the tops. They are marked around the metal bases "30V 3W Perm Contact". They look a lot like the Austrian standard base rose light bulb I have listed in the shop, but these don't have any markings indicating country of origin. All four light up fine though two put out more light.

The C-6 type light string is a mystery - it doesn't look like anything made in this country. It works but the plug is not original. The green socket receptacles are oddly shaped and appear to be some type of composition plastic material. Three C6 bulbs are included, only the pink lights up (dimly). You'll need another C6 bulb for the string, working or not. If any socket is empty, this type of string won't light. There's a Dayton's price tag on the string. The $100 hand written price was probably added by an antique dealer - the tag probably isn't original but I've left it as found. I recommend using a dimmer switch with these old bulbs to extend their life.

14161

Little Boy Boxing Champ Angel Figurine 1950s This darling 1950s little boy ceramic angel figurine is a champion boxer as evidenced by the word Champ on his chest printed in gold and the brown boxing gloves on his hands. The 3-3/4 inch high angel kid has one gloved hand raised in victory, a charming crooked smile, and one eye closed in a wink. Gold shoes peek out from his long white robe decorated with tiny gold flowers, and his wing feathers are tipped in gold as well. The original foil label is missing, but this series of boy sports angels was made by Fine A Quality of Japan. There's some faint, mild crazing to the white gown, otherwise excellent vintage condition with no damage.

Click here to enlarge image and see more about item 9872: Gilner Pixie Elf Grapes Wall Pocket

Click for more detail...

9872

Gilner Pixie Elf Grapes Wall Pocket This is a scarce wallpocket by Gilner Potteries of California, featuring one of their Happy People red pixies posed in the center of a cluster of chartreuse green grapes. The planter is about 6 inches wide by 8 inches high, the sitting pixie is 4". The back is marked Gilner Calif. and dated 1950.

There are no chips, flakes, crazing, or damage of any kind to the wall pocket - it's virtually mint. The pixie is in excellent condition as well with good paint and none of the usual soiling that often affects the unglazed bisque face. There are a couple of tiny pinpoint stray red specks to his face that occurred during the hand painting process. The fold of the pixie's hat tip has a little bit of dark green underglaze, also from manufacturing. The wall pocket is spotlessly clean inside and out, having never held soil or water. The white spots in the pictures are all from glare and reflections.

Click for more detail...

11719-2

Antique Tin Shield Swivel Head Christmas Candle Holder Clips Four rare and unusual Victorian tin Christmas tree clip-on candle holders, used for lighting the tree in the days before electric lights. They are larger than most candle clips and have a fancy embossed shield shape with scalloped leaf patterned skirts. The adjustable crown-tip candle holder heads swivel from side to side so you can adjust the candle on the tree branch.

The candle holders are a little over 2-1/2 inches high by 1-1/4" wide. They are decorated with bright lead or tin glaze paints in blue, purple, yellow-gold, and orange. They aren't marked so I'm not sure if they're American or German made but they date to the late 1800s. All four work properly and are in great condition considering their age.

Click for more detail...

10161

Antique Christmas Tinsel Garland With Glass Star Ornaments This pretty antique Christmas garland is made of gold feather tinsel roping with small blown glass puffy star feather tree ornaments spaced along its more than 8 foot length. The fine, feathery gold tinsel garland has a twisted cotton cord core. It's about 1/2 inch diameter though it was probably wider when new - the metallic fibers have flattened and curled some with age.

There are six silvered German red and yellow ribbed thin glass stars, about 1-1/2" diameter. Some have some damage - a couple with chipped pikes and two with side holes to which I've applied clear nail polish coating to strengthen and prevent further breakage. One ornament may need some neck repair to hang safely. You can easily remove them from the garland to hang on your Christmas tree if desired.

13615

Scrap Angel Glass Diorama Christmas Ornament in Tinsel Star This fancy indented diorama style blue glass Christmas ornament has a scrap paper angel or cherub in the center surrounded by a puff of pale pink cotton. The ornament is encircled by a wired tinsel star and is wrapped in crinkly gold bullion wire. It was made in Western Germany in the late 1940s to early 1950s.

