Antique Tiles

Manufacturer: unknown
This is an extremely unusual piece of pottery work. The scene shows an older gentleman, in old fashioned sleeping attire, including a cap, and holding a paper in his hands. Below him, to the right, is an extended hollow area, a stump, where you would keep your matches for lighting a fire. The cross hatched area on the lower left was the place used to strike the match. There are two original holes at the top, which is where the piece would have been mounted on a wall near the fireplace or stove.

Done in unglazed buff colored clay. This is handmade and beautifully formed. Not marked. Age is unknown. This is 5 7/8" wide, 7 5/8" high and at its deepest, it is 1 7/8". The condition is outstanding. (#T-1933)
