- NEW STORY TOPIC -For the July 7 issue -
For many collectors the story about how they found an antique or collectibles was the real thrill. Basements, Yard Sales, Thrift shops, Flea markets are just a few of the places collectors find things hidden in boxes on back shelves or inside of other items or in walls or even in the ground. Is there an interesting or unusual story behind how you found an antique or collectible?

I went to yard sales and flea markets when I was about 20ish…and bought a few things to decorate my apartment…I also early on collected anything “rabbits”, since my cousin had a real rabbit and I was not allowed, so, around 20ish,I started the collection…my mom passed in 2001, followed by my dad in 2002. My sister and I cleaned their apartment and I took most things home. They were quite poor and had no real antiques, but most of what they had I took…at the time my dad passed, there was a fire in a large apartment complex in their city and we gave most items, such as sofa, chairs, tv, and oven to the fire victims. What I really started doing when we lost them both, was go to yard sales and flea markets and I tried to “buy” them back…anything that reminded me of my mom or childhood, I bought. It was too much and I learned that I could not buy them back, they were in God’s hands and what I did have left was memories..So, I collect those now…There is not a day that passes that my mom does not come into my mind and heart. Eight and seven years later I miss them both as much as ever, but can now think clearly enough to enjoy all the times we had together. They were great parents. One thing I found in my mom’s house was a spoon I sent for from a cereal company when I was around nine and do I ever cherish it..to think my mom kept that spoon all those years. When I was in junior high school, taking home ec classes all the girls had to sew aprons. My mom also kept mine and I found it in her linen closet when we cleaned out her apartment. But, it is the memories I collect and cherish the most. Love the newsletter and all the stories. Thanks, Pam.

--Another Story--

My parents were in the antique business back in the sixties when I was in high school and almost every Saturday night they would go to an auction and Sunday morning would consist of going through the box lots and sort and clean things up. One time I took a liking to a Hall china teapot and my mom said it's yours and when you go to the flea markets pick up every piece of Hall you can find. Didn't have much to spent then but I did find some gems and thanks to my mom , my husband , my friends, and all the flea markets, shows, mega malls and EBAY I have over 1200 Hall teapots...when the dealers saw me coming they would say, here comes the HALLTPOTLADY ! maggie in the Armenia mts. of Pa. Happy Hall Hunting

--Another Story--

After moving to Georgia and renting for a few years we thought it was time to buy a house. As money was tight we ended up buying a small fixer upper on one lot and a big garage for my husband to work from on the other. The price was right and we bought it. The house had to be almost thoroughly gutted. The kitchen didn't even have hanging cabinets just old fashioned metal ones. Well, we started to put in the new ceilings and walls in the living room that's when the fun began. One day my son and I were sitting on the wood floor resting from the work we were doing. All of a sudden we could hear footsteps going across the room. We just looked at each other with wide eyes. What in the world was that? It was daylight I thought ghosts come out only at night! After that all heck broke loose. My car keys kept disappearing and after we searched the whole house they would be back right where I left them. Pots on the stove would move off the burners and the burners turned off. God awful rackets at night in the living room and when my husband would get up with his billy-club to see who was invading our home no one was there. Things started to disappear and reappear in the garage too. I would be on the computer and sense someone watching me. Then about a month later I saw the previous owner and told him my story. He had a little smile on his face and said, "that's my dad". Oh great! Well at least I knew we weren't going mad and who it was. His first was Culpepper and his son said he had been doing his tricks for sometime. We finally got used to him and sometimes I would talk to him about not letting me see him like his son did one day. Our ghost friend stayed with us for a few years until one day after I went up north to visit my sick mother. As my husband and I came home, opened the front door our son came running from his room. "I'm not sleeping here alone again" were the first words out of his mouth. He said that the night before we returned our ghost made a racket and was trying to open the bedroom door. Our son stayed up all night with that trusty billy club in his hands (although I don't know what he expected to do with it against a ghost). Then...........NOTHING...... No keys disappearing, no pots moving, no noise, no one looking over my shoulder. Peace and quite. A few weeks went by and I saw his son again. He said that he and his wife were talking about us recently. Happens that his mother died and they were saying that we will might have 2 ghosts. Till this day the ghost is gone. He made that racket on the night of his wife's death. I am certain that the reason he was in our home was that we was looking for her and they left this earth that night, happily, together!

I restore and sell Carousel and rocking horses for a living. My customers sometimes come to pick up their work at my home and studio. I also have live horses that I ride and play with.
One weekend I did have one of my live horses listed for sale in the newspapers, and had several people scheduled to come over and see her. Also scheduled was a couple coming to pick up their now restored Carousel horse.
Well, the first couple came, and happened to have similar names, or so I thought..They wanted to see the horse and maybe ride her, (not an unusual request)..I started to walk them around my house...to see their horse, and started to go inside....they kind of looked surprised...and asked "You keep your horses in there". well I responded,
" Just some of them, the others are out in the workshop".
The expression on their faces, was a bit confused then astonished as I whisked them into the house. They both started to laugh uncontrollably.....they were here in answer to the ad to sell my live horse! Marsha Schloesser - Carousel Workshop -Deland,Florida,

In the last issue Lori requested a recipe for "a Greek recipe (so says the owner) for a meat sauce (NO beans) that he puts on the hot dogs, burgers, etc" here are the responses that we received.

1/2 # grn beef
1/4 C chopped onions
1 garlic clove minced
1 (8 oz) can tomato sauce
1/4 c water
1/2 c chili pwd.---may need more

Cook beef, onion and garlic in skillet. Drain off fat. Add remaining ingredients and simmer for 10 minutes. Serve over hot dogs.

All of the Cinnabon cinnamon roll recipes looked wonderful, but I'm wondering if anyone has a yummy cinnamon roll recipe that does not use yeast. I'm allergic to yeast, and cannot eat bread, rolls, donuts, and many other items (even Smokehouse Almonds have yeast in the flavoring). Can anyone help? Kind Regards,Linda Sloan
