Antique Tiles

Circa: 1880
This gorgeous round tile was made in the US around 1880-1890. Usually stove tiles are found in smaller sizes: this one measures a bit over 4 3/8" in diameter. Another unique feature is the thickness of this tile: 5/8". This depicts a woman's profile, facing left. She has a small flower in her hair. There's an interesting checkerboard pattern in the background. The glaze is a rich dark turquoise - also not common. Although not marked by the maker, this probably came from one of the tile factories of the time, such as Trent Tile Company or American Encaustic. There is minor edge roughness around both the inner and outer circles, and a chip off the back side. Although there is some wear to the majolica glaze, the tile still shows beautifully. (#Stove014)
