A small two piece sad iron, measures 5 inches length by 2 ¼ inches width. The top lifts off by twisting a knob open, and the knob is wooden, as is the handle. I would think the two parts separate, so only the bottom cast iron part would be heated on a stove to prevent the wood parts from burning, and then the top part would be in place when being used.
