Distaff Sketch Book: How American Women Dressed, 1774-1783
The Distaff Sketch Book is a collection of notes and sketches of women’s dress in America from 1774 to 1783. Written by Robert L. Klinger and published in 1974 by the Pioneer Press, Union City TN, the 61-page softcover book is a goldmine for anyone seeking information on how women dressed in the early years of our country.

The book appears to be a facsimile of a hand-written, illustrated text on the subject, including sketches of fashions and patterns along with text comments on fabrics, accessories, and children's clothes. The information is based on the author’s study of actual specimens of women’s clothing and accessories worn in the era, while the details for each sketch are based on his study of contemporary writings, drawings and paintings.

The 8.5- by 11-inch book features wonderful color drawings on the front and back covers and numerous black/white drawings inside. There is a small scuff at bottom of back cover, but otherwise we see no apparent defects – inside or out! It’s a fascinating study! (16126)

How to Make Slipcovers, Dressing Tables and Bedspreads, 1944 Helen Koues, for many years Director of the Studio of Architecture Building and Furnishing of Good Housekeeping magazine, in 1944 published this entertaining and informative softcover book: How to Make Slipcovers, Dressing Tables and Bedspreads.

In her introduction, Koues addresses the fear that dressing tables, bedspreads and slip covers are hard to make. Nonsense, she says. Such projects take skill, much like cooking or anything else that is done well. The requirements are accuracy, willingness to learn what is needed and the time to do the work carefully. So, she provides step-by-step directions for the careful cutting and accurate sewing needed to produce a tailored job. And, she discusses the importance of choosing the right color, style and fabric. The 48-page book goes on to discuss these subjects.

Wonderful black/white photos and dimensional drawings illustrate her ideas for the covers, choosing fabric, quilting/braids/fringes/cords, ruffles and more. She discusses canopy and bunk beds, combinations in bedspreads, sister prints, window coverings and more. One section deals with masculine bedrooms. Later sections talk of Details to Watch, How to Take Accurate Measurements, How to Cut and Fit Your Fabric and Ways to Make Ruffles and Use Trimmings.

The book is in Very Good condition with no apparent defects beyond some tanning of the inside pages from years of storage. Covers have no chips, tears, etc., either! If you want something special in Mid-Century Modern decoration for your home, give this a try!
