This cover was sent by, and is addressed in the hand of Lieutenant Colonel William H. Harman, 5th Virginia Infantry, of the famous "Stonewall Brigade."

Born on February 17, 1828, in Waynesboro, Va., he was a Mexican War Veteran, who served as a lieutenant, in the 1st Virginia Infantry, under Major Jubal A. Early. He practiced law in Augusta County, Va., and was the Commonwealth's Attorney, 1851-61. Before the War Between The States, he was a Brigadier General in the Virginia Militia. Commissioned as lieutenant colonel, 5th Virginia Infantry, of the famous "Stonewall Brigade" on May 7, 1861, he was promoted to colonel of the regiment on September 11, 1861. He later served as an aide to Generals' Edward Johnson, and Jubal A. Early respectively. He was killed in action, on March 2, 1865, at Gallagher's Mill, Va., near his birthplace, and is buried in Staunton, Va.
