War Between the States

(1790-1856) Born in Salem, Mass., he graduated from Harvard in 1809, was admitted to the bar in 1814, but he dedicated his life to literary pursuits. He was the private secretary of John Quincy Adam, contributed to the North American Review, was poet of the Phi Beta Kappa Society at Cambridge, and was a noteworthy orator.
