Due to his father's fall and injury, 14 year old Vincent is given the job of going up the mountain alone, to stay in a cabin and scythe the hay.

He encounters a stranger in a snow storm, and later a stranger tries to find shelter during the night. He befriends a young man falsely accused of theft.

Over the next few weeks, he tries to help his friend and his family, doing what is right at great risk to himself.

He solves the mystery of the theft of the churches golden cross, finds it, and rescues the man who stole it and tried to kill him.
