Manufacturer: Hazel Atlas Glass Company
Neat vintage souvenir glass or souvenir collectible believed to have been made in the 1940s. This is a frosted drinking glass or frosted tumbler for the state of Virginia, marked on the underside base with the raised "HA" insignia of the Hazel Atlas Glass Company. These were very popular collectibles in the mid 20th century as people travelled the country by road visiting multiple locations.
Cylindrical drinking tumbler measuring 5 inches in height, 2 11/16 inch top opening diameter. It is evenly frosted throughout the glass (vs. some of these glasses which are frosted behind the designs but become clear in other places). We've provided 3 images to try to show the intricate design. The glass shows a state map, marking in words a number of cities, locations and pertinent details of the state's history, as well as line drawings. There are 3 larger labeled graphics or illustrations of Natural Bridge, Caverns Scene and Williamsburg. All graphic details are done in a raised black enameling or baked-on paint, with a yellow background for the state and other yellow highlighting.
For those who collect items related to specific locations in Virginia, the words, locations and cities listed on the glass are: Cumberland Gap, Norton, Jefferson National Park, Barter Theatre, Abington, Bristol, Hungry Mother State Park, Bluefield, Grundy, Roanoke, George Washington National Forrest, Douthat State Park, Natural Bridge, Hot Springs, Staunton, Lexington, Luray Caverns, Harrisonburg, Shenandoah Caverns, Blue Ridge Parkway, Skyline Drive, Shenandoah National Park, Winchester, Apple Blossom Festival, Lynchburg, Fairy Stone State Park, Danville, Staunton River State Park, Appomatox, Charlottsville, Fredericksburg, Westmoreland Park, Front Royal, Skyline Caverns, Alexandria, Mount Vernon, Washington's Birthplace, Lee's Birthplace, Richmond, Williamsburg, Hopewell, Petersburg, Hampton, Newport News, Portsmouth, Norfolk, Seashore State Park, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake Bay, Cape Charles.
This souvenir tumbler appears to be in excellent condition, easily could be used. We can find nothing wrong with it...no chips, cracks, crazing. To us it looks unused but we can't guarantee that, of course. Frosting, graphics, everything looks wonderful on this vintage glass. There are a few stray scratches/marks (but nothing bad at all) and a bit of expected wear on the underside rim on which this piece sits. We got this out of an elderly person's home.
A terrific state drinking glass to add to your collection or just a nifty piece to add to any collection of memorabilia related to Virginia.
