GUNSIGHT ANTIQUES

We'll let our illustrations do the talking for this desirable mid-19th century, set trigger, percussion rifle except to advise that it remains in most pleasing as used and set aside condition measuring 52 inches in overall length with a script J&K makers mark at the breach of its 36 inch barrel. (see: Sellers AMERICAN Gunsmiths / Jones & Kelsall Norwich, Connecticut) The heavy octagonal barrel measures 7/8 of an inch across the flats with a fine condition .45 caliber bore. With a pewter nose cap and brass furniture, the heavily figured rock maple remains in excellent plus condition with period finish and sports that subtle but all important raised grain feel that comes to striped maple only with decades of age and is indicative of never having been refinished. The Goulcher>style lock offers a crisp action and the percussion nipple sports an unusual thin brass cup designed to shield the barrel breach and lock from corrosion. As an aside in our research we found the makers Ellis T. Jones and William G. Kelsall listed in the 1877 U. S. Patent Office Report as assignors for a Hand-stamp for tickets design patent with Jones listed as primary in partnership with a different secondary in 2 additional (non-gun related) patent filings. Additional input into the two Connecticut Yankees was provided by City Directories where we found the versatile Ellis T. Jones in mid 1800s Norwich, Conn. listings with William G. Kelsall listed in the same period in Hartford as a machinist then Norwich as a gunmaker. An exceptional New England half-stock, all period original, in excellent shape with no condition issues, and by scarce makers. Buy with confidence!
