Katherine Nelson.

This signed and numbered #19 vase stands 5 5/8 inches tall. The glaze is a rich chocolate brown. Out of the 600+ pieces in my collection, I only own 5-6 pieces in this glaze. In my opinion, this is a vase that was not glazed with an overglaze. There is no "chocolate brown band" at the bottom of the sides. The glaze is extremely mottled, particularly in the inside.

Based on this mark I think it is closer to the 1948 date when Ballard started to use incised shape numbers as part of the bottom mark.

This vase is in excellent vintage condition.

Add it to your Stanley Ballard or American Studio Pottery collection today.  Produced by the Bryce Glass Company, this is a set of four 4 5/8 inch tall 12 oz. flat tumblers in the Amethyst color.

Not much is known about Bryce's El Rancho production. It was made around the same time as Crinkle, Driftwood, and Lido, and is often confused with them.

This set of 4 12 oz flat juice glasses is in the Amethyst color, one of the harder colors to find in this line. They are in excellent condition and ready to join your Mid-century home as you serve lemonade or iced tea on the veranda or patio (such great mid century terms).

Add it to your Bryce El Rancho or Crinkled glass collection today. Go green! Save resources and purchase a piece of America's past. Sturdy, dependable, dishwasher-friendly, it is ready for your kitchen table today.

This Noritake Art Deco bud vase stands 4 1/4 inches tall. It is a fairly common shape with a great Deco Noritake design which maximizes stands out nicely on a blue lustre background. The design of a red Spanish Galleon with billowing tan luster sails sailing on a black sea with green highlights. The base is done in a purple color with black tendrils. The top inside is tan luster. The design and the rim are outlined in bold black, a standard Noritake Deco technique.

It is signed with the "Made in Japan" mark in green putting it in the transtition period between older Nippon and the 1925-1931 red wreath mark period. It is in very good vintage condition. It is shownon page 204 in V.487 of the 2004 David Spain book titled Art Deco Noritake & More, A Photographic and Historical Record.

Here is a whimsical modern stoneware piece from the late David Gil at Bennington Potters in Vermont. started by David Gil in 1948.

They are among the few American studio potteries that turned into production potteries in the midcentury. It evolved into a co-operative of different art potters. They made their bread and butter by making gorgeous modern styled dinnerware that was distributed throughout the US by Raymore and sold in fine department stores.

This is #1460 / #1460T and was called Crown Safety Ashtray in the 1964 catalogue. It is a two part design consisting of an underbowl that can be used separately and a top cover with the safety edge. The bowl measures 5 1/4 inches wide and stands 2 1/2 inches tall to the top of the rim. The top crown sits on top of the bowl when it is used as an ashtray.

This was produced in four colors: White, Turquoise, Charcoal or Brown. This is the iconic Turquoise color. It is marked with the Cooperative Design Bennington Vermont rectangle mark which is a transitional mark used from 1960 to perhaps 1964.

David Gil, trained at Alfred University and profiled in the Winter 1961 issue of Vermont Life, started Bennington Potters in 1948 in Bennington, VT right after WWII.

Condition is excellent -- no chips, cracks, nicks, flakes, stains or other damage / problems.  Blonde Kelly synthetic adjustable replacement wig with mid-length curls and a center part for 3.5 to 5 inch circumference hard plastic and composition doll heads. " The Blue Cornflower was the first Corning Ware emblem. It was introduced with the original line of skillets and saucepans in 1957. In 1988 Corning retired the Blue Cornflower. The blue cornflower which is found on 90 plus pieces of Corning's Pyroceram ware debuted in 1957 and was retired in 1987. The P series dates from 1957-1971 when it was replaced by the A series which ended in 1987.

This P-82-B-1 1/2 Corning Blue Cornflower Menu-ette Covered Saucepan was made between 1966 and 1971. It is being sold with the P-81-C lid. It holds 1 1/2 pints. It is shown on page 27 of Coroneos' 2006 guide titled The Complete Guide to Corning Ware & Visions Cookware.

Excellent vintage condition. No damage of any kind.

Using Corning Cornflower items is an easy way to bake casseroles, gratins or use them as serving dishes. Retro pratical flair. I bought it very reasonably so can pass them on reasonably as well.

This pair of Diagonal handle #1410 Coffee Mugs has the Butterfly Gold design around the top. This dates these 9 ounce (300 ml) mugs from the 1970s. The elements of the design are highly stylized: flower, butterflies, sheaf of wheat.

