HERBERT HOOVER 1ST EDITION AMERICAN INDIVIDUALISM BOOK, MANUSCRIPT

RARE ORIGINAL CARBON COPY OF A WORKING MANUSCRIPT FOR THE BOOK 'AMERICAN INDIVIDUALISM' BY HERBERT HOOVER TOGETHER WITH A 1922 FIRST EDITION COPY OF THE BOOK. Some text differences indicate the manuscript to have been written prior to the first publication of his book on American Individualism in 1922 as can be viewed by Hoover's commenting on the war in present tense in the manuscript ('Our conduct in this war stands out as no other period in history for the universality of our service to our neighbors'--page 6 in the manuscript) and in past tense in the book ('The war itself in its last stages was a conflict of social philosophies'--page 1 in the book). Certainly the book was influenced by the manuscript as can be viewed by the similarity of the text including verbatim text in both the speech and the book such as 'Our individualism is rooted in our very nature. It is based on conviction born of experience. Equal opportunity, the demand for a fair chance, became the formula of American individualism, because that was the method of American achievement.' which can be found on the first page of the manuscript and page 65 in the book, 'the character, the courage, and the divine touch' which can be found on the last page of the manuscript and from a keynote paragraph in the book--see quote on dustjacket, and 'that opportunity for which the spirit of America stands' which can be found on the last page of the manuscript and on the last page of the book. The manuscript is 6 and 1/4 pages in length on tissue paper in blue ink and includes typed corrections throughout. On the top right corner of the first page is 'Hoover' in blue pencil.

The manuscript was prepared by prominent American journalist Mark Sullivan (1874-1952). Sullivan was a good friend and confidant to Herbert Hoover. The manuscript was kept in the files of Mark Sullivan.

Mark Sullivan was considered one of the most widely respected journalists of his day corresponding with Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, William Taft, Woodrow Wilson, Warren Harding, Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover. Sullivan was also a confidant to Theodore Roosevelt as well as a good friend and confidant to Herbert Hoover. In addition to Presidents, Sullivan corresponded with many notable politicians, businessmen and literary figures of the day including Arthur Conan Doyle who he was good friends with as well as Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Orville Wright and many other prominent and influential people from the 1890's to mid 1900's.

Sullivan wrote and published between 1926-1935 a six volume book by the title 'Our Times 1900-1925' which chronicled the social and political history of America from the 1890's to 1920's.

Sullivan correspondence can be found archived in the manuscript division of the Library of Congress and in the Herbert Hoover Institution Archives.

Sullivan would frequently assist Hoover with the preparation of speeches and addresses.

The book with blue cloth binding and gilt lettering retains the original dust jacket and is in very good condition over-all with some occasional light spotty discoloration near the inner margin on several of the pages. The dust jacket is in good condition with some ink markings on the cover.

1860'S ROCKWOOD CIVIL WAR PHOTO ANDERSON RAISING FLAG FORT SUMPTER

Photograph depicting Major Robert Anderson raising the flag at Fort Sumpter. The photograph was done of a painting by Edwin White in 1862 by the title 'Major Anderson Raising the Flag on the Morning of His Taking Possession of Fort Sumter, Dec. 27, 1860'. The photograph measuring approximately 8.25"w x 5.75"h is mounted on a thick card backing with tannish colored perimeter outlined with a line in gold-gilt. Below the line to the left is printed 'G. G. Rockwood' and to the right '839 Broadway N.Y'.

The photograph had been in an old frame of the period and framed along with the photograph was woven fabric pieces comprised of red and white thread. While it would be nice if it were a memento from the original flag there of course is no documentation that it came from the original flag at Fort Sumter.

There is toning of the mount and a water stain on the lower right side of the mount. There is a slight surface crease on the edge of the border on the right side measuring about 3/4 of an inch.
