"Pagoda of Ninnaji Temple in Kyoto"; oban tata-e (14½" x 9½"). Signed "Asada" in Japanese with Uchida (publisher) seal underneath; "UCHIDA" watermark in lower margin near the kento notch. Ca. 1930s. Condition: good to excellent; very slight toning in visible area; some tape residue verso; full margins; deckle edges top, left, and bottom.
"Two Japanese Cranes ('Tancho')"; oban tata-e (14½" x 9½"). Signed with Gakusui seal; published by Watanabe Shozaburo. Condition: excellent; full borders with deckle edges left and top.
"Rooster"; serigraph. Signed below; unmatted and unframed (11" x 8"). Bartholomew, whose works (especially woodcuts - see Miscellaneous Woodblock Prints for examples) are just now emerging posthumously, studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and in Europe. She lived most of her life in NH, exhibiting widely and receiving numerous awards, and opened the first art gallery in Newport. Her work emphasized New Enland and religious themes and is represented in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art and Pennsylvania Academy. Well executed cameo of the thirty-fourth president of the US that captures the brave features of this admirable man. This paperweight has a grid-cut base, six and one faceting, is dated 1963. LE: 1389. Diameter: 2¾". Note: many additional sulphide paperweights are available; please inquire.
Hand-colored engraving, titled "Cape Blowmedon (sic) and Parrsboro" (4¾" x 7"). The scene depicted by this well-known artist is off Cape Blowmidon, which separates the Midas Channel from the Midas Basin in the Bay of Fundy - site of the world's highest tides. The print is in excellent condition and is tastefully double matted (O.D. = 11 x 14"). Across the bottom are the names of Bartlett and the engraver ("R. Brandard") along with the title. A wonderful crystal cube, tilted on one corner and mounted on a square, beveled edges, mirror base; three sides have dichroic coating and a concave facet. "Rural landscape in spring"; oil on canvas (15¾" x 22"). Signed LL. Listings: Ben; Dav; Ma. Michele Cascella was highly productive throughout his long life. A follower of no school, he painted "as the mood strikes me, without reasoning, relying on instinctive impulses." Only in his last years did he begin receiving widespread recognition. He had one-man exhibitions in Milan (where he lived), Ferrara and Rome.
