Lovely Nantucket Basket measureing 9 inches across inside lip and stands 5 inches tall. It is signed 'THR' on the bottom and is in as new condition.
Nantucket Lightship Baskets originated in the nineteenth century on Nantucket Island’s famous lightships. These floating lighthouses were used to warn mariners away from dangerous shoals. Captain and crew took to basketweaving to pass the time on board. Time weighed so heavily, in fact, that the style they evolved for these baskets was a marvel of intricacy.
By the beginning of the twentieth century, Nantucket baskets had become a romantic keepsake among tourists yachting near the Island. Today, both antique and contemporary versions are highly sought after by collectors.
