El tamborito is performed in formal presentations and festivals by professional folkloric groups and dancers, but it is also performed in casual, social settings. The dance is most famous for being performed at the Panamanian Carnival, which is one of the largest in the world, held annually for four days leading to Ash Wednesday in Panama City and Las Tablas. It is a participatory song and dance meaning people can join in the dancing from the crowd, clap and sing along, and shout salomas. This participatory form of the song and dance suggest African origin.
