3. This Week's Question
Every week we post stories, comments and survey results from our readers

COME AND "LIKE" US ON Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/TIASAntiques
This weeks request was to tell us your favorite story about how you acquired one item in your collection. Half the fun of collecting is finding the items you collect and every item in every collection has a story about how it was found. So what we were looking for from you, is the most interesting story you have about one item in your collection.

The first 10 stories I get each week will receive one of these great little gadgets. See: http://youtu.be/MLofj1Ca6TM I've mailed out quite a few over the past month. When you submit your story, make sure to include you mailing address so that we can send you your gift.

Here is what we received this week...

In 1979 my husband was stationed at his first permanent duty base, McChord Air Force Base, Tacoma, WA. We were young newlyweds and far away from our home in Illinois. We lived in a small apartment in the residential area outside of the main gate and across from a couple of older homes.
One spring weekend we finished our housecleaning and noticed a small sign in front of a house across the street for an estate/yard sale. It was nearing noon and we decided to walk over and check out the sale. The gentleman there said that his uncle had died and he was cleaning out the house. His uncle had been in the merchant marine and traveled the world sending his wife items from distant lands. Being late in the day and having had the family pick before the sale, there was not much left but we came across three oriental vases. One was white with gold painting of mountains, huts and a bridge marked KUTANI and two were a matched set of dark blue and cream with irises on one side and a large bouquet of mums on the back with two character mark on the bottom and numbered 118 and 118-1. We had just moved and E-1 pay was not very very much so even at only $5 each we had to go back home and hunt for enough cash to make the purchase. It has been over 30 years and they still have a prominent place in my china cabinet and still hold surprises. Recently we realized the flowers on the matching pair were not matching but mirror images. I don't know if they are worth even the $15 we paid for them but they are treasures to me.

--Another Story--
Back in the 1950’s my mother in law was operating an antiques shop, and she acquired among many things a curved glass china cabinet which had belonged to her grandmother.
Having to make ends meet, she sold the beautiful, large golden oak, lion face, mirrored back (enough definition) piece to a customer. 25 years later that cabinet was coming up for auction. Wanting to purchase the piece for my wife, I approached the seller and his offer to me was $2500. I decided to wait for the sale. Sale day comes and an out of state buyer is there with an empty trailer just to purchase that cabinet. After heated bidding, the gavel went down at $3500, and today we still enjoy having it ‘back in the family.’………… Tim Miller, Kansas

If you have a story to share, please email it to Phil@tias.com and if we include it in an upcoming issue, we'll send you one of these http://youtu.be/MLofj1Ca6TM

7, Funny Old Stuff
This is our humor section. These are humorous family stories and comments that are sent in by readers. If you have a submission you would like to share, please send it to newsletter@tias.com and we may run it in the next issue.
Reading the last "Funny Old Stuff" reminded me of a flight I once took.
I was sitting next to a woman & her toddler on the plane, I kept putting my hand in my purse. She was eyeing me with suspicion and becoming very wary of me (this was long before 9/11 and all the security measures in place now). I looked at her and smiled and said "I have a bunny in my bag" she looked back at me with a leery bit of sarcasm and said "I have a bear in mine", suddenly my little dwarf bunny stuck it's head out of my purse and she laughed and said "oh you really do have a bunny in your bag!" We both laughed and she said she was so relieved to know that she wasn't sitting next to a crazy person for the rest of the flight! I told her I was relieved that she didn't really have a bear in her bag! We got a good laugh again.
