Rare first edition book in two volumes by the title 'Memoirs of Luis Camoens inscribed and signed by the author John Adamson on the reverse side of the title page.  On page 7 of the book it appears the author using the same pen and ink has blotted out a word that did not belong in the text (see image of page 7).  There is an owner's name in ink on the front blank page of each volume.


John Adamson (1787-1855 was an antiquary and scholar of Portuguese.


Only 500 copies of this two volume work were produced.


The bindings are in good over-all condition with some wear to the surface o the moired paper.  The leather covered spine on both bindings are in very good condition.


There is discoloration in each volume to the page with engraved frontispiece, minor toned discoloration to the title page and on the dedication page of volume 1 just a few spots of toned discoloration.  There is also some discoloration on the last four pages of volume 1 which is especially prevalent on one of the blank pages at the end.  The end of volume 2 exhibits just a few minor random spots of toned discoloration.


Would be glad to answer any questions you may have and/or provide a cost for mailing this item.  1784 Lady's Magazine for the month of October containing rare historic articles relating to hot air ballooning which had just begun in 1783.  Beginning on page 535 there is an article by the title Aerostation describing balloon experiments being carried out by Jean-Pierre Blanchard, a pioneer in balloon flight and John Sheldon.  Beginning on page 538 is an article detailing various balloon experiments carried out from the first experiment on the 21st of November, 1783 through the 25th experiment carried out on the 16th of October, 1784.  There is also an article on Jean-Pierre Blanchard's initial experiments with flying.  Blanchard is credited with conducting the first balloon flight in America in 1793.  


Also in this issue is content on Captain Cook's voyage to the Pacific Ocean.  


The magazine comprised of the October 1784 issue is comprised of 54 pages from page 507-560.


The historic magazine is in fair condition with toning and spotty discoloration as well as wear in the form of some tears and creases to the edges.  The three printed pictorial plates which are supposed to accompany this issue of the magazine are missing.

The interior is in excellent condition with the pages cream white in color and just an occasional spot of tannish toned discoloration which is highly unusual considering the age.  The back cover is detached from the leather binding.

Together with the letters is a small publication advertising books currently for sale by Gillilan.


The letters (three signed in ink and one signed in pencil) by Gillilan are typed on stationery with personal printed letterhead.  Stationery dimensions measures approximately 7"h x 6.25"w with fold creases and a paper clip stain on one letter.

The booklet comprised of 27 numbered pages is in good over-all condition with some toning and discoloration from age on the cover.

Based on the numbering of the pages the play must have been part of a series of plays published in 1744 by R. Dodsley which at some point was separated from the other plays and rebound in a later russet colored stiff paper binding.  


The pages are in excellent condition.

Marked in pencil on the lower part of the title page is the date '1744' and publisher 'R. Dodsley'.  


Based on the numbering of the pages the play must have been part of a series of plays published in 1744 by R. Dodsley which at some point was separated from the other plays and rebound in a later russet colored stiff paper binding.

The book is comprised of 43 numbered pages.  There is partial loss to the title page and preface page with some stabilization with what appears to be archival tape.  The paper is tannish toned from age.

Two books by Erica Jong including 'Fear of Flying'which is inscribed by Erica Jong in blue ink 'For Jim-Come fly with me-with all good wishes & much friendship-Erica'.  


The book with dust jacket is a book club edition.  The book binding and interior text are in fine condition.  The dust jacket is in good condition over-all with some tears, the largest of which is 1.5" in length.  The dust jacket also has some fold creases.  


The second book by Erica Jong is 'Loveroot' and is signed by her in blue ink.  Stated on the copyright page is 'First Edition'.  


The book and dust jacket are in excellent condition with just a few very small wrinkles on the dust jacket.  The price quoted is for both books.  


Would be glad to answer any questions you may have and/or provide a cost for mailing.  Rare and important first edition book by the title Cryptogamae published by Typis Universitatis of Quiti in 1893 containing information on important and rare flora and ferns of Ecuador with extensive descriptions and good illustrations of taxonomically important parts and keys to the various species.  The book was compiled and written by Jesuit priest and botanist Aloisio "Luis" Sodiro (1836-1909).    


The book is comprised of 656 numbered pages plus an index and seven lithographic plates at the end.  The binding appears to be original with marbled paper covered boards and red leather covered spine with gilt lettering.  


The binding is in fair to good condition with rubbed surface wear especially on the edges and bumped corners.  An owner's inscription and other markings in ink are on the front free page and title page. The interior text is in fine condition with the pages tannish toned from age.  There are some spots of discoloration to some of the first pages of the book.
