Wedgwood Williamsburg Pocahontas Plate Jamestown VA
This lovely Wedgwood, Commemorative Plate features a very decorative scene, showing Princess Pocahontas begging for the life of Captain John Smith, who had been sentened to death by King Powhatan. The design was inspired by the 1624 edition of Smith's Map of Virginia. The border shows the ships which brought the colonists to Jamestown in 1607, and other historic scenes, including Washington firing the first cannon at the siege of Yorktown. The colors are very soft and muted in shades of flesh, blue, peach, and green, over a grey or black transfer printed design. This impressive plate measures 10 1/2" across and is in excellent condition, with no damage or fading, just some minor crazing. There is a full historic description on the back, and marked with the Wedgwood, Etruria and Barleston mark, used by Josiah Wedgwood in Staffordshire, after 1940, this lovely and very decorative piece is dated 1953 - 1955.
