Vintage Tintype: Young Man Needs Hairstylist

This young man doesn't look at all happy about having his photograph taken … and apparently didn't' have time to visit the barber before the sitting. He's dressed in a neat suit and tie, but doesn't have much interest in the event.

Tintype in frame measures about 2.5 by 4 inches. It's in Good condition, although both the image and frame folder could use cleaning!

Two Pretty Young Girls - 1900

Here are two cabinet cards showing young girls - one about 5 year old, the other perhaps in her late teens. The younger one has pretty long blond hair.

The photo was taken by Sours, 8th & Felix, St. Joseph Mo.

There are a couple of flaws in the photo, one on her nose, and the edges appear to have begun foxing somewhat. Still, it's a nice one.

The second photo, of the older child, has no identification as to photographer, but includes a pretty dress and some very nice jewelry on her neck.

It has no defects beyond some very minor scuffing. Two neat old photos - one price!

Neither is dated, but both appear to be from about 1900. Both measure about 4.25 inches by 6.5 inches. Adopt them for your photo family!

Cameo Glass, Cream Jugs, Chelsea Swans

Here's the June, 1954 issue of Antiques Magazine, a great source of information about high-quality antiques! The cover features the Chelsea Porcelain Swans, signed by Milton H Glover, shown below.

The magazine's articles include some wonderful black/white photos and detailed information about these topics:
Perspective Glass
Beginning of the Texas Historical Foundation;
English Makers of Cameo Glass;
Four-Square School Architecture;
Antiques in Chattanooga home of Gordon Horton;
European Cream Jugs.

Even more interesting than the articles in some of these magazines, however, are the terrific ads from antique dealers. The photos of their products are great reference tools for today's antique dealer, as well as for the collector who simply enjoys looking at items considered antiques in the mid 1900s!

Condition of this issue is Very Good, with some minor defects. The covers are loose and have been taped at the spine. They have light edge/corner wear and a few scuffs. Inside pages show no defects beyond slight yellowing and a few handwritten notes on some of the dealers' listings. We don't find any articles or ads that are clipped from the pages. It's a fascinating view of antiques from the 1950s! (1198)

Lincoln Nomination, State Aid to Railroads

This is the July, 1960 issue of the Iowa Journal of History, quarterly publication of the State Historical Society of Iowa, Iowa City. The magazine was designed by the Society to disseminate Iowa history and the articles are quite detailed with relevant names, places and dates!

The back cover of each issue lists the Federal and State officials in office (U.S. President, Senators, Representatives, Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Iowa House Speaker and Iowa Supreme Court Justices) at the time of publication and 100 years before -- in this case current President Dwight Eisenhower and centennial President James Buchanan.

This issue contains articles on: History as Human Behavior(by Samuel P. Hays); Governor Ralph P. Lowe and State Aid to Railroads (by Leonard F. Ralston); James S. Clarkson versus Benjamin Harrison, 1891-1893: A Political Saga(by Stanley P. Hirschson); Iowa Newspapers Report the 1860 Nomination of Lincoln (edited by Mildred Throne).

The cover features a view of Chicago -- the Convention City -- as it appeared when the Republicans met in their 'Wigwam' and nominated Lincoln for President in 1860.

Two special sections deal with Historical Activities in the state and Historical Publications.

This issue is in Very Good condition with no defects beyond very light edge wear on the soft covers. It's a great glimpse at some fascinating incidents in Iowa's history! (1213)

Costain - The Silver Chalice

Softcover
The best selling novel of 1952-53, The Silver Chalice is Thomas B. Costain's great and moving epic of the Cup of the Last Supper, the artist who made it and the people who protected it.

It was published in this 3rd Printing in 1954 by Perma Books as their book #2845 and has an original cover price of 50¢.

This is the story of Basil of Antioch, a young and skilled artisan who was purchased from slavery to create a decorative casing for the Cup used by Christ in the Last Supper.

Throughout the barbarically colorful capitals of the ancient world, braving the perils of Christian persecution, the sorcery of the infamous Simon the Magician, and even the ire of Roman Emperor Nero, Basil pursues his project.

He is diverted only by the charms of two beautiful women, one good and one evil.

Picture shown is cover of actual book being sold. Condition: slight creases on corners; minor bumps and scuffs. Slight spine twist. There are some soil marks on page edges. Still, it's complete and highly readable! (1223)
