  • Original Windsor Yellow American Process Cheese Box, 1940s

Mayer's Market

Circa: 1940s
Condition: used
Type: Wood
Manufacturer: Pauly & Pauly Cheese Co., Manitowoc WI

This wooden box was used for distributing Five Pounds of WINDSOR Pasteurized Yellow American Cheese, a Wisconsin Product from the Pauly & Pauly Cheese Co., Manitowoc WI. An imprint of Windsor Castle still shows, though somewhat faded, on each side of the box. Ends are also embossed with the name.

The box measures 3.75 inches wide, 4 inches deep and 11.75 inches long. The wood is worn, but without any structural damage!

This box shows some extra history -- my father used it to store his sign-painting brushes when he had finished making signs for the store windows. So, as you see on the pictures here, red, blue, white, yellow, black and silver marks remain on the wood. Most of this was 1940s water-based poster paint, so it should be removable, but we will leave that task for you. We like the memories!

Long before cardboard was used to encase cheese being transported from the producer to the retailer, these all-wood cheese boxes protected processed cheese that would be sliced to order by the butcher or deli worker. The box was opened by removing the top (or bottom) and removing the large cello-wrapped block of cheese.

These boxes make great storage boxes on the kitchen counter ... or elsewhere in the house. We used them for many years to store cassette tapes near the stereo. All they need is a good cleaning and maybe a layer of varnish to protect the imprinted label information.
