Circa: 1872-1878 Condition: Good+ Manufacturer: MILLERS FALLS CO. MILLERS FALLS MASS. U.S.A.
Offering this very early antique bit brace which was made by Miller Falls in the 1870's. It has the Amidon's patent jaws for holding tapered square ended auger bits. Note the bulbous swing handle and the chef's cap style end stock, both made of beechwood. The brace is only marked "NO. 23" (although it is a rather hard to see stamped number) it was verified in the earliest catalog as a No. 23 being an 8" swing brace with Amidon's patented jaws and the bulbous swing arm handle. The Amidon's jaws are very simple two piece jaw the have a pin in them that help keep them allined while tightening the chuck. This brace functions as it should though it has had rust on it in the past as you may see the mild pitting rather evenly on all the iron, not much on the inside threaded area. The wood is surprisingly very solid, no cracked and no missing pieces! |