This mug was made by Pyrex but it was made to coordinate with the Corelle Livingware pattern of dinnerware.

Marked on the bottom FOR OVEN AND MICROWAVE. NO STOVETOP OR BROILER

They are in excellent vintage condition. They are great for coffee, tea, hot chocolate or soup!

This pair of two Butterfly Gold cups/saucers were made by Corning and sold under the Corelle brand to be go-alongs with their tremendously popular Pyrex patterns.

The cups and saucers are in good vintage shape and ready to give you years of service. It is from the the post-1960 time period when Gil began to use the words Bennington Potters on pieces after having used a transition mark which included both the words Design Cooperative and Bennington Vermont.

This fluted 9 5/8 inch diameter plate was advertised in the 1964 catalogue as B 1650 and titled "Greek Head", an ashtray which could also be hung on the wall as a plaque as it had a built-in wire on the back. Its original 1964 price was $5.00.

It features a very stylized Head with a stylized beard done orange. The 1964 ad states the this piece was available in white or turquoise with colored accents. The glaze I believe is an early white one as it is quite speckled with two shades of white. The eyes of the head have been painted green. and an orange stain used on the beard.

This is a confirmed David Gil design. It was confirmed by Gloria Gil in May 2012.

The back of the plate/plaque has a wire hanger which was embedded in the pottery. It is signed 1651 and has the spark mark on the forearm. I would guess it is from the 1960-1962 period. It is in excellent condition.

Vermont Studio potter Stanley Ballard (1917-1960) graduated from Alfred University’s highly respected Ceramic Program in 1939, having studied there under these influential teachers: Marion Fosdick, Charles Harder, Clarence Merritt, and C. Katherine Nelson.

From 1937-1939 he was a classmate of Glidden Parker. He had his studio in Burlington Vermont from 1946 -1960 until his untimely tragic death in February 1960.

Produced by Vermont Mid-Century studio potter Stanley Ballard who worked in the Burlington area, this is an unusual shape for Ballard. It carries the shape number 24. The glaze is a green glaze which shows some of the chocolate brown underglaze at the rim. It is from his later period as there is almost no chocolate brown showing on the bottom rim of the vase. It is in excellent shape.

This Consolidated cased turquoise blue glossy finish Overlapping Shell pepper shaker was made between 1894 - 1898. This pattern is among those started while Consolidated was still in Fostoria, Ohio prior to their move to Pennsylvania. Excellent overall condition.

It stands 3 inches tall and is considered by Lechner as very scarce overall. It is even more scarce in the cased colors. In my opinion, the turquoise or dark blue is the second easiest of all the cased colors in early Consolidated.

Katherine Nelson.

From 1937-1939 he was a classmate of Glidden Parker. He had his studio in Burlington Vermont from 1946 -1960 until his untimely tragic death in February 1960.

Produced by Vermont Mid-Century studio potter Stanley Ballard who worked in the Burlington area, this 10 inch long low planter was a typical shape of the 1950s, used to start bulbs or as a base for flower arranging or ikebana arrangements. It is in his earlier light green glaze.

This piece carries the shape number 27 I think but the impression is a little bit unclear. It is in excellent condition and is from Ballard's middle production period as there is a band of chocolate brown underglaze visible at the bottom rim where it meets the bottom of the sides of the bowl.

Add it to your Ballard or American Midcentury studio art pottery collection today.  Made in the style that Fantoni often used, this charming little 4 1/4 inch diameter hanging plate is marked "Made in Italy".

It features a design of a still life of a purple and orange wine bottle and a yellow piece of fruit or perhaps a round loaf of bread.

Much ware in this style was made in the San Marino area of Italy in the 1950s-1970s for the tourist trade. It is in excellent condition.

The Noritake company produced wares for export for the American market based on popular designs of the era.

The two blossoms are stylized and painted with bold black outlines and flat areas of color for their petals. They are NOT realistic. I like the fact that both blossoms have different color centers. What is also very avant garde for the time period is how the flowers are placed in the design. They are not completely shown as well as being asymmetrically placed. On one edge there is a red and white triangle design as well. Very Art Deco.

It is signed with the blue cherry blossom mark on the bottom. It is in excellent vintage condition.

