Corning had considered the possibility of producing ornaments as early as 1933. Before the war, Corning Glass Works moved cautiously for two reasons. Corning specialized in made-to-order precision jobs such as the Mt. Palomar telescope, bulbs for electric lights, and complex engineering equipment. Max Eckardt, an importer of German ornaments since 1907 foresaw the events of Germany dictating an end to his business as it did during World War I.
