1948 Early Mayer's Market Ad Calendar

This was one of the first photo calendars from Mayer's North Street Food Market in Marshalltown, Iowa. The store closed in 2003, after 65 years in business, and was the last of its kind in the city!

Advertising Groceries, Meats and Vegetables, the calendar features a different page for every month, with recipes and household hints on the back and a pocket on each to hold additional recipes, receipts, etc.

There's even a short pencil on the metal hanger at top and a listing of cooking terms and tables on the back page. It measures 8 by 11.25 inches.

Condition of the calendar is As New with no defects -- despite its age! A great find for the collector of calendar, grocery store, Marshalltown, and cute kids' items!

1950 Mayer’s Market Ad Calendar

‘Out to rope business for Mayer’s North Street Market,’ the youngest clerk in the store dressed in her cowgirl outfit and sat in front of a pretty Navajo rug for this 1950 calendar. The store closed in 2003, after 65 years in business, and was the last of its kind in the city!

1948 Calendar: Armstrong Floors; Boat Furniture Co., Pella, IA This 1948 advertising wall calendar is a spectacular example of a business boosting sales of a manufacturer's products. Distributed by Boat Furniture Co., Pella, Iowa, where 'Quality Costs No More,' the 9.5- by 15-inch calendar features great color photos of 'Armstrong's Linoleum Floors for every room in the house.' Among them are a 'one-room apartment from wasted attic space;' 'guest room with a split personality;' 'bathroom with no wasted steps;' 'space-saving tricks to make a tiny kitchen efficient;' 'a livable, rentable apartment in just one room;' and 'an Early American dining room right down to the floor.'

Furnishings, color combinations and, of course, flooring choices are fully described, as are the 'pullman toilet,' folding screen, balloon-back chairs, linoleum-covered work counter, and more. Under the calendar pages you'll find 'Helpful Questions and Answers about linoleum and its place in your home' and 'Important facts about the care of linoleum and felt-base rugs and floor covering.'

The calendar is in Very Good condition with only slight corner bumps on the backing. The pages themselves are without apparent defects.

Click for more detail...

16120

1952-53 Kellogg's 'Homes of our Presidents' Calendar Distributed by the Dept. of Home Economics Services of the Kellogg Company of Battle Creek, Michigan to offer 'inspiration by reminders of those who have served our country, at peace and in war, in periods of prosperity and of depression -- the men who by virtue of office have called the White House home,' this may be one of the cereal company's few advertising pieces that doesn't show extravagantly colored drawings of cereal boxes and the many characters who have represented them.

Yes, there are descriptions and pictures of many varieties of cereals -- Pep Flakes, All Bran, Rice Krispies, Corn Soya, Shredded Wheat, 40% Bran Flakes, Sugar Pops -- but these are outshined by the drawings of homes throughout the U.S. where our presidents have lived. Those included are Herbert Hoover, Calvin Coolidge, James Madison, Harry Truman, Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Pierce, Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft. Some biographical information is included with each.

Produced as an academic year calendar (months run from September, 1952 through August, 1953, the wire-bound wall calendar measures 11 by 8.75 inches folded, opening to 11 by 17.5 inches. The majority of the pages are in Very Good condition, however the February-March pages have some handwritten markings on a few dates and apparently suffered a coffee stain on the enter of the page. Still, it's a fine example for calendar and Kellogg's cereal collections!

The Anchor, U.S. Naval Training Yearbook, Record Album, San Diego 1967
This impressive hardbound book is The Anchor – United States Naval Training Center, Recruit Training Command, San Diego CA Yearbook, (Company 67-548). Published by Jostens Military Publications, the 96-page yearbook contains color and black/white photo illustrations along with written descriptions of the San Diego Recruit Training in 1967. The book measures 9.25- by 12.25- by 1/2-inches.

Individual photos identifying each of the men who trained in this Company are shown, as are photos of training officers and instructors.

Accompanying the yearbook Is Bluejackets on Parade, a 33 1/3 rpm record album with the sounds of boot camp! The cover for the record album measures 8" X 7 ¾" and features 11 photos of the training.

The record itself is 8-inches diameter and has sound on both sides. To play the record album, the listener needed to fold the front cover underneath the back and place the entire booklet on the phonograph. It appears to have never been played – and is in Very Good condition.

The book is in Good+ condition, although it does show some light damage from storage since 1967: Covers show some soil with light wear to corners and spine ends. They also are somewhat warped at bottom – likely due to storage in a damp location. This could probably be corrected.

Inside, the front page has come loose from the binding at the top – yet it remains bound. There is some waffling at top of that same page – and again at bottom corner of other inside pages – but all are complete and readable.

Overall, the yearbook is still complete and filled with several hundred photos that can still be viewed and spark memories!
Circa: 1967
Condition: Good+

Greetings on MY 94th Birthday!

Here’s a great old birthday card – complete with a photo and message from the sender himself! The ‘birthday boy’ – James Daniels of West Chester, Iowa -- was sending ‘greetings on my 94th birthday’, May 19, 1935. He was born, the card notes, in 1841.

The card itself shows its age pretty well. There is general yellowing of the card stock paper with slight blunting of the corners. Two stray pencil marks appear on the message, but likely can be erased. We’ll leave that up to you. We’re calling this about Very Good- condition.
