Send Them to Bed With a Kiss, Printed Poem

Given ‘Compliments of Chris Banzhaf, Agent, Metropolitan Life Insurance Co.’ (an agent in Marshalltown, Iowa), this little framed poem is titled Send Them to Bed with a Kiss. The poem, credited to an unknown author and likely printed in the 1930s, tells how mothers, despite being ‘weary, discouraged and worn down with the cares of the day,’ should remember that their children will grow up quickly. It’s a touching poem …

On stiff cardboard and ready to be framed (frame shown here is NOT included), we see no defects on the poem card. (4452)

Jack Sprat, Western Grocer Photo, 1934 Marshalltown Kids Party

This 8 by 10 inch black/white photo shows women in the workforce of the Western Grocer Company, Marshalltown, Iowa celebrating a ‘Kids’ Party’ on November 26, 1934. They are costumed in a wide variety of youthful togs, some wearing kiddie hats and others holding dolls and toys.

Posters showing an early version of the JACK SPRAT label character are shown at each side of the group.

The photo is signed by Smith Studio, Marshalltown, and names of all the women are listed on the back of the photo. The photo is in Very good condition with few defects from the ensuing 71 years – just a few minor corner creases that in no way interfere with the subjects of the picture! A great historic piece from Marshalltown’s history! (6418)

Early Photo: Nettie Ball, Marshalltown
This small (3 inches square) photo is identified on the back as ‘Nettie Ball’ with the photograph credited to Brown Photographers, Marshalltown, Iowa. It’s unusual in that it was printed diagonally on the cabinet-card paper. We don’t know more of her history, but it appears that the photo might have been taken in the early 1920s. (6425)

ABC Refrigeration Thermometer, Marshalltown Iowa Advertising
An early Marshalltown business, A.B.C. REFRIGERATION offered Sales and Service from offices at 9 East State Street, Marshalltown, Iowa. Phone numbers at the time this was printed were only four digits – 4608 and 2340.

The company was an authorized retailer for Frigidaire commercial refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.

This early thermometer, measuring 3 inches wide by 11 inches long, was used for many years to monitor the temperature in some of that equipment in our store. It’s seen some wear – the paint is chipped in some places on the front and rust spots are showing. The mercury in the thermometer remains inside, but has separated. Still, a nice piece of memorabilia! (6426)

50th Anniv. Key Chain/Fob: Marshalltown IA Chamber of Commerce

According to an article in the local newspaper, the Marshalltown Times-Republican, the Marshalltown Commercial Club was organized in 1898. That group was renamed the Marshalltown Chamber of Commerce in 1921 and it is apparently that date which was commemorated with this shiny gold fob/key chain.

The fob/key chain measures 1.25 inches diameter and features the words ‘over 50 years of community service’ on one side, with the Chamber’s logo on the opposite. It retains its original bright and shiny finish and in As New condition. (Scratches and scuff marks on the images are from the scanner. They do not appear on the medal.)

Plea for Help – Baby, Prohibition Postcard

Printed nearly 100 years ago, this cute baby is relaying A Plea For Help to those who read the message. The ‘plea’ concerns Prohibition -- the ‘temtation (sic) of intoxicants in any form, while growing up and reaching the threshold of a useful, happy life.’ It makes quite a statement for those who were seeking to deny alcoholic beverages.

The card’s artwork was by ‘J.O,.H.’ and was produced by A. T. Cook, Hyde Park NY, with that credit hidden in the pretty lace border. On the reverse is a stamp block calling for a ‘one cent stamp’, with space for both a message and address. It’s a neat old card!

Condition is Very Good, although corners are lightly blunted and the margins show some discoloration from age and handling. The reverse has an area of discoloration near the stamp block in top right-hand corner and where a label was removed on message side. See the scans for details and please contact us if you have questions.

1948 Early Mayer's Market Ad Calendar

This was one of the first photo calendars from Mayer's North Street Food Market in Marshalltown, Iowa. The store closed in 2003, after 65 years in business, and was the last of its kind in the city!

Advertising Groceries, Meats and Vegetables, the calendar features a different page for every month, with recipes and household hints on the back and a pocket on each to hold additional recipes, receipts, etc.

There's even a short pencil on the metal hanger at top and a listing of cooking terms and tables on the back page. It measures 8 by 11.25 inches.

Condition of the calendar is As New with no defects -- despite its age! A great find for the collector of calendar, grocery store, Marshalltown, and cute kids' items!

Cathedral of Underworld, NY Chinatown, 1930s Charity

This small folder described and solicited funding for The Cathedral of the {Old Chinese Theatre} Underworld, a 'Midnight Mission' sponsored by 'Bishop' Tom Noonan and The Rescue Society Inc. of New York City.

The folder reads: For over 40 years ... a shelter in the time of storm ... in the midst of all that is vile and degrading, its open doors welcome the tides of crushed humanity that sweep like a huge wave o'er its threshold. Will you not extend a hand in sympathy to this mass of living wreckage? By your gift you can brighten these sad lives and bring sunshine where there are shadows.

The folder is undated, but appears to be from the l930s-40s. It measures 3.25- by 6-inches folded and is in Very good condition with only light yellowing from age.

Condition: Very Good
