"Tiffin's #203 etch is quite scarce and no actual examples are pictured in any of the Tiffin books or the websites of the leading Replacement Services(only catalog reprints are shown), however, Florence's Glassware ID Guide does show an actual saucer champagne with this etch. This lovely antique pitcher stands 9 3/8 inches tall This pitcher has lightly purpled through the years "Beginning in the 1860's, glass makers in the United States started using manganese to give glass clarity instead of lead due to lead shortages created by the Civil War. Glass containing manganese eventually turns a light purple when exposed to sunlight, a side effect that was unknown at the time that this practice started. It's shape #15179 and stands 7 1/2 inches high to the top of the lid finial. (The base is 5 1/2 inches high) The glass is green with an all over satin finish. The white ceramic finish is done in the French Crystal style (high polish figures against an opaque background) but instead of each nude being highlighted as is usually done, every other figure is done in the ceramic wash. This treatment was a custom order done in the first month of production. Even more special, these bowl came from the estate of a Consolidated Glass company worker who brought them home in January of 1928 so we can date them directly to the beginning of production.