Made by the Anchor Hocking Company in the 1960s, the Lido line is yet another of the popular crinkle glassware so prevalent at the time. Like the Morgantown Crinkle line , it features highly textured surface. What distiniguishes the Lido line is that the pattern does not go all the way up to the rim of the glass. It came in colors of Aquamarine, Avocado, Crystal, Honey Gold, Laser Blue, and Spicy Brown.

Anchor Hocking produced the "Milano" pattern from 1959 to 1963. The pattern name was then changed to "Lido" because subsequently the molds were remade by the Zanesville Mold Company in Ohio, a newly acquired Anchor Hocking Corporation subsidiary. The difference between the molds resulted in the `Milano' pattern name changing to "Lido." Although the two patterns are similar, the "Milano" pattern has a distinctive and more defined "crinkle" than "Lido". "Milano" was produced in Forest Green and Crystal only. In the Lido pattern the crinkle pattern does not extend all the way to the top of the glass. There is a clear rim at the very top.

Set of 4 Midcentury retro vintage Anchor Hocking Lido Honey Gold 5 ounce juice glasses. Made for cold drinks of orange juice, ice tea, kool-aid, or lemonade, it is easy to grip and looks great. A practical retro vintage design ready for your kitchen today.

Sturdy, dependable, dishwasher-friendly, it is ready for your kitchen table today.  This Georges Scatchard 4 3/4 inch handled jug is a good example of the work that Scatchard has been doing since the 1960s. The inside of the jug is a dark blue glaze. The outside resembles his standard glaze for which he is known but if you look closely there are some subtle undertones of purple in a few places. His handle is perhaps one of his trademark designs.

This piece is signed on the bottom G. Scatchard and the year 200?. There is some damage to the bottom of the piece. I don't know if it was dropped or was a second. It does not affect how the jug sits on a flat surface.

The outside of the goblet is done in a mottled blue glaze and one can see both inclusions and the horizontal rings from the throwing. A beautiful piece.

His studio is located in Underhill, Vermont but he is currently no longer producing work as he recently sold his lamp business; he no longer has an open shop.

Georges Scatchard started from a converted horsebarn with his brother Ted in 1960. An article about the two Scatchard brothers and their ceramics was published in the 1967 Spring issue of Vermont Life on pages 38-42. According to the article, he was the only New Englander to receive a merit award for three items (all pottery) entered in the 1965-1966 New England Craft Council's exhibition for new and emerging craftsmen.

So, go green! Save resources and purchase a piece of the past. It is ready for your home today.  Annemarie Davidson (1920-2012) learned her enameling craft first from the great Doris Hall (1907-2001) in Cambridge, MA in 1957. In California she continued her studies with Curtis Tann. Her combination of geometric and organic form in her designs culminated in her most celebrated abstract designs, her Jewel line which features pieces of glass used to create free-form organic shapes which she calls Jewels. She also uses a sgraffito technique, incising straight lines from the center of her plate with the sharp point of a dart.

This 7 51/2 inch wide round low dish or bowl, most likely from 1958-1960 time, is unusual for the technique used on this piece. The center red jewels have blue lines laid over them, which is not the same technique that she used later on her more well known Jewels series.

This plate features a central grouping of three deep red jewels surrounded by three sets of three smaller yellow jewels. On her very early pieces, one sees concentric lines around the center of the piece. I have to believe these were intentional as there is a line leading all the way to the edge of the piece. This circular maze type pattern is seen on other very early piece. This would be considered a Grooveline pattern as well though the grooves are hard to see as the overglaze fills them in.

This plate is very similar to the one shown on the cover of the tri-fold brochure for the May 2 - August 15, 2004 exhibit titled The Enamels of Annemarie Davidson. The exhibit was composed of 33 examples of the artist's work and are all in the permanent collection of the Long Beach Museum of Art, 20 of these works were donated directly by Davidson to the museum.

The back of the plate is signed with her charcteristic AD interwined intiails in a very early hand-drawn version which features a later rectalinear D. As well, there is the standard later gold paper with the black line. Every piece was handcrafted by her alone, from start to finish. Excellent condition overall. There is one small spot of the front rim where the enamel has come off, but it is very small and does not detract from the piece. However with that minor damage, I am offering the piece for about what I paid for it.

The work of Annemarie Davidson was included in the seminal exhibit titled Painting with Fire which opened in Jan 2007 at the Long Beach Museum of Art. She was one of 30 enamelists included with a one page entry on her life and work. Her page is page 266 of the catalogue.
