Great Expectations Antiques

Circa: 1920's-1940's
Condition: Good++
Manufacturer: S.J. COX FRANKLIN PA.
Offering this nice very rare adjustable screw head holding screwdriver in very good condition. It is marked "S.J. COX FRANKLIN PA. PATENTED" on the steel ferrule. This design was patented in 1925 although it is not marked on this screwdriver. The jaws to hold the screw in place are controlled by a 3 piece slide that moves in sequence with the slot bit. The mechanics of the screwdriver are all in good++ condition. The handle is dark hardwood, with a steel ferrule, very solid, but has some wear and some owner's marks on the cap end of the handle, but no cracks, fits thightly to the steel shaft. There is also some owner's notches on the main square shaft noted.  The screwdriver is 10.2" long overall, and the tip is about 1/4" wide. The screw jaws are in great shape, and can be adjusted independent of the driver blade if desired.  We set a screw in the holder in the photo to show it does actually hold the slot screw quite well.  A very rare screwdriver, a type I see very few of these days, particularly in this nice condition. A good sturdy, well made tool! Although this is a less complex version than some other patented screw holding screwdrivers, the fact remains that few example are available today. Many of these screwdriver became nearly obsolete when Philips patented his screwdriver head design.
