Great Expectations Antiques

Circa: early 1900's
Condition: Good++
Manufacturer: David Dominicus REMSCHEID GERMANY
This is a rare, large, hand forged timberman's draw knife with bicycle type hand grips.  The cutting edge width of the concave blade is 11.38" wide, and the width of the blade stock is 1.7".  The tool is 24.3" wide overall.  The blade is tempered tool steel and appears to have been hand filed.  The blade is marked with the name of the maker and the name of the city where the maker worked.  The logo mark is not an even stamp so it reads "DAVID .....ICUS REMSCHEID MADE IN GERMANY" on one side in the center of the blade.  Note the washer shaped shield next to the hardwood hand grip!  This keep the sharp blade edge for cutting into the work or workpiece when not in use.  The handles are very well attached and very solid normal wear, one past owner's intials, the handles have a spear shaped solid steel bar that is peened over at the end on a washer to hold the handle in place.  Quite common for maker to use this method in the early 1900's when this knife is believed to have been made.  The cutting edge is very sharp.  Appears to be around a 20" radius (roughly).  A very nice clean hand made timber knife!
