Manufacturer: Ceramic Art Tiles
Nifty vintage pottery or ceramic tile which could be used as a trivet, plaque or hot plate. We think this type of tile is sometimes referred to as terra cotta, but we are not tile experts and don't know that for certain. This is a smaller size tile, roughly square in shape, measuring about 4 7/8 inches wide x 5 1/8 inches tall. The edges of this tile are not absolute flat/straight lines, although they are generally in a line. Versus many tiles we see, this one is much thicker, with a depth just under 1 inch at about 15/16 inch. The backside of this tile is also not smooth like often seen, having a rougher lined/ridged backside.

We don't know the age of this tile but believe it to be vintage and perhaps antique (we would guess it minimally dates from sometime in the 1900s but don't know for certain). It has a hand-painted, antique-looking design with the topside glazing dripping onto the outer edges (and there are some spots of the white glaze on the backside, too). The coloring is blue & white but in a dark turquoise type blue with the white a more muted white, not bright looking. This looks hand glazed/painted to us, but don't know that for sure. The graphic is of a sailing ship in the style of a Viking ship. There is a large sail with a cross type design in the middle, and another long ribbon type piece blowing in the wind above this sail. The base of the ship seems like a large canoe in shape with long oars protruding from the side. There is a partial fleur-de-lis graphic shape in the four corners.

There is no manufacturer or country of origin marking on this tile. We believe the backside has a rougher surface to perhaps make this better cement to a wall, we don't know. This is a heavy tile for its size, weighing over 24 ounces unpacked.

We've provided 7 images to show from several angles. Please note that the camera lighting creates white "hot spots" on the topside smooth, glazed surface (the backside is not glazed). Please use the zoom feature to examine closely.

Very nice, very usable & displayable condition, but not mint with expected age/storage/use wear. The topside has a lot of crazing lines which you can see in person, with some of these a bit light brown in look (not very dark). The topside also has many pin/pit dots in the glazing, visible as many tiny dark dots. In the top left corner there is a low chip in the corner point glazing, such that you can see the dark brown base coloring through the glazing. There is other general expected wear on the topside and along the edges. On the backside you can see that the tile is not flat (although it does lie flat firmly on a table), with wear/large chipping along some edges. When handling this tile, tiny pieces of this terra cotta sometimes flake off, so you may see some of this during shipping (we will wrap this in bubble wrap and cushion it with plastic peanuts but you could still see some terra cotta flaking on arrival). However, none of this is really bad nor unexpected and supports what we believe to be the older age of this piece, which came out of a home.

We will be listing several other vintage and/or antique tiles. If you are interested in more than one tile, please contact us prior to placing the order. The system has been set up to provide shipping costs for just one tile and will not automatically give you the cost savings you would get by shipping more than one tile in the same package. We would be pleased to provide that for you.
