Seldom seen in nice original condition as is this one these little eagle button hooks are most always in excavated relic condition as found by a digger scouring a Civil War camp site. (see: Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields & Campsites of the Civil War by Phillips) Faintly marked PATENT 1862 on the tinned sheet iron back the face the same pattern as the enlisted man's four button sack or fatigue coat. Fitted with an iron wire hook on the back these handy little gadgets were used with ponchos and shelter halves. Of interest to Civil War button enthusiasts, personal item and camp gear collectors.