The ornament is about 3-3/4 inches diameter including the star frame. There is some minor paint wear to the back from rubbing of the wires, and a little clouding of the center indent from deterioration of the inner silvering. The angel and cotton cloud slide a bit, apparently the glue holding them in place didn't hold. There are no chips or breaks.

13903

Napco Calendar Cutie December Christmas Toddler Baby Figurine In the early 1960s Napco produced a monthly series of these adorable Calendar Cuties ceramic figurines. This is the figure for December, a charming toddler girl wearing only ruffled pink panties and a red and white Santa hat. She holds up a Christmas stocking in one hand, a stack of wrapped presents in the other with more gifts at her feet.

The figurine is 5-3/8 inches high and in excellent condition with no damage or paint loss. The bottom is marked Napcoware with the stock number C-5772. There's also a silver foil label reading "National Potteries Co., Cleveland O., Made in Japan".

14216

Box Shiny Brite Stencil Scene Glass Christmas Ornaments A box of 12 classic silvered glass Shiny Brite ornaments with stenciled scenes in a nice mix of designs, all in shades of red, magenta, or hot pink. Shiny Brite made this type of ornament from the 1930s through the 1950s.

The ornaments are larger in size, 2-3/4 to 3 inches diameter. The scenes include the classic Silent Night snowy church scene, the popular planets, moon, and stars decoration, Santa in his sleigh, toys and childhood themes, Christmas greetings, and a scarce Little Bo Peep ornament from the Nursery Rhyme series. The ornament with the flower decoration is the only one without the distinctive ridged Shiny Brite metal cap.

Most have typical age spots and handling wear, some more than others, but none have any chips, breaks, or damage. The box is not original, it's an early 1940s George Franke Sons box. It has some tape marks and wear but both the lid and box bottom are intact.

14446

Antique Large Cobalt Blue German Glass Kugel Christmas Ornament This authentic cobalt blue kugel glass Christmas ornament was made in Germany in the late 1800s. It's quite large in size and heavy, over 4-3/4 inches diameter (closer to 5 inches high due to the slightly domed top) with a circumference of 15 inches. I've shown a normal size coffee mug in the last photo for scale.

Kugels are colored within the glass, not painted or finished on the outside, and the mercury silvering is on the inside. The ornament has magnificent deep cobalt coloring and excellent mirroring. There's a bull's eye circle of inner mercury degradation on one side, shown in the third photo. The glass kugel itself has no damage. There are a number of tiny bubbles in the mercury or glass, very common.

The veined five leaf type brass cap will slide a bit when pushed but is very secure. For being well over 100 years old, the kugel is in wonderful condition. The blue color is actually darker than most of the photos show.

The green needles are made of a textured crepe paper type material, but stronger - you can't easily tear them. They are not Visca or cellophane, more like paper chenille. The limbs are wire and can be rearranged and adjusted. The wooden base is painted red. Very nice condition.

14512

Antique Cotton Santa Child on Sled Christmas Candy Container This delightful old Christmas decoration was probably a candy container, or candy box as they were called in a 1919 Marshall Fields catalog. It's a cotton padded mica cardboard sled with a cotton batting Santa driver and a hooded snowsuit batting child riding behind. The child has a hand painted molded composition face peeking out from the cotton hood. Santa has a molded clay face and faded red batting suit and hat with chenille trim. His boots are black spun cotton and his beard is cotton. One side of the sled is decorated with a sprig of wired fabric holly leaves and a red berry.

It's likely that the Santa was added at a later time and is not original to the sled. I believe the Santa figure was made in Japan and the snowbaby type child and sled may have been made in Germany. I have an image of a 1919 Marshall Fields catalog that shows a German "candy box" very similar to the sled and child with no Santa.

The candy container is in remarkably good condition for its approximately 100 year age. The clear glitter coating is worn and the white batting has some typical age discoloration. A piece of brown cardboard is glued to the bottom, it looks old but is probably not original. There are no tears or major wear. The sled measures 5 inches long by 2-1/4" wide. Height is about 4-1/2 inches to the top of Santa's head.
