Manufacturer: Villeroy & Boch China
Lovely vintage tall china floral vase made and marked by Villeroy & Boch in their Iris pattern. While the pattern is named "Iris" on the underside base, we've also seen this pattern referred to as "Iris Peach Black" due to the peach coloring of the flower on two sides of the vase and the dramatic black element to the design. Basically a white vase, there is also a two tone green coloring for the stem and leaves, a purplish accenting to some peach petals, and a yellow line edging. The shape of this vase is what we would call "roundish" as it isn't totally round but instead is like an "eye" shape, coming to a line edge on two sides, adding to the interesting and different look. The top edge is also curved, flaring higher in the middle and tapering lower to the two line edges on the sides. Please see the 8 images included, using the zoom function to fully examine. The camera lighting does cause some white "hot spots" in the images, reflecting off the glossy glazed finish.
Measures about 7 3/4 inches tall at the tallest point, 4 1/4 inches greatest width along the top edge, 3 1/4 inches greatest width to the underside base. Fully marked on underside base stating words in English, French and, we believe, German: "Depuis 1748, Villeroy & Boch, Ancienne Manufacture Imperiale et Royale, Luxembourg, Iris, VITRO-Porcelaine, Garanti lave-vaisselle, Spulmaschinenfest, Dishwasher safe". This piece is made of china but it is not porcelain as it is not translucent. This is not a new piece as it came out of an older home but we do not know the exact age.
Wonderful overall condition with no chips, cracks, crazing. On the outside of the vase the design looks in excellent condition, we see no major blemishes, there are a few pin/pit dots and some uneven glazing as made, it is possible it could have some minor age/use/wear/small scratches but nothing is jumping out at us here. While the inside also looks generally in great shape, we do see on the interior bottom a rough, largely rectangular spot, that looks and feels unglazed. It goes about halfway across the interior bottom, measuring about 1 1/2 inches long x about 1/2 inches wide (as best we can tell). We tried to show this in our interior vase images but it doesn't show up well when photographed. The coloring is largely the color of the white vase, just unglazed. We don't know if this is how the vase was made and is a manufacturer flaw or whether something happened in use, but since the rest of the vase doesn't really show any use wear, we are guessing that this is a manufacturer flaw. It does not detract from the vase or its usability at all, but you should know this is there as you can see it when you look inside the vase in person. The underside base on which the vase sits shows some minor age wear/spotting, nothing unexpected.
A terrific piece to use with other Villeroy & Boch Iris items or to add to a collection of Villeroy & Boch china in general. Would also make a great gift for any gardener or lover of beautiful Irises or Iris flowers.
