This is a clean, rare, spiral ratchet screwdriver, featuring the nickel plated finish, and concealed spiral system. It is marked "NO. 442 GREENLEE ROCKFORD ILLINOIS MADE IN U.S.A. PATENT NO. 1971289" on the nickel plated sleeve. This model has a turned hardwood handle with an ebonized or black stain, in nice shape with some wear, small dings and scratches, about 80% finish intact. It measures 17.5" long overall, fully extended with no bit in the chuck, and has a spring chuck to hold the removal tips in place. The steel screwdriver chuck and shaft is in very good useable condition with very little wear, and the nickel plating is about 80% intact, with some scratches and a few small dings noted. The sleeve that slide over the top of the main shaft is very close to the same inside diameter as the main shaft it slides over while using the spiral system. This being the case, the sleeve sticks a minor amount as it reaches the last 1 inch of it's compressed travel, unless ample oil is used to lubricate it. I would say it works fine, but wanted to mention it. Greenlee improved this minimal clearence issue on the later model, and this is certainly a rare early model. The selector on this one moves smoothly and holds position very well, three position, left, right, lock. The bits are removable, and have a 5/16" or .312" diameter shank, and are the same as the Stanley Yankee brand tips with the flat and notch on the shank (remember YANKEE has three different sizes in shanks, this is the largest size). It comes with 2 different tips total, 1 slot bit, and 1 Phillips No. 3 size, both in very good condition. This is the only one of these I've seen to date with the hardwood handle in this size, considered rare! A good clean, ready to use screwdriver! Basically it's a Yankee screwdriver with some minor changes to the handle design, and will lock with the spiral shaft fully inside, (like the No. 30 Yankee for example) shortening the screwdriver to 12.5" long for ratchet or normal use. As mentioned, this is one of Greenlee's earliest models, it has no quick return spring, as per it's original desing. A rare wood handle spiral ratchet screwdriver, offered in very good working order, by a well known quality tool maker! Circa: 1930's-40's
Condition: Good
Manufacturer: Greenlee Rockford IL U.S.A.
This is a clean, rare, spiral ratchet screwdriver, comes with it's original box. It is marked "GREENLEE ROCKFORD ILLINOIS MADE IN U.S.A. NO. 448" on the nickel plated area near the selector switch. It measures 16" long overall without the screwdriver tip, has a very nice rosewood handle that has a clear lacquer finish over it. The handle is solid with less than normal wear, very nice with just a few minor ding in the hardwood, lacquer and stain looks very good, as seen in the pictures. The steel screwdriver head and spiral shaft is in very good useable condition with very little minor wear on the bare metal surfaces. This model is a non-return spring type, which means the spiral system doesn't have a quick return spring, you manual return the shaft the to position you wish it to be in. Nickel plating is 99% intact. The selector on this one moves smoothly and holds position very well, three position, left, right, lock. The bit is removable, and has a 9/32" or .280" diameter shank, and will except that size Yankee Phillips adapter bits that we also offer for sale (under Yankee with the search feature). It will also accept other Stanley or North Brothers, "Yankee" bits with the 9/32" diameter, in fact it has a Yankee Phillips head bit in it that is included. This is one of few of these I've seen to date with the rosewood handle, considered rare! A good clean, ready to use screwdriver! Basically it's a Yankee screwdriver with some minor changes to the handle design, but will lock with the spiral shaft fully inside, (like the 30A Yankee for example) shortening the screwdriver to 10.5" long for ratchet or normal use. When the spiral shaft is fully extended it is 16 inches long with no bit in the end chuck. Also included is 5 interchangeable screwdriver tips, one Phillips, and 4 different slot bits, plus I am including a 1/4" drive socket adapter, so you can also use this screwdriver as a nut or bolt driver. The box is solid, has some wear, but not torn or deformed, has a good matching label at one end of the box. A top quality made, very rare tool...with the original box too!
Condition: Very Good
Manufacturer: Greenlee Tool Co. Rockford IL U.S.A.
This is a nice, used, clean, and rare, spiral ratchet screwdriver, it is marked "GREENLEE ROCKFORD ILLINOIS MADE IN U.S.A. NO. 448" on the nickel plated area near the selector switch. It measures 17" long overall to the end of the hex head adapter with no screwdriver tip in the adapter. The hex head adapter will accept many different tipped standard hex bits that you can buy at most any local tool store. In this case the adapter is press fit, or perminently attached to this screwdriver, so only hex drive tips can be used. The hex bits have 4 tiny notches on the shank of each, the round spring inside the adapter grasps the hex bit when it is pushed into place inside the adapter to keep it from falling out. The hex bits can be a bit difficult to pull out of the adapter since they are so short, but I am usually able to pull them out of mine without the use of pliers. Better to be a little tight than falling out of the adapter. Works great, because many woodworkers now prefer square drive screws, and one can buy tips to fit this adapter for this purpose, even torx type are available. This screwdriver has a very nice rosewood handle that has a clear lacquer finish over it. The handle is solid with less than normal wear, very nice with just a few minor spot of lacquer worn off, as seen in the pictures. The steel screwdriver head and shaft is in good useable condition with some minor wear on the bare metal surfaces. Nickel plating is 95% intact. The selector on this one moves smoothly and holds position very well, three position, left, right, lock. This is only the second one of these I've seen to date with the rosewood handle, considered rare! A good clean, ready to use screwdriver! Basically it's design like a Stanley Yankee No. 30A screwdriver with some minor changes to the handle design, but will lock with the spiral shaft fully inside, (like the 30A Yankee for example) shortening the screwdriver to 11.6" long for ratchet or normal use. This model doesn't have the rapid return spring on the spiral system, again like the Stanley No. 30A. Also included is 4 interchangeable hex screwdriver tips, 3 different Phillips sizes, and one slot bit. A very rare tool! Circa: mid-1900's
