Comrade Adjutant,

I recently received notice from Quartermaster that by vote of the Post my name had been suspended from the list of members of Post 191 G.A.R., and while I had been expecting this, and have not a word to say in criticism of this action of the Post, yet perhaps a word in explanation is due to the comrades as well as a slight indication of myself. About five years ago by solicitation I joined Gettysburg Post 191 G.A.R. in good faith believing in the principles innumerated and the object to be accomplished by the Grand Army of the Republic, and desiring also to aid in disseminating true patriotism to the generations following us. I had also another object in new, it was this, my income had been reduced to six hundred dollars a year, and I thought by acquaintance with comrades, I might secure a situation more profitable and thereby afford to belong to your association. In this I have been disappointed. My income will not permit any extra payments, in fact I am getting in debt more and more each year, and I am compelled by force of circumstances to yield to the mandate of fate and sever my connection with the G.A.R. Desiring and praying for the prosperity and happiness of every comrade who faced rebel bullets, and as I am not entitled to wear this badge, I most respectfully, yet regretfully, return it to the ownership of the Post.

Yours in F., C. & L,
Wm. W. Jordan
