Giuseppe Garibaldi: (1807-82) He was an Italian general, patriot, and republican. Perhaps the most popular of all Italian heroes, he is considered to be one of the greatest generals of all time and one of Italy's "fathers of the fatherland." Garibaldi is also known as the "Hero of the Two Worlds." In 1848, Garibaldi commanded and fought in the military campaigns that eventually led to Italian unification, and he became an international figurehead for national independence and republican ideals. He was showered with admiration and praises by many intellectuals and political figures, such as United States President Abraham Lincoln.
