Condition: Very Good Type: Hardbound Publisher: 1946 Author: Lydia Chatterton Pages: 448 ISBN: Not applicable
Original published to stress how a cook could ‘stretch the allotment of food’ after World War I shortages, this undated hardbound copy of Modern Cookery Illustrated was reprinted circa 1946-48 by Odhams Press Limited, London.
An English cookbook, it was written by Lydia Chatterton and features hundreds of World War I era recipes with numerous full-page and spot drawings to illustrate step-by-step food preparations. It must have been a great resource for newly-married cooks!
One note in the book suggests ‘If you are not in the habit of using a kitchen scales in following recipes, please refer to the handy Table of Measures on Page 58. This table will give you the equivalent of ounces in tablespooons, etc., for different ingredients.’
A chapter titled Principles of Cookery reveals that food prep is not a haphazard task, then goes on to offer pages of solutions to cookery difficulties – including questions and answers on subjects you’d never imagine!
True economy is the keynote of Modern Cookery and to the author, that means using every scrap of food to the very best advantage. This is a cookbook you can sit and enjoy reading! And the skills you’ll learn will make it all worthwhile – even today!
The 448-page book is in Very Good condition, with no writing, stains or tears, inside or out! Binding is secure and we see only very minor edge/corner wear to covers. A gift inscription to a previous owner is handwritten inside the front, along with intriguing stamps that the book was purchased in Madras and marked with a Bombay price! Oh, how this book has traveled!
